EverSpace – Ever since the Roberts brothers (Chris and Erin) established the famed Wing Commander space empire in the 90s – the “golden age” of the sex game, up to now, the shooting simulation game genre. The spaceship has also been around for three decades.

Usually, this type of game is divided into two schools: follow a seamless storyline with “unprecedented” battles, including the faces of the delegates like Wing Commander, Starlancer, FreeSpace, etc. or the open world for players to freely explore, buy, sell, fight and of course, the plot only occupies the second part like Freelancer, Darkstar One, etc.

EverSpace from a German gaming company: Rockfish Games, has “gambled” when it comes to style gameplay “roguelike” (random, highly challenging gameplay and characters dead will not be able to revive, this is a branch of the RPG – NV) and “mix” a little more of the two schools mentioned above.

Is the “roguelike” style suitable for space ship shooting simulation games? Will a little fusion of each of them bring strange, even breakthrough to EverSpace or destroy the game in the blink of an eye?

Anything is possible

The prerequisite, imperative, and MUST HAVE in a space game is that the visual part must be eye-catching and create inspiration and curiosity for players to “fly” and “explore”!

EverSpace brings a “perfect” look, which hits the mentality of “ecstatic beauty,” enough to satisfy you!

The use of precise colors is what I like most at EverSpace: a “bone-cold” blue of ice meteor “forest” sometimes becomes pure transparent when glimmering through the morning light. The sun behind is far away, a color as hot as a desert when the player gets lost in a giant rocky matrix adorned with the image of a broken planet, about to explode. Or rays of electric field flattening horizontally and vertically in a dark purple haze surrounded by graveyards sprawled over wrecks.

And that colorful picture is also embellished by the brilliant “fire flowers,” which are originally the fuel wagons that have been blown up, the sharp hulls that burn violently, are the collisions the shock of the missiles hit …

There is a reason that the spaceship shooting simulation game was (and probably still is now) quite picky about the player; it is because there are too many controls to operate the ship smoothly.

That “nightmare” was inherently “dissolved” by Freelancer nearly 15 years ago when exploiting the power of the mouse to relieve the “burden” for the keyboard! Changing the angle of view using main and auxiliary firepower has become extremely simple since then.

However, some familiar forms of shooting game space ships in the past have remained unchanged such as speeding one-third, two-thirds, full or shutdown, “match speed” of the shipping method to trim the shot line easily, convert the energy shield into blood (and vice versa), etc.

Many games have tried to simplify the above complex tasks to reach a wider audience of “popular” gamers. Still, not all games have achieved their goals: there is no need for cumbersome interface (UI) design and discrete user experience (UX) when using features.

EverSpace has simplified these complexities with an intuitive, easy-to-use interface with just a few simple keys.

Do you want to lift the energy shield fast? Press C now! Ship repair? Go to a clear and simple list of accessories right away; click now for the defective part! On the same listing, you want to create a new gun or upgrade an existing one too! Or instead of pressing a button or boosting the ability to “suck” objects floating in space, as long as your spaceship flies near, they will automatically slip into the compartment!

The other thing the player needs to do is find the material to float around in the wrecks, mine in large meteors, or “gobble” the opponent to collect and, rarely, find a trading station in the blink of an eye. With the level of supply of goods in the form of luck!

The things just told you, they are only present in the “little bit of everything.” Not enough to satisfy the thirst for conquering the boundless universe of “aggressive” players who need to fill the dull, boring match of EverSpace even though the feeling of shooting at the opponent “was like a film”!

With a fragmented background story, sometimes appearing. Yes, players almost don’t care (or even know) who they are, which factions are our side, the enemy side apart from two entities: G&B consortium and Okkar space robbers.

What do you know about them?

The bandits, of course, will attack you right away, don’t ask! What about G&B corporation? In addition to a few trading stations, they wait for you to “accidentally” spray … a bullet hit any property (ship, gas tank, shell, etc.), immediately “up the tendon.” Fired shots at the player! But, such “encounters” with G&B or Okkar are very … a little bit, not as spectacular as we thought!

If we expect EverSpace to bring exciting details, intrigues piling up so that they lead to a climax of “unprecedented” battles like the once-famous FreeSpace game series with dozens of ships battles and aircraft carriers clashed against each other. The style of tight battle rhythm accompanied by “cinematic quality” familiar in each game evolution of the Wing Commander monument. Looking for interesting sales, exotic treasure hunts in multidimensional space that players crawl through the nooks and crannies of stories in Freelancer childhood forget it!

To the part “roguelike” – the gameplay of EverSpace is also straightforward, repetitive, and tasteless when it does not bring a reunion of discovery and dealing with inherent challenges!

Once you “press the gas” into space, you will embark on an endless journey: no spaceships change, no skill upgrades, no landing on any planets to trade or take on missions, do not have the freedom to fly in and out of the mysterious galaxies.

All, according to a restrictive arrangement, is very uncomfortable, not creating excitement and thrill when playing the game “roguelike”!

You will fly all the time, forever according to the “weird” universe map (never seen): there are 3-4 points (nodes) divided into 2-3 lanes like in MOBA games and gathered at one gate teleport. Then, when you get through that gate, you will continue flying with a similar map like that!

Not only confined but the happenings at each destination (node) or literally, the “game screen” is also very tasteless …

You are thrown into a game screen with the following elements always “cyclic”: wriggle between a pile of meteors or wrecks, broken space stations to find lost objects, some sporadic spaceships of bandits the red-marked space hovering, one or two mining ships guarded by two or three small gold-marked spacecraft, sometimes a few clouds of plasma gas hanging indifferently, an antenna tower lurking somewhere to block the waves ” the spaceship’s leap or a space jump portal that leads through another level of gameplay and euphoria, the vicious circle on the top continues even though the game developer “tries” to change the background element, but then too. is “spotted” with repetition by the player (for color, event, and layout)!

Your journey ends only when “out of gas,” drifting, waiting for the ship parts to be damaged to the point of self-destructing or exploding in space for some reason (which is the probability of being shot by the Okkar bandits still happens).

At this point, you will be returned to the upgrade screen with the money you earn and some three “recipes” collected along the way; the rest will be lost: guns or “genuine” items ordered. That is also a unique opportunity for you to improve your skills or buy spaceships (and to be honest, there are only three types of spacecraft that are very poor, less attractive).

The writer spent nearly 20 hours playing to “try” to see if there was anything else in EverSpace, but the only gain was loneliness in a boring cycle, lack of challenge, hard flight without direction.
