amazon Deebot Ozmo T8 AIVI reviews
Ecovacs Deebot Ozmo T8 AIVI is an expensive 2-in-1 vacuuming and mopping robot with great battery life, obstacle detection and avoidance, and unique home monitoring.
Tired of your pocket-friendly robot vacuum getting stuck on things like cords, pet toys, and shoes? Maybe it’s time to upgrade. The $799.99 Deebot Ozmo T8 AIVI can both vacuum and mop your floors and boasts artificial intelligence and image interpretation (AIVI) technology that automatically identifies and avoids obstacles. It also features a neat Visual Butler that lets you watch live video of your home from anywhere, and it works with Amazon Alexa and the Google Assistant, so you can start and stop cleaning with your voice. It’s pricey, but it’s one of the most feature-rich mixed floor cleaning robots we’ve tested.
Design and Setup
Ozmo T8 AIVI has a beautiful design with a matte black finish. Measuring about 13.5 inches in diameter and 3.6 inches tall, it’s one of the larger floor mopping robots I’ve tested but still short enough to fit under most furniture.
It boasts some sensors for mapping and navigation, including the aforementioned AIVI image detection sensor at the front, anti-collision sensors on the sides, a TrueMapping Distance sensor above, and a sensor carpet detection plus six anti-drop sensors at the bottom. AIVI technology uses an artificial intelligence chipset and a camera to recognize things that can get in the robot’s way, like wires and socks, and build a database of objects to avoid, so it works well more over time.
To get started, remove the Ozmo’s protective film, install the side brushes, plug the docking station into the wall, manually place the robot on the dock, and turn on the power. Ecovacs recommends placing the dock 1.64 feet away from objects on either side and 4.94 feet away from anything.
In the box, you get an extra set of side brushes and an extra filter. You don’t have a remote, but you can control the Ozmo through the Ecovacs Home app (available for Android and iOS), Amazon Alexa, or Google Assistant. Setting it up to work with the app is simple. You can either scan the QR Code on the robot or select your model manually from the list, then follow the on-screen instructions to connect the robot to Wi-Fi.
Setting up the Ozmo T8 AIVI to work with Alexa and the Google Assistant is also quick and easy. For the former, you need to activate the Ecovacs Deebot skill in the Alexa app, log into your Ecovacs account, and select the robot you want to control with your voice. Once I connected them, I said, “Alexa, ask Deebot to return to its charging dock,” and the robot followed the command and went right there. Then I said, “Alexa, ask Deebot to start cleaning,” and it worked again. It also works well with Google Assistant, allowing me to start and stop cleaning with just my voice.
App Features
From the Ecovacs Home app, you can start, pause and stop cleaning jobs and schedule cleaning.
When active, the robot will create a map of your home in the app, showing the exact cleaning path for each job. You can also view the square footage it covers, the time it spends cleaning, and the remaining battery life. The app keeps a log of its cleaning history, so you can see exactly when it last vacuumed and mopped, where it covered, and how many obstacles it avoided.
An Advanced Mode in the app lets you set virtual boundaries for the robot to avoid selecting specific areas and rooms you want to clean. If your home has multiple floors, you can also turn on the Multi-Story Map feature to generate a map of each floor.
Finally, a very cool Video Butler feature enables remote, on-demand home monitoring, just like a portable home security camera. You can use the arrows in the app to move the robot around your home as you watch a live video stream from the robot’s camera. You can also use this feature to ask the robot to play the voice messages you record. Admittedly I spent way too much time using Video Manager to keep an eye on my dog Bradley, but it can also come in handy if you want to check if you’ve left the door open or plugged in. iron or not.
Performance
I’m pretty good at keeping the house tidy, but my dog sometimes leaves his toys strewn on the floor. Before running a traditional robotic vacuum, I always pick them up, but he makes sure to take them out and leave them on the floor to vacuum up stuck dust.
