Since its establishment at the end of 2018, EarFun has made a name for itself with pairs of True Wireless headphones with some features beyond the price range, the vibrant sound quality at a low price. But this is probably also the reason that many people ignore a product that is also worth paying attention to, which is the EarFun UBOOM speaker. Unlike its headphone brethren, the UBOOM is a simple, unobtrusive speaker that excels at its main mission: sound quality.

This speaker is packed into a square box, one height up in the speaker’s direction inside.

Unlike the simple gray front, next to the speaker box is a yellow side, printed with the product’s name.

Quite similar to the speakers on the market, UBOOM has accessories that only include manuals and a USB Type-C charging cord, nothing much.

That is our speaker for today. As mentioned, this speaker has a rather subtle design, not too flashy. The speaker body is cylindrical, but the top will be a bit more streamlined than the bottom, surrounded by braided fabric to add a little highlight as well as for a firmer grip.

The only difference in the speaker’s color is the fabric ‘ear’ to hook into the car, hand on it. Unlike the XB23 from Sony, the ear on the UBOOM is made a bit small; if the company makes it a little bigger, it will be easier to hang the hook.

The speaker’s connection ports are hidden behind a plastic layer to ensure IPX7 water resistance, including 1 USB Type-C port and a 3.5mm port for listening to music in the form of a plug when the speaker runs out of battery.

Waterproof standard up to the IPX7 threshold makes UBOOM quite resistant to the impact of water; you can even bring the speaker into the pool and bring it up without fear of the speaker being damaged.

The speaker control buttons are located at the top of the speaker, recessed below to keep the design seamless. We have an on and off button, volume up and down, a button to connect two speakers to play stereo music, and a switch between 2 audio modes, indoor and outdoor, which we will learn about right below.

Finally, the speaker has a battery life of about 16 hours, surpassing the Sony XB23 but losing more advanced products from Sony and LG.

Speaking of which, we have yet to find a point where UBOOM is completely superior to other options on the market, especially with the two Sony and LG brands that we have mentioned quite a lot. But when it comes to the sound, this speaker shows its outstanding strength with the fairly comprehensive sound quality from low to high; there are very few points to blame.

The first is the bass range; this speaker does not feel lacking in volume when the amount of bass is always quite average. However, the bass performance of UBOOM is very different from Sony’s eXtra Bass speakers such as the Sony XB-23, when pressing almost entirely on the mid-bass, making this part extremely compact to ‘ press which plays to play it,’ without any delay. In other words, UBOOM shows bass in the form of emphasis or because of the ‘hum’ or ‘buzz’ form.

This type of expression also has a slight weakness when taken outdoors, when the speakers from Sony, although listening indoors, are redundant. Still, when taken outdoors, the drum sounds gradually dissipate, becoming fit. UBOOM’s outdoor sound adjustment feature does not increase bass but changes more in the mid-range!

The mid-range of UBOOM also clearly shows the intention of EarFun, which is to create a clean speaker, making the rhythm of the song faster and more vibrant. Anjulie’s voice in Close to the sun is strong, bright, and can easily be ‘poked’ through the bass layer because these two parts are quite distinct from each other. The mid of UBOOM is not ‘afraid’ to go high in the high-mid part, so every time the singer raises his voice, it feels quite escape, like radiating above the speaker instead of emanating from the speaker body. I think that UBOOM’s mid-tone performance is completely superior to Sony’s eXtra Bass speakers when those speakers have a slightly gentle mid-section, almost sinking into the background. Still, sometimes it also lacks the ‘sweet’ and easy listening of LG’s XBoom Go speakers.

The advantages of UBOOM sound quality have not stopped, when even the high part, the speaker also performs well. The high part is very bright, shown ‘cool’; every time we emerge, we hear each sound instead of forming a ‘treble’ in the song’s middle. UBOOM’s treble tweaking is electronic, so I think the company still directs users to use speakers for Pop songs rather than slow, lyrical music.

I must say that I am quite surprised about the sound quality of EarFun UBOOM; it can still be said that it is beyond the price range when playing. Even wins in many respects compared to more expensive speakers like the Sony XB-23!

Sound quality is worth the money.

Before experiencing this, I did not expect too much from the EarFun UBOOM because it is a speaker of a manufacturer specializing in headphone production; how can it surpass the speakers of major brands? But this thought changed when I turned on this speaker; I encountered a fairly comprehensive sound quality from bass to high, giving a clean, elegant, but no less dynamic feeling.

It will be a big challenge for UBOOM to compete with speakers from Sony and LG because these are already big names in the market. In contrast, UBOOM is similar to EarFun’s pairs of headphones, capable of bringing a very high p / p to those who know and own it.
