Design and feel

On the exterior design, the S100 is generally not much improvement over the S95. The front has a little indentation machines so users can cupped fingers, hold the camera certainly more help. Canon has moved two microphone which is located in the left and right sides near the bottom lens of the S95 machine upwards and placed immediately below the shutter button. Perhaps this move is aimed at reducing the noise of the zoom lens motor during filming. S95 does not zoom (optical zoom) during recording, the S100 does.

Canon also rearranged a bit position of the control buttons on the back. Ring Function button is moved from the top of the camera on the back and put in the position that was previously Shortcut button (S-shaped button, used for quick access to a function or a user that you set for it). You can still set the Ring Function button’s purpose, so that instead of adjusting the ISO, you can perform focus lock or lock the exposure, for example. When opening the machine in playback mode, press the Ring Function button will allow you to remove the photo (with the symbol next to the trash).

You also see the emergence of a new movie recording button on the back, allowing quick access to a feature film – a big difference compared to the S95. Due to movie button is located in the old location of the playback button (Playback) so this button is moved to the bottom, the former seat of the Display button, also be included in the Display button 4-way key clusters where nodes are left timer and accessed by going to the Function menu.

LCD screen 3-inch size large enough for your S100 can see the image clearly. With 461,000 dot resolution, the screen displays bright and beautiful colors both indoors and outdoors. But look on the camera image of beauty and light strokes on the computer than watching.

On the surface also some minor changes, the Ring Function button is moved as mentioned above, the GPS letters printed in the old location of the On / Off button while the button comes close to the shutter button. Wheels select shooting modes (Mode dial) has added a second icon nested circle, for quick access to creative shooting mode (Creative mode).

Despite a 5x optical zoom lens, 3.8x larger than the S95, the S100 chassis but still thinner than 3mm predecessor. Rather flat lens surface protrusions such as S95, look better.

Handset is quite compact in the hand, really very useful and compact when left in a bag or pocket when traveling. However, even if the machine has been improved to make more impressive, but you should still be careful when holding the camera to avoid falling, because the machine is still quite slippery and sticky sweat, fingerprints.

Function

There is a larger focal range predecessor, the S100 for wide-angle shooting capabilities, and further, the sharpness in the corners better photos. Apertures from f max / 2.0 – f / 5.9 at telephoto, and minimum aperture of f / 8.

While the S90 and S95 predecessor model uses a 10.4-megapixel CCD sensor, Canon S100 is equipped with a 13.3-megapixel CMOS sensor, allowing 1080p video camcorder, while the elder model only shoot 720p video. DIGIC 4 processor also be replaced with a new DIGIC 5 processor, allows reduce noise and chromatic aberration correction better, and help speed up autofocus.

Ability to shoot 1080p Full HD is a notable improvement Canon S100, with optical zoom while recording. Even machines can slowly refocus when the distance to the object is changed.

However, users should note that, when you want to select movie mode, you just press the button with the red dot filming camera on the back, while the Movie mode button (photo cameras) above the wheel correction mode (mode dial) will give you access to movie mode at speeds Super slow Motion super slow, with optional speed of 120 frames / second at 640 x 480 resolution or speed 240 frames / sec at 320 x 240 resolution, the maximum period is 30 seconds. Recorded video clip to be played during 4 minutes with slow motion home.

In contrast to the slow motion, you can “speed up” time with Minature recording mode, in which you shoot images will display zippy speeds 5x, 10x, or 20x. You can access this mode by two circular buttons Creative Interlacing Mode dial on the rear (SCN button), then select the “Func. Set” to access the menu and find the icon with a picture car / building slightly blurred by high speed (main miniature effect), then you press the movie button to perform clip.

Note, two interesting movie mode on the Canon S100 are not supported while recording audio, so your video will not sound. In addition, the image quality is not high, slightly blurred image, especially when you choose to spin at high speed.

In normal shooting mode, each clip will have a maximum length of 29 minutes 59 seconds, with the level of quality @ 24 fps 1080p, 720p @ 30 fps and 640×480.

There is a slight change in the S100’s zoom mechanism. If you zoom by pushing the spin button surrounds the shutter button when the shutdown it will be restored to its original state, and when you turn it on, the lens has a 24mm focal position. However, if you use the scroll wheel on the original tune to perform zoom lens, assuming you zoom to 35mm, after the shutdown, this zoom level has been saved and the machine started up again when you turn on the machine. So if you want to turn on your computer in “Safe” is 24mm, you should rotate the zoom on this level before the shutdown. Of course, you can take advantage of this feature to set the preferred zoom level, to be able to quickly capture even when you turn the machine without worrying zoom.

S100 support from 80-6400 ISO range with better quality a bit S95. Notably, in ISO Auto mode, you can adjust in the range of 400-1600 ISO, if you want a higher ISO, you have to put in manual mode.

Autofocus speed of the machine slightly slower than the S95.

S100 also allows you to capture images in bracket mode, by setting this mode and you press the shutter button, the camera will take 3 photos at once with three different exposure levels to choose from.

GPS. A feature that has contributed to the high price of the S100, which is the GPS feature, allows you to record the geographic coordinates of the photo you take. To enable this feature, go to Menu and select install, navigate to GPS and select On. If you want to save the travel distance when taking photos, select GPS Logger On.

However, the photos you take with the GPS feature will only have meaning when they display the geographic coordinates of where you shot them on a map Google Map. You need to have the Map Utility software Canon to perform “connect” your photos with Google Map. Sorry, S100 digital camera that we evaluate not accompanied by a CD containing the software, so we have not tested this feature.

However, you are very much aware that this feature is a huge energy drain. Even if you shut down your computer, the battery is still being consumed continuously in service of GPS navigation. We have a fully charged battery, take a few shots with GPS On mode and then shut down, only after about 10 hours as the battery ran out. Therefore, if you enable this feature, you must always have a spare battery, or even to turn off GPS or remove the battery before going to bed (or when not using the machine again), otherwise the machine overnight will end and your battery is not charging enough time for the next journey.

More on batteries. Canon S100 uses a new battery, type 3.7V, 1120mAh lithium-ion NB-5L, which according to the CIPA can take 200 pictures on a single charge the battery, with the battery capacity on the S95 and S90 less than (220 photos). The fact our experiment also equivalent battery life, with approximately 170 images and 7 video clips with length 10 minutes / clip.

Menus: PowerShot S100’s menu system Canon standards, divided into a main menu has three settings tab and the Function menu, the system is shown with common symbols and have enclosed a brief indication should be very use. It also supports the display grid to help users watch frame alignment.

Performance

Canon S100 is capable of quite good sensitivity, which is why two shots at ISO 3200 and ISO 6400 level above overexposed to the glare, so you can choose two ISO level if the surroundings very bad.
