Will EarFun Free 2 win users’ hearts like what its predecessor can do with changes in appearance, control, features, and diaphragm?

Despite launching a series of headphones with outstanding performance compared to the price range, EarFun’s first product, Free, still receives users’ attention. It must be right; when this has created a buzz for this audio company, besides receiving an award from CES 2020, it also created a phenomenon on the Amazon e-commerce site.

By 2021, EarFun continues to announce an upgraded version of this pair of headphones called EarFun Free 2, with many changes in the external design, features to the diaphragm to create sound. Whether these changes are positive to create another great product or a step backward, we will find out right away in this article.

Design changes, but the box features remain the same. Headphones can play music for 7 hours, and add 23 hours of this box to a total of 30 hours. We will still have the Qi wireless charging standard when we can’t find a wired charging port.

And when it comes to headphones, we also find design differences. The new version has been made of a single piece of plastic instead of having multiple pieces joined together like the first generation, for a more seamless.

The company can do this because Free 2 has also switched to using touch controls instead of buttons like the first version. Free doesn’t have a button with a strong force to cause discomfort or anything, but switching to touch also gives me a more modern feel.

The headset is still equipped with a waterproof standard up to IPX7, which is the highest standard today that allows users to bring both headphones to the pool to enjoy music.

The most significant change is the things we can’t see outside, including the chip-set and the sound-producing diaphragm. With the Free 2 version, EarFun decided to equip the headset with the Qualcomm QCC 3040 wireless control chip-set, which has been used in new generation high-end headsets such as Lypertek Z3, Lypertek Z7 and Noble Falcon 2, Falcon Pro.

QCC 3040 gives Free 2 many connectivity upgrades, including Bluetooth 5.2, CODEC apt-X, Qualcomm TWS Mirroring to reduce latency, increase transmission quality than Bluetooth 5.0 of the first version; noise cancellation feature Microphone CVC 8.0. In addition, the company is also equipped with a Gaming Mode feature, allowing the headset to be only 60ms late (6% of 1 second) from the source, extremely valuable for those who use headphones to play games and enjoy movies.

Equipping a high-end, modern chip-set shows EarFun’s determination to bring the best wireless experience to users, even at an affordable price range like in Free 2. So what about the sound quality of these headphones? Unlike the first version that used a Graphene-coated (carbon-shaped) diaphragm, the new version of EarFun has switched to a Dynamic Composite driver, similar to the more advanced EarFun Air pair. However, EarFun has shaped the company’s general sound pattern, so despite changing the diaphragm technology, the Free two still retains the sound quality quite similar to the first version:

Since then, the most prominent sound range of EarFun 2 is the bass range; right from the first time we put the headset on our ears, we also realized this. Bass is thick but not annoying, about 7 out of 10.

The bass of the Free 2 plays quite deep, without a feeling of roll-off when down to the sub-bass range. Mid-bass is also not reduced in volume, creating a light boomy feeling. With the song More than you know by Axwell / Ingrosso, Free 2 creates an explosive atmosphere, slightly encroaching on other bands, but this is also predictable for bass-oriented ears- head.

Having a strong bass and hitting quite strong, the mid-range will also have to move back slightly. That makes the Free 2 not the ideal pair of headphones for playing Vocal music that is more vocal; on the contrary, the Pop songs of Lady Gaga, Maroon 5, or Lil Nas X are still fully performed. The mid sound is also adjusted in a thick and powerful form, so even if it goes back, it still has a certain position.

I find it quite good in Free 2 that the company slightly pushes the treble up a bit. This treble does the task of “lifting” the entire sound quality to be brighter, but it retains the naturalness, not as bright as the headphones that follow the V-shape trend. This way of doing treble, in my opinion, is more reasonable, increasing the music mixing ability of the headset, not making Free 2 too constrained to a certain genre of music. However, Pop will still be its strongest point.

EarFun, since its inception, has created pairs of headphones that are “quite at the price range,” making users wonder why they are so cheap. Free 2 will also continue this tradition, with a more modern design, new Qualcomm QCC3040 chip, IPX7 water resistance, and super bold, super vibrant sound quality.

Free 2 also makes me curious to see if the company can launch any more valuable products at higher price ranges this year, maybe Air 2, Air Pro 2, for example, very worth it to look forward.
