Over the years, mobile games have become an indispensable part of the entertainment needs of most young people. It is easy to play and takes less time and money than “training” games on laptops and PCs. That’s why we always bring out games to compare which machine is playing better games.

But in fact, we bring out the Mi 11, S21 Ultra, iPhone 12 Pro Max to compare which machine plays better games. Oh, why is that? They are really strong but not born to serve gamers. If you want to play the game, ROG Phone 5 makes you buy without thinking. It is too full and fits what we need on a Gaming Phone.

Gaming Phone needs more than a terrible configuration.

Do you think just Snapdragon 888, 16GB RAM, 120Hz screen, 6000mAh battery is enough to become a Gaming Phone? Is not! Gaming Phone needs more than that. We have seen a lot of devices with great configurations, but gaming is still incomplete. The Sahara-like heat on Mi 11 is the sudden decrease in brightness on the iPhone. The chip is modern, but it’s still not well optimized for software, reducing fps and increasing constant temperature while playing. Such a terrible configuration, but the gaming experience is not complete.

The above situation is acceptable for someone who needs to play entertainment games for 1-2 hours a day. However, you spend 6-8 hours a day playing games for good gamers. It would help if you considered changing the device because the continuous play will be extremely harmful when the temperature is constantly pushed up. The tablet will be damaged battery when working at full capacity.

Gaming Phone needs the right software and equipment for gamers.

Most of today’s high-end devices lack the software and supporting features of a Gaming Phone. All of that is available on ROG Phone 5. From the first day of holding the device, all the apps I downloaded were games. From heavy games to light games, I tried all the ASUS features.

ROG Phone 5 has Game Genie, which will take your gaming experience to the next level. We have a separate application in the middle of the screen menu to customize all machines to best suit the game. ROG Phone 5 has four modes: X Mode, Dynamic, Ultra Durable, and Advanced. Each mode will suit a unique play style. For example, when I want to plow Genshin Impact max setting, I always turn on X Mode to maximize Performance and Touch Response. Then the durability of the PIN will decrease a bit. That is also the suggested ROG Phone 5 mode that will bring the best performance to the game. In contrast, when playing lighter games like Arena of valor Mobile, I can turn on Super Durable mode to save the most PIN, reducing performance because the game is not too configuration-intensive.

The two modes above are opposite, and I see the difference when playing the same game. I chose a light game and required fast combat handling, Call Of Duty Mobile. Both times I played, I started from 100% battery capacity. After 1 hour of playing, X Mode consumes more battery. Super durable is 5%, and the temperature is also about 3 degrees Celsius higher. ROG Phone 5 has the above features not to show off, to make the scene where it helps the user.

This Game Genie section is also very easy to open in parallel with the game by swiping from the left edge when entering the game. The list of settings options is also more complete and useful than the simple game support tool of Xiaomi or OPPO, etc. It has many features such as call blocking, notification blocking, sensors. What I find most valuable is the Brightness Lock feature, which completely overcomes the iPhone’s brightness reduction when playing for a long time. Along with that is the Air Trigger – something completely different from a regular phone.

The process of setting up Air Trigger is also quite easy; select and move to any end on the screen. After that, the playing process also made me quite happy when the screen is freed up the display area; it will be extremely useful for games that require many fingers. I play PUBG Mobile with five fingers, so I feel the benefits of Air Trigger very clearly. Controls are as flexible as hacking! These two Air Trigger keys work by touch, but the vibration it gives is so real that I thought it was a physical key.

ROG Phone 5 is one of the very few smartphones with an AMOLED screen, 1 billion colors, and a refresh rate of up to 144Hz. And in fact, I can’t distinguish the difference between them during use. That does not mean that the 144Hz screen is redundant because Game Genie has suggested a lot of games that support 144fps, and I tried Sonic Boom. The results are extremely impressive, and it is consistently stable at 140-144fps. That is a rarity when playing games on the phone. At this rate, in the next 1-2 years, the phone scanning frequency will still be up to 360Hz like a PC screen!

Configuration, software mixed with ROG UI have satisfied me with the experience of ROG Phone 5. The experience of opening applications, swiping, and touching on ROG Phone 5 is truly unbeatable in the Android world, even surpassing it through iOS! It is also smooth, without any lag like current Android models when exiting the horizontal application. The vibration sensor of ROG Phone 5 also reminds me of the joy of feedback on OnePlus. I’m just afraid that I’ll become addicted to this quick touch feeling after using it for too long.

Accompanying ROG Phone 5 is also the included AeroActive Cooler 5 cooling accessory. However, I did not have the opportunity to use it, but it can be reduced to 15 degrees Celsius during heavy gaming, according to the company. That is an impressive number, and I hope to experience it in the future.

As for the gaming results, I’ll take a quick look at the results because the results are sure to be very good compared to the rest of the smartphone world. Popular light games like Wild Rift, Arena of valor, Call of Duty are not said, 60fps is easy, and the temperature is only 40-44 degrees Celsius in 1 hour of play. Genshin Impact has the best FPS chart I’ve ever seen; it’s stable at 55-60fps with Middle graphics. That is something very few smartphones have done in the past few years. The CPU temperature is also very high, up to 57 degrees Celsius, so I still hope to experience the cooling fan to see the cooling effect that ASUS equips.

A few points to improve

The point that I find most annoying with ROG Phone 5 is probably the volume. The machine weighs up to 238 g without accessories, and if I wear a fan, I can’t imagine how long I will be able to hold it. That is understandable given the 6000mAh battery it has to bear, but I still hope ASUS will reduce the overall mass in the next generations. ASUS gaming laptops are lighter and thinner, so why can’t ROG Phone do it?

The next point is that the design of the camera cluster is quite sharp, which makes me quite uncomfortable when playing. Every time you move your finger, you constantly hit that sharp edge. In addition, there are still many games in the game section that have not yet optimized the frame. For example, Mortal Kombat still appears with two thick black borders on both sides. Hopefully, ASUS will fix it in the next generation; that’s enough for me.

Summary

ROG Phone 5 goes beyond what we expect from a Gaming Phone. The high configuration part is not said, but its software features are too good, close to what we need in a phone for game enthusiasts.