To put the Ozmo T8 AIVI’s obstacle detection technology to the test, I purposefully placed a dog toy that had tripped over other robot vacuums in its path. Without fail, the Ozmo T8 AIVI detects the toy on its way and changes direction accordingly. It got stuck once on the base of my chair, but I released it, and it doesn’t happen again.
Once the robot is done and returns to the charging station, you will receive an in-app notification with a map showing the locations of its identified obstacles. The application recommends clearing these obstacles to improve cleaning efficiency.
Overall, the robot works quickly and does a good job of cleaning hard floors, carpets. It cleans in a smart, systematic way, creating straight lines. I noticed that the robot automatically adjusts its suction to suit different types of floors. For example, if it switches from hard floor to carpet, it automatically increases suction power.
When running on carpet, it can get a bit loud, with a maximum volume of about 67dBA. If you’re in the same room chatting or trying to watch TV, it can be not very pleasant.
In testing, the battery lasted up to 170 minutes on a single charge in auto-clean mode, a bit short of Ecovacs’ estimate of 200 minutes. That’s the best battery life of any mop or vacuum cleaner we’ve tested, making it a great choice for large homes.
In 130 minutes, it can do two rounds of my roughly 1,000-square-foot home on auto-clean and still have some battery left. After those first two cleaning jobs, the 14-ounce trash can was almost filled with dust and dog hair.

Wipe
The Ozmo T8 AIVI is also a mopping robot, and I’m happy to put that feature to the test. To start mopping, you need first to remove and fill the water tank, snap the mop over it, and then slide it back into the robot. A washable/reusable microfiber cleaning cloth is pre-installed on the mop, and the robot also comes with a pack of 5 disposable cloths.
If you’ve never used a robot like this before, the process can be a bit confusing at first, especially since Ecovacs’ user manual is mostly image-based, but it’s pretty easy once you understand it well. In the manual, Ecovacs says that you should use purified or softened water in the tank to prolong its life. The company doesn’t specifically warn about filling the tank with a cleaning solution, but it also doesn’t say it’s OK.
Although it only uses water, Ecovacs claims the robot’s simultaneous vacuuming plus mopping allows it to remove up to 99.26% of bacteria from your floors. However, in the age of COVID-19, it cleans with only water could be a deal-breaker for some. Given its high price, I wish it provided support for cleaning solutions.
I tile in my kitchen and parquet in my living and dining rooms, and the Ozmo T8 AIVI has no problem getting through the transition strip to move from one-floor type to another, an area that has tripped up vacuum cleaners and other robotic mops. When mopping, the robot leaves a very light film of water on the floor and dries quickly.
The user manual notes that the robot automatically detects the carpet and stays away from it while mopping. Ecovacs recommends removing the cleaning cloth and running in vacuum-only mode if you need to vacuum carpets first.
In testing, the Ozmo T8 AIVI did a good job of avoiding the carpet when mopping. I do wall-to-wall carpeting in my bedroom and can leave the bedroom door open while mopping without incident. When it reaches the carpet, it turns in the other direction.
During a cleaning job, the robot got stuck between my bathroom vanity and toilet. When this happens, it says: “Help me” and sends an in-app message that says, “Deebot is stuck. Let’s order it for free. “You have to manually move it to an open area and start the cleaning process again.
When the cleaning is complete, the robot will command you to remove the cleaning cloth and send you an in-app notification reminding you to do so.
After first passing the Ozmo T8 AIVI in mopping mode, many but not all stains on my floors were gone. It still had a lot of battery left, so I ran it a second time. After the second pour, my floors were almost spotless, and they felt noticeably cleaner, although some tougher, longer-lasting stains remained. The trash can is about a quarter full, and the microfiber towel is completely dirty.
Ecovacs makes an oscillating mop attachment for the Deebot Ozmo T8 AIVI called the Ozmo Pro (sold separately for $99.99) that vibrates up to 480 times per minute to better tackle fixed stains. The Ozmo Pro has a larger, 8-ounce bucket of water, enough to cover 2,000 square feet when mopping.
To use, you remove the pre-installed mopping system, pour purified water into the Ozmo Pro, attach the disposable wipes to the bottom, and insert it into the robot. Once you install it, Deebot will automatically go into scrubbing mode.
