This Asus monitor uses a Twisted-Nematic (TN) panel, which means it has no trouble delivering good grayscale and viewing angle performance, but not as good as you get on an IPS panel.

For good gaming performance, it adds several connectivity options including Displayport 1.2 and HDMI 1.4 as well as dual-link DVI-D for extended monitor setups. Its Full HD (1,920 x 1,080) provides very sharp high-resolution images, but its colors aren’t as accurate as those of the latest 4k gaming monitors or even the Editors’ Choice for big screen gaming monitor, BenQ PD2700U.

Nvidia G-Sync Technology

Nvidia G-Sync is a type of adaptive sync technology used on gaming PC monitors and gaming laptop monitors. This feature is the answer to AMD’s FreeSync technology, with both technologies using each monitor’s refresh rate to eliminate screen tearing at high refresh rates that occurs when monitors Fixed refresh rate graphics try to keep up with the graphics card. Screen tearing manifests as a split-screen effect with the screen showing parts of two frames at once.

G-Sync corrects unwanted artifacts by matching the display’s refresh rate to the Nvidia graphics card’s rendering rate. As a result, you can see images instantly as they are displayed regardless of screen size while simultaneously combating input lag. With G-Sync technology, there are also options for variable overload, easily predicting when the next frame will be sent, and screen overfitting to eliminate ghosting.

Design

The Asus VG278Q lacks the masculinity of the MSI Optix MPG341CQR and BenQ ZOWIE XL2740 models, it lacks the sleek look you’ll find on curved gaming monitors, but like the Asus VG278QF gaming monitor, it’s still a beautiful monitor. It has a black, 2.5-inch cabinet with fairly slim (0.4-inch) bezels and a matte, anti-glare coating. The bezels here aren’t the thinnest, but Asus has done a good job of keeping everything thin. You can easily prop it on the dual monitor stand and work on two monitors side by side with ease.

On the back, there are four VESA-compatible holes and a wedge-shaped stand and a sliding hinged mounting arm that provides up to 4.7-inch height adjustment, 37-degree tilt adjustment, and 90-degree pivot degrees, that allows you to use the screen in Portrait mode.

Again, the mounting arm can rotate 120 degrees at the base and is surrounded by a ring of LEDs that glow red when you enable the Light In Motion feature via the on-screen menu system.

Ports And Settings

On the Asus VG278Q, all ports are located at the back of the cabinet, the same location as its other sibling, the Asus VP28UQG. Here you find one HDMI, one DisplayPort, DVI enough for older systems. The monitor has a pair of embedded 2-watt speakers, but they’re underpowered and produce a thin sound. They can’t replace real PC speakers, especially if you’re using the monitor for media consumption.

The settings of the Asus VG278Q can be adjusted via the four function buttons on the right side, where you’ll find a Power button and a 5-way dial that makes it easy to navigate the settings menus. The monitor’s Game Visual settings are in fact optimized visual presets and include Landscape, Racing, Cinema, RTS/RPG (Real-time Strategy/Role-playing modes), FPS (First Person Shooter) and sRGB.

Additionally, there are Brightness and Contrast settings, along with five Blue Light Filter settings including Off to reduce eye strain, three Skin Tone settings (Red, Natural, and Yellowish) and four set Color Temperature (Cool, Normal, Warm, and User). You also have an ECO mode that dims the panel’s brightness to reduce energy consumption.

In addition to the Game Visual settings, the VG278Q features Asus’ GamePlus technology, which easily provides four different cross-targeting overlays and an in-game timer to track things like reappearance and playtime game.

In our Asus VG278Q 27 review, it was important to highlight how the display performs on modern titles. Surprisingly, it’s a stellar performer, scoring well for PC gaming in the Crysis tests, thanks to its 144Hz refresh rate and 1 millisecond (gray-to-gray) pixel response time. The screen manages to provide very smooth motion handling with no noticeable ghosting or blurring, although you don’t get the detail you get on more expensive monitors, like the MSI series of gaming consoles Optix. It offers the same clarity as Grand Theft Auto V on the Sony PlayStation 4. Colors are rich and detail is outstanding.

Despite its rich colors, the VG278Q’s color accuracy was a bit poor in color tests, with reds and greens falling short of their ideal targets and blues quite on the edge. Fortunately, the result is a screen that doesn’t look washed out or oversaturated. The TN panel has no trouble displaying any grayscale, loss of brightness or color shifting when viewed from extreme angles, but IPS panel types benefit from wide viewing angles.

Even with an impressive test score, it still benefits from Nvidia’s G-Sync technology that boosts frame rates well. With Sync disabled, screen tearing wasn’t an issue on Crysis 3 and Call of Duty: Black OP, but fast action scenes looked much smoother and sharper with G-Sync enabled.

The Asus VG278Q G Sync monitor has an input lag of 27.4 milliseconds, which is fine and probably won’t affect your gameplay. However, it doesn’t match the short 9.7 millisecond latency of the BenQ ZOWIE XL2540. The display consumed 36 watts of power in the test when set to sRGB mode. That’s in line with most competitors in the 38-watt range, but with ECO mode enabled it can drop to around 29 watts.
