In every new generation of technology, there’s technology at the forefront — the fastest processors, the most powerful GPUs, and, in the case of the $80 Asus ROG Swift PG35VQ, the most feature-rich gaming monitor you’ll ever get. Found on store shelves or purchased online in 2020. This 35-inch monitor with a 200Hz refresh rate is the most “super” the ultrawide segment has to offer, and with a punchy color count to ensure speedy performance, it is also a good choice for content creators as well for gamers. 4K video editors with big budgets to spend may want to consider options like the Apple Pro Display XDR for increased screen real estate, but for anyone else who wants a good ultrawide gaming monitor best on the planet.

Haven’t we seen it before?

Those looking at Asus’ spec sheet based on the VA, 3,440 x 1,440 pixels may feel as though it’s something they’ve seen, and for the most part, they won’t mistake it for another. Our favorite monitor, the Acer Predator X35. It is an open secret in the display industry that many major players buy panels from other manufacturers and repackage them instead of developing the technology themselves.

Since the panel itself doesn’t differ between the two screens, the main features that can distinguish them are on the outside, literally. Finish quality, case, stand — these are all the touches that Asus engineers put in to create their PG35VQ, as well as calibration, color adjustment, RGB, and more.

The monitor sits on one of the coolest stands I’ve seen in the past few years, one that sits at an angle and has unevenly aligned stand sections. In the case of other stands that might qualify as triangles, the closest comparison I could make in the Asus case is a spiral, with each arm protruding in a different direction in a design that works especially well for angled keyboard users like me.

The monitor is moderately ergonomic, with a tilt range of -6 to 21 degrees, and swivels 35 degrees to the sides. Those hoping to use it as a second monitor will be disappointed by the lack of rotation to portrait mode, but that’s understandable when you consider the monitor’s weight: 10 kg without stand and 20 kg withstand. Make sure before you invest $80 into your next monitor that you’ve got a sturdy desk that won’t wobble under the heavyweight of ROG Swift. Those planning to use a VESA-compatible stand with this monitor will need to make sure their stand is compatible.

One cool feature I’ve found on Asus that I haven’t seen before (in the Acer X35 or elsewhere) is the ESS 9118 DAC (digital-to-analog) audio amplifier built into the display. If you stream your audio in from your GPU or console via HDMI or DisplayPort, you can plug headphones into the back of your device for an enhanced audio experience. You can also choose to use two built-in 4-watt speakers, although I recommend always using headphones or an external sound system if you can manage it. There’s no reason to ruin a top-notch visual experience with an audio sub.

As for ports, the PG35VQ is equipped with one HDMI 2.0 port and one DisplayPort 1.4b slot, two USB 3.0 upstream ports, and a single USB Type-B downstream port for connecting the monitor to your PC.

Color: Impressive and a little mysterious

To evaluate the color accuracy of the ROG Swift PG35VQ, I tested the sRGB gamut using Portrait Displays’ CalMAN calibration software. The Klein K10-A colorimeter and the X-Rite Pro 3 Plus spectrophotometer.

Almost any gaming monitor performs well on this test, which measures the visibility of web-based content (average is typically between 95 and 100 percent), and Asus with a score is 97.3 percent.

In the Adobe RGB measurement, which usually tells you how the display will perform when handling content creation tasks like editing photos or videos or creating 3D models, the PG35VQ proved more impressive with a score of 93, 4%, one of the highest we’ve ever seen from a gaming monitor.

Then there’s the DCI-P3 test, which measures how accurately a monitor can display movie and TV content in creative editing applications. Here, the screen is oddly boosted, reaching only 71.4%, the lowest we’ve tested. That is especially odd considering Asus’ 90% rating on its website.

At a peak reading of 1,027.8 nits in HDR mode and 464.8 nits in SDR, the PG35VQ’s brightness levels fell compared to the expectations set by its HDR 1000 specification. However, things started to take a turn when we measured black levels and found consistent results of just 0.0019.

Divided by peak HDR brightness, this monitor exceeds its contrast ratio rating of 500,000:1 and achieves a record of 540,947:1. I had a hard time believing this because So to complete the test, I managed to keep a 10% pure white window in the center of the screen and measure the black levels on the left and right edges of the panel. Even in this case, local array dimming is like a Tempur-Pedic mattress to ensure that no elements visible on one side of the screen affect the display’s color accuracy in another area.

Next, while it wasn’t always part of our testing regime for a gaming monitor, I decided to see how the monitor is optimal on all fronts and ran it via ColorChecker, a test designed to assess screen accuracy for professional advertisers.

That is tested in Rec.709 BT.2020, the latest HDR spec available. Here, the monitor scored a very respectable 0.91 dE (short for “deltaE”; anything below 2.0 is great). As I’ll discuss in anecdotal testing, this resulted in some movies and TV shows coming to life in HDR. But what about that disappointing DCI-P3 score?

If I had to make an educated guess, I would blame the local dimming system that could have damaged our devices. It’s an advanced technology for monitors that can shake up the normal process more precisely, leading to weird things like our DCI-P3 results under the high-grade testing process control degree.

In the end, using the HDFury 4K Diva, I recorded a low input lag figure of 2.2ms, which isn’t the fastest we’ve seen, but only 1/5 of a millisecond slower compared to Predator X35. This speed difference will only be felt by the most elite CS: GO and DOTA players in the world, and even then, it’s unlikely it will make a difference big enough in the long run.

Experiment with anecdotes

As was the case with the Acer Predator X35, gaming on the PG35VQ proved to be excellent. Everything a gamer could want is fully displayed here.

With 512 local dimming zones powering FALD lighting and black levels almost on par with OLED TVs, it’s clear that Asus is going to be a new kind of monitor — one that I’m particular about can keep an eye on the top.

Whether it’s gaming, watching movies (my favorite activity for any movie that uses the CinemaScope aspect ratio), or just getting some daily work done, do it on ROG Swift. Feels far beyond anything I’ve ever experienced (save for my time with the Acer X35).

Games in HDR are equally great, whether I’m playing shooters, MOBAs, RTSs, or otherwise. In our pitch-black test space, the ultrawide format envelops you in a world of vibrant, immersive colors, and although I could use more adjectives to describe it, it is something you have to experience for yourself.

With the PG35VQ, I could seamlessly transition from a fast-paced shooter like Overwatch to a beautifully crafted, deep game like Red Dead Redemption without even feeling the transition. Everything goes with beautiful colors at high speed with no compromises in between. Perfection in gaming.

The Best Ultra Ultrawide

Both in terms of price and usage experience, the Asus ROG Swift PG35VQ is the current ultimate boss ultra-wide gaming monitor. But since there is little practical difference in the panel technology that powers the Swift and the Acer Predator X35, Asus has gone to great lengths to differentiate its model, and I think it’s done a good job.

Small touches like the built-in headphone DAC are a nice addition, and I quite like the spiral-themed design Asus has used with the kickstand, but it’s the tweak it shows off, again, no flattery. It has true color.

The price of PG35VQ is currently $700 higher than the Predator X35, and in my eyes, the real difference is made in the black levels. While the Predator is certainly capable of outputting stunning images, the Asus is much better than that, only to be felt in the way you get when playing games or watching movies in HDR.
