Design

At first glance, you will mistake Asus Zenfone Selfie as Asus ZenFone 2 because looks are no different from the “brother” sold in early 2015.

The machine still owns the style of design square edges with rounded corners and rounded curved back to the sides. With this design, you will feel the edge of the machine is quite thin and quite secure by the back of the palm rest.

Continuing to inherit the unique design of Zenfone 2, Selfie’s volume control buttons are also located at the back of the machine and the power button on the top.

Test Lab found that with the size of 5.5 inches, placing the power button in this position is unreasonable because users with small hands will be difficult with the index finger to press the power if using the machine with a hand. However, pressing the volume, especially shooting with these two buttons is comfortable and convenient.

The Asus ZenFone Selfie version, tested by Test Labs, is light green, but it is easy to stain. Therefore, if you buy this color version, you need to paste the decoration to limit this. The front of the machine is impressive thanks to the large selfie camera cluster that is symmetrically arranged with the rim of the concentric circle that Asus calls “Zen style”. This design makes the machine looks quite luxurious and beautiful. In addition, the sides of the screen on both sides of the machine is relatively thin so you will not have the feeling that the machine is too “fat” as the product line is the same size but with a thick screen borders.

Screen

Probably the second most impressive test with Zenfone Selfie’s Test Lab. It has a 5.5-inch screen, supporting Full HD resolution (1080 x 1920 pixels) with a pixel density of about 403 ppi. The actual display quality of the machine is really sharp, honest and maximum brightness is also quite high. Test Lab recognizes that the machine is used in all conditions with the option of automatic brightness (Auto Brightness) comfort, without any obstacles.

Three Android-specific function buttons are located on the bottom of the touch screen so the workspace on the screen is quite extensive. In addition, the machine is equipped with screen color mode (the color adjustment for the screen) inside the operating system to help users customize parameters related to color temperature (Color temperature), the processing Color calibration for the purpose of reading, watching movies, surfing the web or reading …

Camera

True to the name of “Selfie” function photography was Asus focus quite a lot, especially the ability to take “self portrait”. It features a 13 megapixel main camera with (dual tone) LED flash, supports up to 4,128×3,096 pixel resolution and Full HD video recording at 30 fps. The camera on the front of the Zenfone Selfie also has a 13 megapixel level and it also features a dual LED flash similar to the HTC Desire Eye that Test Lab has previously rated.

Compared to Zenfone 2, the quality of actual shots from ZenFone Selfie cameras is better than color saturation as well as sharpness. The Test Lab recognizes the photo in automatic mode in bright enough conditions for beautiful, high-resolution detail with a resolution of 13 megapixels at 4: 3 (default camera setting at 10 megapixel aspect ratio of 16: 9. Although the size of the images taken from the main camera ranged from 1.2 MB to 2 MB when shooting at 13 megapixel resolution.

Test Lab appreciates the HDR wide-field shooting function on Zenfone Selfie. Actual snapshot with this function gives the image a nice, clear shadow, while the highlight is not as glaring as the other Zenfone versions. Besides, the color of the image is also not blurred with the gray color dominate as in Zenfone 5/6 before.

Like Zenfone 2, Selfie’s built-in camera also supports a variety of shooting modes including Super Resolution, Low light, Night, Depth of Field (also known as negative image), Panorama … In addition, the manual function is also integrated to help users understand the technique can adjust the parameters such as ISO, focus, aperture … to match the actual conditions to create the best picture.

Especially with selfie photography, the default camera application will allow users to beautiful portraits with Beautification mode. This mode will automatically make your portrait look more beautiful and natural thanks to the smoothing function – skin lightening, facial cleansing, facial tones, makeup … Photo taken with default settings though pretty nice but Somewhat “virtual” (big eyes, skin is much finer than reality). Therefore, you should adjust it to be the most natural. Photos taken with this secondary camera also have a high resolution (4,096×3,072 pixels) with a capacity of about 1.7 MB to 2.3MB (considering the average size of a photo file is higher Both photos taken from the main camera).

The point worth mentioning here is that the 13 megapixel front camera has a wide angle, so the actual shots will capture the wider scene. Moreover, the camera also supports the selfie group shooting function so it is very convenient for you to take self-portrait shots. The shooting function with the volume button on the back also convenient for you to “self-portrait”.

Like the HTC Desire Eye, Test Lab found that the dual cameras on the front of the Zenfone Selfie had a high brightness, which was somewhat uncomfortable when shooting night shots at close range. But the actual snapshot with this bright light function is quite obvious with the relatively natural skin tone. Although the LEDs are quite powerful, they do not suffer from “red eyes” like previous compacts.

Operating system and features

Basically, the interface and features of this product is not much different than Zenfone 2, Zenfone 4/5/6 has upgraded to Android 5.0 Lollipop or ZenPad tablet series. The test point of the labs mentioned here is that the new ZenUI supports the automatic integration of the same applications and functions into the same folder, such as Photography,, Productivity, Business, Music & Audio. The use becomes quite airy and “clean”.

An interesting feature of Zenfone Selfie is that it’s convenient to double-tap the screen, instead of pressing the power button as before. Users can quickly customize the home screen by swiping from the bottom up to change the wallpaper, add or remove widgets, change icon packs, change page transition effects, lock applications….

Performance

Unlike Zenfone 2, Selfie does not use Intel chips but rather Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 615, found on medium-range Android smartphones. The RAM of the machine up to 3GB, higher than the majority of Android smartphones with the current segment. High capacity memory, 32GB, supports up to 128 GB expandable memory card.

Asus Zenfone Selfie can handle the normal demand with high speed, the machine almost does not happen to jerk or delay. In terms of gaming capabilities, the machine can handle relatively heavy graphics games, and the speed with which the game starts is pretty fast thanks to the 8-core 64-bit processor and 3GB of RAM. In general, Test Lab does not have any complaints about the performance of Zenfone Selfie compared to the same price range.

Performance testing results with benchmark tools show that Zenfone Selfie scores quite a high score. Specifically, with the Vellamo Metal processor performance measurement, the score is 979, slightly higher than the Samsung Galaxy A5 and Alcatel OneTouch Flash Plus. Graphics performance scores with the 3DMark tool show that Selfie outperformed both the Galaxy A5 and One Touch Flash Plus with 6,937 points. Overall performance with PCMark, though slightly higher than OneTouch Flash Plus, but far ahead of the Galaxy A5.
