amazon Dragon Star Varnir reviews

Normally, with JRPG games “fan service”, the plot is not something that is invested too much.

The story is clear from the start, with a good side, a bad side, and the mission of the good side is to defeat the bad side.

At the very end, there’s a “worse” third force coming out.

But Dragon Star Varnir “created waves” by escaping from this boring scenario.

The game follows 4 parties.

The Dragons are cruel creatures, and also the most enemies in the game

The Witch is the faction of the protagonists, hate and want to destroy the Dragon.

The Knights wanted to destroy both the Witch and the Dragon to protect the kingdom, so it was the force that directly confronted the Witches side.

The Raven faction, in a nutshell, also destroys the Dragon but with its own intentions, it still ignores the Witches side

With this parties structure, you can not even calculate the flow of the story from the beginning, and that is the most unique feature that makes Dragon Star Varnir stand out.

Not to mention the plot has quite a few knots, lies to make sure you can hardly guess the flow of it as long as possible.

Similar JRPG games often have multiple endings, with the True End ending being the most perfect destination, Dragon Star Varnir is no exception.

However, the special feature is that the game does not too much puzzle you towards the True End, and it seems that it wants you to achieve True End to be successful.

So, a little tip is that if you want to really experience the story in the most perfect way, you need to make sure of two things:

Do not let protagonist Zephy “go crazy”

Do not let anything happen to 3 witch girls

In order for Zephy not to go crazy, in the two-choice questions along the plot, you just need to choose whichever is kind, sympathetic, emotional rather than okay.

As for the protection of 3 little witches … it is for you to explore, but it is not too difficult!

Dragon Star Varnir is a turn-based game, with the stage divided into 3 levels: low-medium-high.

You can freely move the character up and down between floors to have the right formation and attack monsters according to your intention.

You can use normal physical attacks or special skills (will cost SP).

In addition, there are other commands such as changing characters, defending, fleeing, using items … which are generally quite basic in the JRPG game. Therefore, it will not take too long for you to get used to the combat system.

However, between the abilities of the character, the physical attack is normally designed to … quite “waste” so you probably do not want to use too much.

As for the special skill, it takes SP to lower the monster’s blood. In general, both of these combat options are not ideal.

So the best part of the game’s gameplay begins with the Devour abilities.

These skills allow you to “eat meat”, kill most enemies in the game, except bosses, even when they are still blood, even full of blood.

They bring a different wind to Dragon Star Varnir.

Devour’s ability to succeed depends on many factors such as the specific skills you have, your opponent’s weakness and the amount of remaining health.

Therefore, the ideal way to play is to try to beat the opponent to a little blood, then use Devour … or not.

There will be passive skills that ensure the ability of the Devour to succeed at a certain minimum level, such as 20%, and you will want to take advantage of this.

With 3 characters on screen and each character has 20% chance of success Devour, for every 3 turns of Devour, you have 48.8% chance of defeating any monster.

So, regardless of the enemy’s power, with 3 attacks of the character, you have half the chance to destroy any enemy … a bad rate.

Of course, the ratio is still the ratio, and there are a number of other factors that affect it, so if you “head on” Devour without any calculations, it is difficult for you to live.

You need to know the balance between doing what is certain, tactical, such as increasing blood, for example, doing something reckless, proportional, like Devour.

At the same time, the game opens up quite a lot of options for you to conquer powerful monsters without training too much. In other words, you will have to “play smart” than “play hard”.

This brings a new feeling, by winning the powerful enemies, but not following the traditional tip to kill them.

And yet, using the Devour skills is what you have to do to help the character to grow, because “kill” the successful monster will bring the character to use Dragon Core of the corresponding monster.

Imagine Dragon Core as a skill tree. Each monster has its own Dragon Core, and each Dragon Core has its own skill systems that add stats or “unlock” different skills.

Therefore, you will want to eliminate powerful monsters to equip your Dragon Core characters with good skills, and Devour will allow you to do this without really having to training too much.

Moreover, with Dragon Star Varnir, you don’t really want to spend much time, because the more you spend time in battle areas, the more you neglect the 3 witches (mentioned above), the more you lead. to … bad things will happen, and you will lose True End!

In short, a highlight of the game’s play mechanism is the “brave but smart” fighting style, combining the chance of chance and tactical calculation.

An unpredictable storyline and a mechanism of “bad luck thinking” create a pretty unique product in Compile Heart’s “choir”.

However, in the end, the game was built with the purpose of “fan service”, so it has not been able to “fully bloom”.

In terms of characters, the game invests in 2D frames that are “much stronger” than the 3D world.

In 2D frames, the game most clearly shows the characters, lines, freshness, attractive, expressive … At the same time, the characters almost always talk in 2D frames.

And the 3D world of the game is almost for action, adventure and battle.

And where the “fan service” is more and more, invested to attract only.

The 2D graphics of the game are extremely lively, beautiful, almost nothing to decry. But the 3D graphics part is nothing special, quite average, if not outdated compared to technology now.

The background is also not much, not unique, repeated between regions.

Of course, it is fair to say that making beautiful 3D graphics is much harder than making beautiful 2D graphics, but in general, 3D is really the area that Compile Heart needs to invest more.

In terms of sound, the game has quite melodious background music, supporting dialogue and combat.

Finally, the game also incorporates a lot of emotional details between the characters that are quite forced into the plot … Normally, this is also not to be blamed because many similar games are the same.

In short, if Compile Heart less invested in “fan service”, and devote their efforts to “cover” on other aspects to build a more complete product, Dragon Star Varnir will be a “heavy” game.

But at least this product is much better than other games of the same type.

The game is a positive step, so hopefully Compile Heart can promote this in the future.
