With just one simple button, the rear stand will protrude from the screen. And you just need to fold down the wireless keyboard to start using it like a full-sized Surface Pro.

Basically, ASUS created an all-in-one gaming PC in the form of a laptop. The Taiwanese manufacturer has redefined the term “desktop replacement” devices.

ROG Mothership is one of the first gaming laptops to feature an RTX 20-series GPU. Optional configuration also comes with NVIDIA’s most powerful model, the RTX 2080 Max-Q. As a result, in addition to the powerful graphics processing capabilities, ROG Mothership also supports advanced “ray tracking” real-time lighting simulation technology.

Ray tracking is a light construction technology using ray tracing in a digital environment exclusively on the RTX 20-series. Through absorption, reflection, and scattering tracking, Ray tracking will create more natural lighting and shadows like in Hollywood movies. Although not widely available, ray tracking has been present in a few hit titles recently released such as Shadow of the Tom Raider and Battlefield V.

At the same time, NVIDIA’s Max-Q technology is the foundation that enables ASUS to integrate incredible power into a gaming laptop as thin as the ROG Mothership.

ROG Mothership is like an all-in-one PC with the motherboard and all the components right behind the screen. ASUS “battleship” is designed with aluminum frame, weighing about 4.8kg gives a sense of solidity like “a tank”.

ASUS representatives shared that they have researched many different designs during the development of next-gen laptops. According to ASUS, keeping the laptop vertically is the perfect way to stay cool, while if left on a horizontal surface, heat dissipation is less efficient.

Going back to the ROG Mothership, of course you can still use it as usual with a permanently connected keyboard and monitor, but when disassembled, things get a lot more fun.

Basically, using the ROG Mothership right now looks like a real 17-inch PC. The wireless keyboard feels great with good key travel and no lag thanks to the 2.4 GHz wireless connection.

In addition, you can also fold the top half of the keyboard to adjust the tilt for comfort and save space on the desk. Whenever you want, you can also leave this integrated keyboard part, and replace it with a dedicated gaming mechanical keyboard.

As you’d expect, ASUS has headed for a complete gaming experience with the ROG Mothership’s 17.3-inch display. It defaults to rendering in 1080p with a 144Hz refresh rate, short response time (3ms), and support for NVIDIA’s G-SYNC technology.

Inside, ROG Mothership is powered by an Intel Core i9-8950HK’s top-end 18-core CPU, which can be overclocked up to 4.78GHz. You can also upgrade the maximum RAM capacity to 64 GB and install up to three 512 GB NVMe SSDs.

And if you’re looking to save energy while working, ASUS also comes with a Switchable-Graphic quick switch to integrated graphics mode. This will require a reboot, but it will give you a few more hours of battery life.

The ROG Mothership will be much more expensive than conventional gaming laptops. It is almost like a limited production device.

Making each ROG Mothership takes a lot of time because some components have to be assembled by hand. Accompanying a high price, this breakthrough laptop model is difficult to reach many audiences. However, this is a good sign for the laptop industry. While it’s all about reducing the size and weight of gaming laptops, ASUS wants to change our mindset about how we should use gaming laptops.
