Panasonic has been the dominant brand in the super-zoom compact camera family, but it has now been shared by other rivals such as Canon and Fujifilm are constantly launching products in the same field to compete. Not wanting to lose this lucrative market, Panasonic recently expanded its existing TZ line with a new range of ZR-branded products.
In addition to the 8x zoom lens, the ZR also offers an image stabilization system that makes shooting at night easier. The overall picture quality that it delivers is also impressive.
The ZR1 looks quite similar to the Lumix DMC-TZ7, except for its much smaller size. Handle with a metallic line that fits well with the design but still feels solid, though it’s not really optimal for one-handed grips compared to the rubber bands on the TZ4 and TZ5. Right above the wheel is the adjustment mode. But due to the outmost location right next to the shutter button so sometimes causing the operation of the user machine is difficult.
The layout of the buttons behind functions is similar to most other Panamosic Lumix cameras. The switch between the playback mode and the shooting mode at the top, just below the zoom button, 4-way navigation system, menu, next to the 2.7-inch wide screen. Overall, the design of the ZR1 is quite solid, however, it does not really stand out from Panasonic’s predecessors and rivals.
The 12.1 Megapixel ZR1 features a Leica DC Vario-Elmar lens consisting of four flat lenses with a thickness of only about 0.3 mm and six convex lenses. The ZR1 features a 25mm wide-angle lens ideal for landscape shots. The optical zoom of the machine is only 8x average compared to 12x of TZ7.
The ZR1 is Panasonic’s latest Power O.I.Sa. Optical Image Stabilizer technology, which doubles its image stabilization capability so it is well suited to difficult shooting conditions and sudden moments. In tests, the picture is still very sharp with a shutter speed of 1/4 of a second, which is really impressive for a shot of a shot.
Like most Lumix machines on the market today, ZR1 can record video with AVCHD compression. Intelligent automatic mode integrates with scene analysis in front of the lens and adjusts the exposure accordingly. Face Recognition function of ZR1 allows to recognize up to 6 faces in the same frame. When the camera recognizes the person’s face in the photo, it will also autofocus on it. However, the face detection when people move, in low light is not really perfect.

The performance of the ZR1 is average in the Compact camera line. Machine start time is over 1 second, shutter lag is about 0.15 seconds. Time for the ZR1 to capture the first image is about 1.4 seconds, which is considered quite fast compared to most other compact compact cameras. Continuous shooting mode of the machine is limited, the machine only take 3 consecutive shots, then you need to wait for a while to continue shooting.
A new shooting mode on the ZR1 is the Dynamic Range for high-contrast images, but test shows that the images are not really that different from the IA shots.
The image quality of the ZR1 will probably surprise many users. The camera still captures pretty good quality details at ISO 800. And of course the ISO 100 and 200 image quality is really worth the praise.
Unfortunately, the aberration phenomenon (ZR1) occurs in the edges of images when shooting objects in backlit conditions. However, this difference is hardly noticeable unless you print a photo at a larger size or zoom in to view it on a computer screen.
The camera’s automatic WB is quite accurate when shooting outdoors. This is not shown if taken under fluorescent lighting but the problem will be resolved if you adjust the white balance setting manually.
While not as “perfect” as the TZ’s, the ZR1 is really a compact camera worth owning with a compact, easy-to-use design, especially effective anti-shake technology, image quality is good.
