Appearence

Earsonics is a pragmatic company! Indeed, the products of the company is not beautiful, not flashy unless you spend a small amount of money to design a Custom IEM. Velvet also has a simple look but is easy to use. The ear housing is made of hard, transparent plastic to look inside. Inside the Velvet stuffed driver, the crossover, the wire should look very full and the part feels very mechanical, professional. Previously made Velvet black plastic, but by the end of 2015 to 2016 the company has switched to this transparent shell. If there is such good quality of workmanship, the company is not afraid that customer can to look inside. This housing is huge, much larger than the Shure or Westone, but the wear is actually quite light.

The cord of the headphones is made like the standard ear of other manufacturers. The connector on the ear housing is a very standard 2-pin head that resembles Ultimate Ears, Unique Melody, etc., so upgrading is easy. But the quality of the ear is also quite good. Silver wire is different from the black of most other competitors. The cord is made quite soft, but the braid is strong enough to create a strong feeling. Microphonic is significantly suppressed because of the flexible and lightweight straps and also by the type of ear over the ear. Jack of the headphones made L anti-break. This is not an external jack, just a standard jack.

Fit – Comfort

Although the housing is very large because it contains many components inside, but Velvet wear very comfortable on the ear. Headphones are mostly in the tips, so when choosing the right type, the listener will not feel very comfortable! The earbuds are mostly double-sided, which can be tucked tight to some people, but if fitted, the sound quality is good. When used at home and on the road, I rarely have to increase the volume to hear with Velvet.

Specifications:

Sensitivity: 116 dB / mW

Frequency range: 10 Hz -20 kHz

DCR: 31.5 à 41.5 ohms (Depend on switch position)

Driver: 3 ways with HQ tunable crossover

Sound

The most special of Velvet is the knob on the housing. Users can change the sound of the headset by turning the knob. The company was careful to put 3 small dots on the ear to guide the user to rotate, but still able to rotate the steps between the modes. But one thing that does not change, is the detail as well as the sound of the headphones! This makes Velvet a versatile headset, but always keeps the level of a high-end product!

Detail – The soundtage

As mentioned above, Velvet’s velocity and detail is the bright spot of the headset. No matter which mode to turn, the sound field always has a very open and airy feeling. Velvet’s velocity is good in both width and depth. Although the overall sound is not as bright as the “unrestricted” sound like open earphones, Velvet’s wide ear widths make the listener feel comfortable. The instruments are well-arranged, with dynamic range and sound, which makes Velvet feel like creating a three-dimensional listening space, rather than just expanding on either side. Listen to “Oh, Atlanta” by female singer Alison Krauss, guitar sounds like coming out of the housing of the headset, even behind the head of the listener. Still know that this sound field can not be compared to the relaxed and “true” sound of Fullsize ear open, but enough to put listeners to the limits of an Inear headset!

In addition, detail is something that Velvet can show. Well recorded music is covered by Velvet. The violin and banjo of “Sawing Of The Strings” are extremely clean, detailed enough for the listener to feel the strings and the sharpness of each strings. Although it’s a Universal Inear headset, Velvet’s detail is comparable to that of its unique Melody Mage headset. This is a CIEM headset that UM Electronics is proud of in terms of detail and sound. Surprisingly, Velvet has fewer drivers, with each driver bearing a greater range of sounds, but still more detailed than the high-end Custom.

The dynamics of the headset is also worth mentioning! Usually dynamic is not worth talking about in Inear headphones because this is not an easy part to do. Velvet in soft ballads, always keep the sound is very smooth, small volume to feel comfortable for the listener. But when it comes to pop, dance, the headphones are capable enough to produce powerful sound. Here we are not talking about increasing the volume at the source, but the headphones have good dynamics, making the smallest and largest sounds have such a strong difference. Because of its high dynamic range, Velvet is able to play more genres of music without the slightest feeling of uncomfortable.

Mode 1 – Singer’s voice and high notes (mid & treb)

The company calls this mode “Tight sound”, everything is neat, clean as possible! This mode centers around the midpoint, the vocalist always has the highest position in the score, while the high pitch is still on the highest notes. This is also the mode in which the bass is controlled most strongly.

Velvet is a “warm” and “bass” type of headset so it is not surprising that in the least bass mode the earphones are still heavy. Bass is above average, obviously a surprise as it is a Balance Armature headset with only 3 drivers. The velocity is the same as Dynamic Headphones, but the way this part of the Velvet shows the strength of the BA headphones. Controls play, all the sounds emit into a certain position and very round. The speed of the drums can not be called fast, but obviously there is no leftover or excess bass disturbing the listener. In this mode the drum sounds the hottest and the best, slightly lyrical compared to the other two modes!

The tune is the most highlighted in this mode. The singer’s voice is always up high. The vocalist in Velvet is quite different from the deep, warm and wet type of SM64, which is more dry and more vocal. This also makes the listener feel more “clean”, more detailed but this is personal opinion, each play has advantages and disadvantages. Mid is pressed lightly into the high mid make the voice light up, even slightly thin with the music of some people. Surprisingly, Velvet handles Sibalance very well, even when the mid has been very bright, forward and even slightly dazzling like this. The female vocalist, male, has a certain balance, less warmed up or thorns!

