Design and structure

The Focal Chorus 700 Series has gone through four generations, most recently the Chorus 700 V Series. In 2013, Focal introduced the new generation Chorus 700 with almost all-around changes from the box design to the loudspeaker. Most importantly, the high-tech driver kit helped overcome the defects of previous generations.
Belonging to the latest generation, the Chorus 714 has three color options: walnut, rosewood, and black style. In particular, black style is a special finish, combining glossy paint and thin skin covering the front and top of the speaker box.

The 714 that we came up with was walnut in color, and the edges were handled to perfection. Chorus 714 maintains the subtle classic style of the Chorus 700, but the structure and technology of this pair of speakers have been fundamentally changed. First, the wall thickness of the tank increased to nearly 30mm; the front panel uses double anti-vibration for the set of 3 drivers. The two sides of the cabinet are designed not parallel to avoid resonance. The outside of the wall is rounded at the interface adjacent to the front. This structural change eliminates negative noise in the high band. The trusses inside the enclosures are also reinforced to prevent vibration and minimize vertical interference. In addition, the steam vent is also recalculated with aerodynamic emulation and computer aids, aiming to reduce resonance and noise reduction.
Each Focal Chorus 714 enclosure consists of three drivers, is tuned 2.5-way, and plays in the frequency range of 52-28,000Hz with a sensitivity of 91dB. At the top is a 25mm tweeter with TNV2 technology – the technical touch of the 700 series speakers. This speaker has a lightweight dome cone made of aluminum and magnesium.

On the TNV2 tweeter, Focal uses a special material called poron as a suspension clip, which is inherited from the top of the Utopia III speakers. This special type of poly (foam) mousse with an open, honeycomb structure and high elasticity is ideal for making TNV2 tweeter’s aluminum/magnesium surround cushions. With its lightweight, long-lasting elasticity, no deformation, Poron helps the TNV2 driver achieve stability, linearity when the diaphragm vibrates along the shaft. This material also ensures consistent performance over time for the tweeter driver. Focal says that by verifying by physical measurements, Poron eliminated 50% of the linear distortion in the 2-4 kHz range – the sound waves are very sensitive to changes and deviations.

Firmly mounted on a metal structure located at the right angle between the front and the top of the enclosure, the TNV2 tweeter has an ideal anti-vibration fulcrum. The diaphragm achieves optimum performance with low noise even in the range of high-frequency.
Strip downs and medium of Chorus 714 are assumed by the mid-bass driver and two woofer speakers of the same size using Polyglass membrane 130mm diameter. That is the membrane speaker technology that made Focal’s name over 30 years.

Polyglass diaphragm of Chorus 714 adds a coating containing microscopic particles of silica that enhances surface hardness, resonance noise reduction without increasing the volume of the speaker membrane. Chorus lines of 700, 714 models only use midrange, and woofer speakers tubers are handled shielded from magnets. With this solution, we can put close to the Chorus 714 Television in the room, listening to a small area without worrying about the speaker’s magnetic field interference image.

Experience

We combine the Chorus 714 with the T + AE Series Music Server, a simple set-up but supports almost all CD, Radio, DAC lossless, or Music Server sources with 100W / 8ohm output power. The mixer uses Rocket 88 speaker cables and NRG-10 power cable, all of which are AudioQuest products.

We care about in Chorus 714 is the high level of improvement that inherits the noise of the previous generation. With guitar, cymbal, and violin tracks, it’s easy to see that the Focal has been diagnosed with the seriousness of the earlier Chorus 700’s high-glare strips. The TNV2 Tweeter was excellent, not only re-creating treble with natural harmony, but even in fast tempo, it kept the same cleanliness and detail. This Tweeter will give Chorus a formidable strength in the midrange segment.
Chorus 714 is not an advantageous bass speaker. However, with an ingenious little set-up, in the listening room under 25m2, we still enjoy the drum sound, although not deep but full. These tracks require high levels are still 2.5-way column speaker pair is playing quite smoothly. The symphonies on the double album “The Very Best of Strauss” were performed very gently by 714 gentle, separated frequencies. In particular, strip downs tangle and create background sounds mature, stable for orchestra. The rare limitation that can be felt in Chorus 714 performances is that the vocals are not expanding, mid-low is slightly short of playing hard to record.

With significant improvements in performance at the high end and technical changes in engineering, the Focal Chorus 714 will outperform the top speakers in the $ 1,500 range. In addition, the ease of use for low power amplifiers is also a plus for Chorus 714 compared to its predecessor.
