Design

The Fujifilm X-A3 is a mirrorless, lightweight (11.6 x 66.9 x 40.4mm, 339g) model. The X-A3’s structure has been upgraded to Fujifilm X-A2 using aluminum on the front and top of the engine, enhancing the sturdiness, durability and dependability of the X-A2.

Unlike the X-A2, the front of the X-A3 was not completely covered with leather. Currently this model has 3 color options: pink, brown and silver. The leather of the X-A3 is brown and pink slightly lower than the two versions of the same color of the X-A2, but the leather is smooth and superior.

Although in the cheap camera segment, like the expensive Fujifilm models, the front of the X-A3 is littered with M / C / S (M: Manual, C: Continuous, S: one shot). This is an enhancement that makes it easy for users to quickly switch focus modes when taking pictures. On the back of the machine is a 3-inch touch screen capable of 180 degrees flipping suitable for selfie. All function buttons are located to the right of the screen for easy one-handed shooting. The topper has a flash light, hot shoe, power on / off, shutter button, shooting mode rotation, Fn button and two other rotary functions. The bottom of the machine is where the battery, memory card. The left side has a flash opening / closing trigger. Connectors with lids are located on the right.

Although X-A3 looks pretty nice but if you look carefully, you may notice some points are not perfect. For example, the latch cover of the connection port is not tight, there is a deviation along the hinge axis. Or, if you place your hand on the upper left edge of your hand to swipe down the side of the screen, it will be very vulnerable to the metal frame hidden inside. These ripples show that Fujifilm is not really careful when finishing the product.

In general, the X-A3 is a lightweight, user-friendly camera, suitable for everyday use. Changes to the X-A3 did not lose Fujifilm’s nostalgic look. Two versions of pink and brown are very suitable for women.

Configuration

Although the camera is for beginners, the X-A3 is equipped with APS-C sensor resolution of up to 24.2MP, support for FHD / 60fps video recording, ISO range 200-20000 (extended 100-25.600). The focus matrix on the X-A3 was also upgraded to 77 points instead of 49 at X-A2, with a continuous shooting speed of 6fps. So, X-A3 is better than “predecessor” in terms of resolution, focus matrix as well as video recording speed. With the above parameters, even X-A3 can be compared to the model of the intermediate camera.

The practical experience shows that the X-A3’s image is very fine detail, typical of Fujifilm. In natural color, the image slightly orange, when moving to the option of plastic film imaging, a slightly green images emotionally suggestive if the content suitable. For the followers of Instagram, Fujifilm’s nostalgic styling will be well suited. It also easily adapts to a variety of lighting conditions, with automatic white balance for consistent and accurate results. Unfortunately, the ability to take photos in low light conditions does not seem to be much improved. Photos taken at ISO 800 acceptable, but when pushed up to 1,600 visible blurred phenomenon.

X-A3 starts up pretty fast, less than 1 second, helping the photographer catch the moment fleeting. Thanks to its compact design, one-handed operation is easy. Flexible flip screen, support for self-portrait experience on smartphone. The user just touches to select the focus point, touch to capture and zoom in just two fingers. People who are not exposed to the camera every time are easy to get acquainted and take pictures with the X-A3. This friendly camera can make friends with every member of the family.

To reduce the cost, Fujifilm does not have built-in viewfinder on the camera body, making it a bit difficult to use outdoors. The shooting depends entirely on the screen, quite inconvenient. The latency of the machine is still a big problem, it always froze after each click.

The battery life of the X-A3 only meets about 400 images and will be lower if the touch screen is turned on. However, the plus point is that Fujifilm has enabled a USB cable to charge directly from the adapter, battery backup or computer … quite convenient.

Function

Previously, Wi-Fi connectivity on the X-A2 was only for photo sharing, now it was possible to remotely control the X-A3 via the “Fujifilm camera remote” software installed on a mobile device. Although not new, this feature is an improvement to help X-A3 compete with rivals.

Sensor and Image Quality

At the heart of the Fujifilm X-A3 is a 24.2-megapixel APS-C CMOS sensor. Unlike the more advanced X-Trans sensors found in higher-end Fujifilm models, the X-A3 uses a conventional Bayer color filter array. While this may seem like a step down, the image quality produced by the X-A3 is still impressive, particularly for an entry-level camera.

The 24.2-megapixel resolution allows for detailed and high-resolution images, making it suitable for a variety of photographic genres, from landscapes to portraits. The sensor’s performance in good lighting conditions is excellent, with vibrant colors, good contrast, and minimal noise. Fujifilm’s color science is well-regarded, and the X-A3 benefits from the same color profiles found in more expensive models, including the popular film simulation modes.