High in this mode is highest. But to be fair, Velvet is not the most powerful earpiece on this part! Treble like Cymbal or Hi-Hat, wind chimes are always put back behind the ears to bring more to both sides. High tone is not rolled off early, but not sharp to create strong points. The strong thing in this high-pitched game is that the listener will not get tired of hearing the music for a long time. It is understandable that the Velvet towards a warm and easy to hear so the treble can not be too sharp. High volume repackage is also quite high and there is an extremely spacious playing space. It is also possible to say that Velvet’s soundtage is good partly because of the high pitched side.

Mode 2 – Balanced and easy to hear

Perhaps the easiest mode for many genres and the first one is mode 2. According to the supplier chart, Velvet will have a fairly balanced sound with all parts of the bass delivered to zero levels. The emphasis is on the lighter part of the vocals and the height is slightly reduced compared to the 1.

The velvet of this mode is brought back to the level that it considered “just right”! But for the majority of listeners is still quite a lot of bass, played in a very violent way! The bass volume, including the bass, is slightly higher than that of the first. The drums are still very deep, even louder, as they are deeper. The bass speed has been reduced in part, the drum sounds longer. The Eagles’ “California” drumbeat was uncluttered, with no glow in the same way as in the previous mode, with more light in the ear. The good thing is that in this mode, the velocity of the punch is very good, making the listener feel the tension, the softness of the drum!

The tune in this mode is the easiest to hear! The high mid was put on average rather than being put up too high as mode 1, the lower parts feel a little more warm. The vocalist still has a high position in the music, but is thicker than the other, which is slightly above the ear. Allice Carreri’s “Comment Te Dire Adieu” is therefore warmer, though still very balanced compared to other headphones. If you hear the SM64, S-EM6 or Audio Technica IM02 see the Velvet are mid cold, listening to 1-2 song are so lifeless. But listen to a new time to see that this is purely beautiful mid-tone, full-range balance and great detail!

High tone in this mode is also slightly lightened. It will not make people hear the thorn with soaring sounds, but bring a lighter, warmer direction. The great thing is that the amount of treble does not decrease much, moreover the playing space is still so spacious. The treble in the background in the song Baby Mine is quite good, not outstanding but also avoid the phenomenon of glare. In this mode, all three bands provide a much more fuller feel, but the detail and distance between the components is still very good!

Mode 3 – V-shape for those who like the vibrant

For those who love dance music, pop, EDM and still want the detail and sound of the Earsonics then surely Velvet placed in mode 3 will be a great choice! The company has pushed the sub bass of the headphones to the highest level, making the singer sink and the height is still very high, the definition of a V-Shape headphones!

Perhaps the bass is the most affected part of the mode. In this mode, the company pushes the bass level to the highest, most in the sub-bass. The bass volume is even greater, even more so many headphones use dynamic driver. Bass is played more softly, but also so that speed is not as fast as the other two modes. Metal or Rock music will no longer play this mode. The bass is also softer, so it is highly diffused, stretched for a long time and spread to both sides of the ear. Punching is almost unchanged compared to mode 2, but is slightly lighter than mode 1 because the sub is much more advanced than near mid-range. The more you need bass will like this mode, the EDM, House suddenly become more intense and exciting!

The warm and thick part also has a slight effect on the middle part. The company dropped back and forth, especially the high and low mid-range, so the singer’s voice was less prominent. Alison Krauss’s voice in Baby Mine is not high anymore, the airy level is also slightly reduced. The Velvet-centric part of this mode is somewhat similar to the SM64, which is quite warm and diminished at higher altitudes. Female voices become softer, not up to the highest notes. But also because the singer is easy to hear, less prickly.

High because of the overwhelming of the bass so feel lighter. But in fact, the high sound does not decrease at all. The background treble sounds are taken more backwards to make room for the bass. The treble also follows the general sound of the headset, warm and sweet is easy to hear!

Ability to play musical instruments

Velvet is a versatile headset. The Jazz, Vocal very gentle also can play comfortably, the post EDM or Trance just need to turn a bit more bass is able to play like the bass Dynamic bass. But Velvet can also play instrumental music very well.

Perhaps the guitar is Velvet’s best instrument. Otter Liebert’s Up Close album is a good example. Because the midriff is more bar-like and warm than the SM64 or S-EM6, the Velvet earpiece shows the best guitar ever heard. The guitar sound is quick and sharp enough. In addition, the headphone sound is very good, so people not only hear the sound but also feel the pressure from the guitar to the ear. In addition, the low mid section and deep bass of the Velvet also makes the bass strings of the guitar very thick, but completely retain the details and clean.

Summary

Not the most expensive headphones, not the Custom series, and not the low-cost headphones, but maybe Velvet is a performance / price headset. the best of the firm. This is a 3-tone-in-1 headset, which can fit many people but still keeps the detail and sound very good. The only downside to Velvet is that the price is not cheap.
