amazon Ecovacs Deebot N79S reviews
The Ecovacs Deebot N79S robot vacuum offers powerful cleaning, app control, and Alexa voice command support at an unbeatable price.
It’s highly likely that cleaning is an unwanted chore. Investing a few hundred dollars in vacuuming seems like a luxury because cleaning a house is a tedious activity. However, the Ecovacs Deebot N79S is a relatively affordable ecosystem at $229 and outshines any vacuum that we have tested in terms of value. The Deebot features an extended runtime and manual drive, alongside fancy features we see on much pricier vacuums such as app control and Alexa pairing. It also cleans stronger than other vacuums in this price.
Design
The round N79S is pretty basic in terms of looks. At 13.9 inches in diameter, it’s slightly wider than the Eufy RoboVac 11 and iLife A4s (12.2 inches). But it’s a relatively short 3.3-inch, which means it should fit all but the least-breathable furniture. It’s not exactly eye-catching, but its dark chocolate color will go well with most home decor.
At the top, you’ll find an oblong tab containing the AutoClean button and the Wi-Fi indicator above the Deebot and Ecovacs logos. The side is where the power switch is located, the front bumper houses the bot’s infrared sensors, and the back is where you’ll find the removable dustbin. Flip the N79S over, and you’ll see two rotating brushes, the main roller brush, two main roller tracks, a nose wheel, contact charger, and drop sensor.
In addition to the robot and the charging dock, the N79S also comes with remote control. It has a classic look with glossy black paint and a monochrome display. The top of the remote has a Charge button, which returns the bot to the base, and an Auto Clean button. There’s a navigation pad in the center, as well as a Start/Pause button. Below you’ll find two rows of buttons: Schedule, Date-Time, Spot Clean, Room Clean, Wi-Fi Setup, and Edge Clean.
Apps and Alexa
My recommendation: download and hook up the Ecovacs app on your mobile operating system-so, whether that be Android or iOS-to get the most out of it. Select the Ecovacs robot you’d like to set up under the listed products. Then, press the Wi-Fi button on the remote and wait for the beep. After that, you will need to enter the password for your home’s Wi-Fi; also ensure that you are using a 2.4GHz network (since 5GHz is not supported here). Once done, users will have an option to connect to the robot’s Wi-Fi, and from there, the application will work its magic in set up.
Without much success, my phone periodically could not locate the Wi-Fi network for the N79S, causing me to restart the whole setup a few times before finally succeeding. Testing the Deebot R95 with the same app was without a hitch, which is quite confusing.
Once connected, you’ll find the robot’s status on the left side of the app screen and its remaining battery life on the right. Underneath is a directional pad that allows you to control the N79S from your phone. Finally, the bottom of the screen lists all the available cleaning modes.
The N79S is also compatible with Amazon Alexa voice commands. Like the R95, all you have to do is activate the Ecovacs skill in the Alexa app. Once you’ve linked your accounts, you can use an Alexa-compatible device, such as an Amazon Echo, to start and stop cleaning with your voice and ask the robot to return to your dock.
Performance
The N79S is surprisingly powerful. In testing, it was able to easily suck up hair, debris, and dust on my floors. It even picked up a stray USB stick without missing a beat. Other robot vacuums I’ve tested in this price range will misbehave in the face of large objects, so it’s a shock to see the USB drive in the trash.
In terms of controllability, the N79S can navigate around common household obstacles and navigate through different types of floors. It got stuck a few times in, particularly crowded areas, in which case it beeped loudly to let you know it needed assistance. Luckily, it’s an easy fix using the remote or the app. You can schedule cleanings for specific days and times and enable spot cleaning for a specific area or edge cleaning when you want to ensure every nook and cranny of the room is covered.
As for noise, you’ll hear the N79S if it’s nearby, but it’s not too bad as it picks up noise in other areas of your home. And battery life is solid. A single charge helps me clean for about 95 minutes, which is enough for an average apartment or a house floor.
Compare and conclude
While costing only $10, the Ecovacs Deebot N79S provided more powerful cleaning than the Eufy Robovac 11; it also added Alexa voice support and app control. Google Assistant compatibility is another feature the iRobot Roomba 690 brought to the table, and it came at the heavy price of $375. Why, therefore, D79S, with all its little niggling issues in navigation and connectivity, is an absolute bargain.
