Advantages and disadvantages of Dell PowerEdge R330 server

Advantages: fast, high capacity storage, many options are upgraded, quality remote management.

Disadvantages: A slightly noisy cooling fan, confusing storage options

Its first SMB and remote server search engine should be tested on the Dell PowerEdge R330 because it has a lot to offer. The success of 12 generation R320 is really worth it, it supports the latest ‘Skylake ‘Xeon E3-1200 v5 processor and more DDR4 memory it has improved storage options and performance.

It is not priced exorbitantly or with a starting price of only 830 pounds. This will be approximate with small businesses of the startup it includes a quad-core 3GHz Xeon E3-1220 v5 CPU and 4GB DDR4 1.2V memory.

Less memory capacity than the R320 has 6 DIMM slots and supports up to 192GB DDR3. However, for most SMEs, we think the maximum memory of 64GB faster than DDR4 in the R330 will still be enough to handle even their most demanding applications.

Both R320 and R330 can be ordered with 8 LFF or 8 SFF hot-plug drive bays, but the R330 has a trick up its sleeve as you can sneak a few SSD SATA 1.8 in drives into the optical drive and it use them as quickly -booting the operating system mirrored drive. It is a surprise that Dell did not choose for M.2 or mSATA SSD to save space, although the SATA 1.8 in SSD is an increasingly rare type of drive.

The storage decision of the Dell PowerEdge R330 server

Cold-swap four-bay system starts with a cable backplane to connect SATA 4 motherboard ports and PERC S130 controller. The dual 1.8in SATA SSD boot options are only available on this chassis, although you’ll be expected to use 2 of the usual SFF slots for this purpose in the 8-drive model.

The S130 supports software-managed, striped and RAID5 arrays for SATA drives only. Our evaluation system is provided with optional PERC H330 Dell controller card suitable in a dedicated slot that brings 12Gbits / s SAS and supports hot-swap.

The H330 has dual ports, 4 mini-SAS connection ports and can be used in both 4 and 8-bay versions of the chassis. It adds support for RAID10 and 50 spanned arrays. In addition, it can be viewed and managed directly by Dell iDRAC8 remote control manager – another useful feature.

If you have a desire for dual-redundant RAID6 arrays, then you will need to control PERC H730 from Dell. It uses dedicated slots similar to H330 and also has 1GB of onboard DDR3 cache.

Scalability, noise and power of the Dell PowerEdge R330 server

The R330 slot easily enters our 1000mm server rack, but, only 24in deep, it will fit neatly into 800mm data cabinet as well. The server came as standard with Dell’s handy LCD screen that changed colors from blue to orange in case of an error to provide at-a-glance server status.

Good internal design makes it easy to maintain and upgrade servers. There is room for two PCI-Express slots, but you will need to add the riser butterfly card when ordering like this is not included as standard.

Cooling is handled by a bank of 3 cold-swap fans in front of the CPU and socket memory. On 4-bay models with riser and 8-bay card expansion models, a fan module should be installed in the left frame.

We found higher noise levels than the ultra-compact ProLiant of HP DL20 Gen9. With our iPad set one meter in front of the server, iOS SPLnFFT application records 41dB for DL20 and 53dB for R330.

The server comes with a 350W single hot-plug power supply and has side doors for a second redundant PSU. Power consumption does not have to worry because our system is measured 48W drawing in standby mode and peaks only 75W with CPU under extreme load.

Remote management Dell PowerEdge R330 server

Dell’s OpenManage Server Administrator (OMSA) provides a neat web interface with lots of important hardware status information along with power monitoring and access to PERC H330 RAID controllers. The following counter shares with the first Gigabit Ethernet ports, but Dell provides an upgraded snap-in card with a dedicated management port. You will need to upgrade the configuration including iDRAC Express 8 iDRAC8 Enterprise license if you want to have full server and remote operating system.

Dell iDRAC8 provides direct access to the server’s PERC RAID controller

Dell’s OpenManage Server Administrator (OMSA) provides local web-based management while OpenManage Essentials (OME) free provides centralized management for all SNMP and WMI-enabled systems. It runs regular network discovery and provides a control panel that displays the status of all systems along with alerts and comfort for graphical reporting.

Mobile users will love the Dell OpenManage Mobile application (OMM) because it can connect to the iDRAC8 controller. We have tested the iOS version on our iPad and found the display of its hardware status and a really useful warning message.

Even better than that, the OMM application can talk to servers running OME so we can keep a close eye on all of our monitoring network systems. The app opens with an overview providing color icons for quick states and we can drill down and check alerts, system logs and hardware details.

OMM iOS Dell’s application is linked to OME and provides mobile users with remote networking and system monitoring

The Dell PowerEdge R330 server is ideal for SMB limited space looking for a powerful first server or upgrading existing systems to deal with their business expansion applications. The countless storage options can be confusing but there is no doubt this flexibility of compact server rack and it cannot be considered a bug for good value and performance features.
