The Acer ED270R Sbiipx is a 27-inch VA gaming monitor with a modest feature set and a reasonably low price point. The market for cheap gaming monitors is very confusing. This is not due to the complex technology they carry but to the sheer abundance of options available.

You can find a lot of monitors with 27-inch, 1080p screens for between $150 and $300. Acer’s ED270R Sbiipx is one such example, but its 1500R curve and image quality are far superior. The ED270R is great for gamers with its 165Hz refresh rate and AMD FreeSync support. You won’t need an expensive PC with brilliant graphics hardware to enjoy 60 frames per second (fps) or more.

Design

The minimalist design is unsurprising in any budget monitor, and the Acer ED270R Sbiipx puts as little emphasis on looks as possible. The screen has thin bezels on three sides and a chin at the bottom. This chin provides room for the silver Acer logo, while the back is still a matte black plastic part with fewer ridges and another Acer logo. It lacks the RGBs that is never lacking on gaming monitors, but at this price avoidance of light is no offense and the ED270R Sbiipx manages that.

The small stand has a rectangular base clip on the back of the monitor. Tilt is the only adjustment offered, and the stand’s default height may be too low for users about 6 feet or taller. The lack of tuning is disappointing but standard at this price point. At least one 75x75mm VESA mount is available, so a third-party monitor stand like the HUANUO Single Monitor Mount can solve the monitor’s ergonomic problems for tall users. You can simply place the included stand on a platform.

Port selection is basic, but that’s what we’d expect at this price point. The monitor has one DisplayPort and two HDMI ports, as well as a headphone jack. Messaging with built-in presets makes things brighter enough for most environments; however, we see some flickering.

The ED270R Sbiipx’s black levels are higher than most of the low-cost VA panels we’ve seen, but not by some recent IPS panels. We’ve reviewed high-end IPS monitors like the Asus ROG Swift PG279QM that deliver a much more dynamic range, but you’ll have to pay the price for that significant improvement. The ED270R delivers a good value/performance ratio.

Its 4000:1 contrast ratio is respectable for a cheap monitor. While not amazing, this is much better than what you’ll find in the most capable budget trackers on the market and avoids a lackluster, bleak look. However, the lack of depth is quite noticeable in movies and games, making this content less appealing. However, the Samsung CF390 series is a better option for entertainment, but it has its problems in the game.

Color accuracy is quite good with an average color error of 1.82. this beats most monitors in the sub-$200 category, except for those targeted at advertisers and professional artists. However, the screen’s picture out of the box feels a bit warm and musty, but with a few calibration tweaks, it gets better.

This is a 27-inch, 1080p monitor with a 1500R curve and a 16:9 aspect ratio. That’s standard for a monitor in this category but a bit low for monitors in general. Even so, the screen looks pretty sharp and offers good text quality. Having a 1440p screen would be better, but you should have no problem using it to write in Word or edit spreadsheets.

Overall, the Acer ED270R Sbiipx delivers good picture quality for its price point. The display’s good brightness, good color gamut, and excellent color accuracy produce true-to-life and lifelike images. It lacks the bells and whistles of more expensive monitors but is enjoyable enough for everyday use.

Gaming Performance

The Acer ED270R Sbiipx is as solid as a gaming monitor, so it has several features that will excite gamers. First, it’s compatible with AMD FreeSync and has an impressive 165Hz refresh rate. At 27 inches, the FHD resolution is stretched to its limits, and although small objects and types are still reasonably clear, you’ll see the screen door effect at typical viewing distances.

Granted we’ve spoiled the recent QHD and UHD screen cuts, but it’s safe to say 1080p’s days are numbered. While the Acer ED270R is still a solid value option, it’ll be hard to downgrade to 1080p if you’ve already got a taste of what the higher resolution has to offer.

With a 5ms response time, games are a good experience on this monitor, thanks to frame rates that are consistently above 83 fps and FreeSync. While 165Hz is better than 144Hz, it will require a powerful graphics driver to achieve high frame rates at 1080p and high settings on most modern AAA titles. The image quality in the game is also appreciated thanks to the accurate color of the ED270R Sbiipx.

Overall, the Acer ED270R Sbiipx delivers good performance for the price. It won’t match high-end gaming monitors like the Alienware XW3CK or the LG 27GN800-B, but it costs less than many other 27-inch monitors and it offers a vivid 1500R curve.