Ozmo Pro performed well; You can see the mop attachment quickly moves back and forth to scrub the floor as the robot moves. After one surf on my very stained floor with the water level set to medium (default option), the Ozmo Pro removed a lot of dirt from its mop, but I could still see some stains, so I ran again. After two full uses, the mop is full of dirt, and my floors look so much better.
With Ozmo Pro installed, the robot will still simultaneously vacuum and mop and automatically avoid carpets. The Ozmo Pro system uses an upgraded (rather than height-based) ultrasonic sensor to detect carpets and keep them from getting wet. It supports four different water flow levels (low, medium, high and extreme) and supports virtual boundaries and no-wipe zones.
You can’t use the Deebot Ozmo T8 AIVI washable/reusable microfiber wipes with the Ozmo Pro, but you do get 26 disposable wipes in the box. When you run out, you can get a 25 pack for $25.
Maintenance
Ecovacs recommends washing and drying the reusable microfiber wipes that come with the robot after each use and getting a new cloth after 50 washes. You should clean the robot’s filter once a week, the side brushes every two weeks, and change both every three to six months. The main brush should be cleaned once a week and replaced every 6 to 12 months.
Ecovacs creates an Auto Empty Station for the Deebot Ozmo T8 AIVI that can empty the trash without your help, a feature you can also find on the iRobot Roomba i7+ and Roomba s9+. Unfortunately, the Auto Empty Station doesn’t come with the Deebot Ozmo T8 AIVI — you have to pay an extra $249.99 for it. That’s pretty high since you can buy an affordable vacuum cleaner for the same price, but it cuts down on maintenance.
The Auto Drum Station is much larger than a standard base station, measuring approximately 7.4 x 8.5 x 16.3 inches (LWH). It comes with a pre-installed disposable dust bag and an extra pouch in the box. Ecovacs says the disposable dust bag holds about 30 days of dirt and debris, but that will depend on how often you use the vacuum. You will receive a notification in the Ecovacs Home app when the bag is full. Ecovacs sells packs of three dust bags for $20.
When the robot docks after the cleaning job, the Auto Empty Station will start. It gets pretty loud for about 30 seconds – about the same volume as an old-fashioned vacuum cleaner – as it sucks all the debris from the robot’s bin into the dust bag. During testing, the Auto Empty Station finished emptying the robot’s trash without my assistance.
Setting up the Auto Empty Station requires a few steps, but it’s fairly easy, and the instruction manual in the box will guide you through the process. You need first to remove the original trash can that came with the robot, use the included main tool to remove the two outlet covers, and install the new trash can with the Auto Empty Station. From there, you remove the protective films on the station, connect the dust container to the base, and secure the base socket with the three included screws. You can then unplug the standard base station that came with the Deebot and place the new Auto Empty Station against a wall in an area at least 1.64 feet away from objects on either side and facing anything that’s 4.92 feet.
The auto-vacuum station raises the total cost of the robot to $1,049.98, which isn’t insignificant, but it’s still $50 less than the self-emptying iRobot Roomba s9+ doesn’t offer to mop.
If you do not select the Auto Empty Station, you will need to empty and empty the trash bin after each use or run for smaller jobs.
Conclusion
Ecovacs Deebot Ozmo T8 AIVI is a unique robot: part vacuum cleaner, part mop, part home monitoring device. It boasts advanced mapping and navigation features that allow it to successfully detect and avoid many obstacles that other floor mopping robots would get stuck. From its companion app, you can move the robot around and watch a live video stream of what’s happening in your home. While it doesn’t come cheap at $800, it’s the most feature-rich vacuum/mop combo we’ve tested.
Meanwhile, if you’re looking for a combo vacuum/mop that gets the job done with fewer bells and whistles, the $600 Roborock S5 is a good choice without the surveillance features at home. Or, if you want a dedicated mop that supports cleaning solutions, not just water, check out the $500 iRobot Braava Jet m6.