In low-light conditions, the X-A3 performs admirably for its class. The native ISO range of 200-6400 (expandable to 100-25600) provides flexibility for shooting in different lighting scenarios. While higher ISO settings do introduce some noise, the images remain usable, especially when noise reduction is applied in post-processing. The camera’s JPEG processing engine does a good job of balancing noise reduction and detail retention, ensuring that images are clean and sharp.

Autofocus and Performance

The Fujifilm X-A3 features a contrast-detection autofocus system with 49 focus points. While it may not be as fast or sophisticated as the hybrid autofocus systems found in higher-end models, it performs well in most situations. The autofocus is quick and accurate in good lighting conditions, making it suitable for everyday photography.

In low-light conditions, the autofocus can struggle a bit, particularly with moving subjects. However, for static subjects or scenes with adequate lighting, the autofocus is reliable. The X-A3 also includes face and eye detection autofocus, which is particularly useful for portrait photography and ensures that your subjects’ eyes are in sharp focus.

The camera’s continuous shooting speed is 6 frames per second, which is respectable for an entry-level model. This allows you to capture fast-moving subjects, such as children or pets, with relative ease. The buffer capacity is sufficient for short bursts, but it’s worth noting that the X-A3 is not designed for professional sports photography.

User Interface and Controls

One of the key strengths of the Fujifilm X-A3 is its user-friendly interface. The combination of physical controls and touchscreen functionality makes the camera easy to operate, even for beginners. The mode dial on the top plate allows quick access to different shooting modes, including full manual, aperture priority, shutter priority, and program mode.

The rear control dial and the function buttons can be customized to suit your shooting style, providing quick access to frequently used settings. The Q menu button brings up a customizable quick menu on the LCD screen, allowing you to adjust settings such as ISO, white balance, and film simulations without diving into the main menu.

The touchscreen interface is intuitive and responsive. You can use it to navigate menus, select focus points, and review images with ease. The touchscreen can also be used for touch-to-focus and touch-to-shoot, adding an extra layer of convenience for composing shots.

Video Capabilities

The Fujifilm X-A3 is capable of recording Full HD (1080p) video at up to 60 frames per second. While it doesn’t offer 4K video recording, the Full HD footage is of good quality, with accurate colors and smooth motion. The camera provides manual control over exposure settings during video recording, allowing you to adjust aperture, shutter speed, and ISO to achieve the desired look.

The tilting LCD screen is particularly useful for vlogging, as it allows you to see yourself while recording. The camera also includes a built-in microphone, but for better audio quality, you can attach an external microphone to the hot shoe. It’s worth noting that the X-A3 lacks a dedicated microphone input, so you would need to use an adapter if you wish to use an external microphone.

Connectivity and Battery Life

The Fujifilm X-A3 includes built-in Wi-Fi, allowing you to connect the camera to your smartphone or tablet. The Fujifilm Camera Remote app lets you remotely control the camera, transfer images, and geotag your photos using your mobile device’s GPS. This makes it easy to share your photos on social media or back them up to your cloud storage.

The camera uses a rechargeable NP-W126S battery, which provides a decent battery life for an entry-level mirrorless camera. Fujifilm rates the battery life at approximately 410 shots per charge, which is sufficient for a day of casual shooting. However, if you plan to shoot extensively or record video, it’s a good idea to carry a spare battery.

Lenses and Accessories

The Fujifilm X-A3 is compatible with Fujifilm’s X-mount lenses, giving you access to a wide range of high-quality lenses. The camera is typically bundled with the Fujinon XC 16-50mm f/3.5-5.6 OIS II kit lens, which is a versatile zoom lens suitable for everyday photography. The lens offers optical image stabilization, which helps to reduce camera shake and improve image sharpness, particularly in low-light conditions.

For those looking to expand their creative possibilities, Fujifilm offers a variety of prime and zoom lenses, including wide-angle, macro, and telephoto options. The X-A3’s compact size and lightweight design make it an excellent companion for Fujifilm’s compact prime lenses, such as the XF 35mm f/2 R WR or the XF 23mm f/2 R WR.

In addition to lenses, Fujifilm offers a range of accessories, including external flashes, hand grips, and remote shutters. The camera’s hot shoe allows you to attach an external flash for improved lighting, while the built-in pop-up flash provides a convenient option for fill light in a pinch.
