The plastic lid of the Omen 17 2021 can be opened and closed quite easily with one hand, but the lid has a wobbly ring when we accidentally touch the device. Flex and creaking do occur but in moderation. The edges of the screen are quite thin, except for the bottom edge. On the top edge, there is an HD webcam layout.
Oriented to gamers, or those who use it mainly for entertainment purposes, etc., the keyboard on the Omen 17 2021 has removed the Numpad key cluster, the navigation arrow keys are full-sized as normal, and the spacing between keys is comfortable.
The keys are large, the key travel is quite long, the typing is smooth and quite responsive, and the experience is good both when playing games and when working. On the left side of the keyboard, you will see 6 dedicated Macro keys to set up shortcut settings, and key combinations, .. for personal needs. Good idea and interesting to many gamers when playing games, but we often mistakenly press Ctrl and Tab keys with these macro keys!!
The HP Omen 17 2021 that we experienced has 4-zone RGB Led backlighting and Led for each optional key. The Omen Gaming Hub application offers a lot of rich and personalized customization, creating excitement and comfort when typing and playing games. The keyboard frame is sturdy, solid, and stable even when you deliberately hit the keys.
The touchpad has a moderate size for comfortable use, but the surface is a bit rough and the hiss is a bit, the swiping operation is not too smooth but the sensitivity and accuracy are good.
The bottom of the Omen 17 2021 spends half of the area below for the large grille, greatly supporting the cooling system. Through the mesh slot you can also see the cooling system with 2 large fans, the hot air inside will be pushed out through the slots on the back and the right side of the machine. On the bottom, there are also 2 additional speaker slots on both sides of the device.
Connector
The connection ports on the HP Omen 17 2021 are mostly located on the left edge of the machine, we will have a charging power port, an RJ-45 network port, a USB-A 3.2 Gen 1 port that supports HP Sleep and Charge (this port support charging external devices even when the device is turned off). There is also a mini display port 1.4, an HDMI 2.1 port, a USB-C port with Thunderbolt 4 technology in addition to supporting high-speed data transmission, and also a video output port and Power Delivery fast charging technology, Next is the headphone jack with mic and SD card reader slot.
On the opposite right side, there are only 2 USB-A 3.2 Gen 1 ports. In general, we appreciate the layout of the connection ports of the Omen 17 2021, when the multi-wire connection ports are as messy as the ports network, the output port will not cause space entanglement using a separate mouse.
Works with 83Wh battery.
In terms of upgradeability, we have 2 Ram SODIMM slots that support a maximum of 3200MHz DDR4 bus RAM of 64GB, running in Dual Channel mode.
The hard drive in the Omen 17 2021 has 2 M.2 slots, including 1 Gen 4 slot. There is a heat sink for each of these M.2 slots.
The cooling system looks quite majestic, it has 3 copper pipes for heat dissipation, 2 quite thick copper pipes for common heat dissipation for both CPU and GPU, and the 3rd pipe is dedicated to the graphics card. There will be 2 more large metal plates to support heat dissipation for memory chips and voltage circuits.
Display screen
The HP Omen 17 2021 that we currently have is equipped with a 17.3-inch screen, Full HD resolution (1920×1080), using an IPS panel, and has a 144Hz refresh rate, the model code of the screen is AUO AUO0A97. The screen ratio is 16: 9 and the pixel density – is 127 PPI.
The screen gives a wide and comfortable viewing angle to the two sides of the device.
The maximum brightness measured was 353 nits in the middle of the screen, and 350 nits were the average for the entire area, with a maximum deviation of 6%. The corresponding color temperature on a white screen is 7290K – colder than the standard 6500K optimal for sRGB.
You can see how the screen works from a homogenous perspective. DeltaE color aberration is low, usually below 2. The contrast ratio is very good -1590:1.
The yellow dotted line represents the color gamut coverage of the HP Omen 17 2021. Its screen covers 94% sRGB, for vivid, high-definition color and image display quality.
Battery life
In our test conditions: turn off all other programs except for the one we used to test, adjust the screen brightness to 120 nits, Windows Better Performance mode is enabled.
The result of getting the Omen 17 2021’s 83Wh battery is not good! It only gives 1 hour 51 minutes of web browsing or 2 hours of video playback. We are not 100% sure if this is the product’s battery fault, note that the model we used is not a media template, but a product from an online store.

CPU Performance
The HP Omen 17 offers the following CPU options: Intel Core i5-11400H, Core i7-11800H, and Core i9-11900H.
GPU Performance
The list of GPU options promises powerful performance, gamers can choose between RTX 3060 (130W), RTX 3070, and RTX 3080 (we don’t have information on the TGP level of these 2 GPU models).
Gaming
Omen Gaming Hub
The pre-installed Omen Gaming Hub app offers rich customization options: including things related to the keyboard, you can lower the CPU temperature by undervolting, setting fan speed, as well as toggle between the Balanced and Performance modes.
Temperature and cooling system
Stress test
In this test, we let the machine perform light to heavy tasks, gradually pushing the CPU core performance to the maximum of 100%, thereby monitoring the stability of the clock and the temperature of the chip, over time.
Omen 17 2021 seems to have been set up by HP to be “good” regardless of the power settings in any mode, we tested both Performance and Balanced modes. In Performance mode, the fans spin at high speed and they are quite noisy. In a way, the Omen 17 2021 is trying to keep the temperature as low as possible, so it has reduced the core clock to a lower level than even when the Balanced mode is turned on.
The balanced mode will be suitable for a variety of tasks, the noise level is lower and the performance is not lost much. It also gives impressive temperature numbers.
When it comes to GPU temperatures, the Balanced Mode is the right choice. When running the load longer, the core clock is only 24MHz lower than in Performance mode (and 9 degrees Celsius hotter). So in terms of performance is almost unchanged, but the machine will be much quieter. One more interesting thing is that using the fan at maximum RPM does not contribute to better core temperatures or clocks.
The keyboard will be slightly warm when playing games for a long time, and the W A S D key cluster area and the palm rest are a bit warm but not too affecting the user experience.
Advantage
The chassis is sturdy and solid.
GPUs with high TGP levels deliver high performance.
Good component upgrade support.
High color coverage and contrast ratio.
The connection ports are diverse and well-arranged.
Defect
Plastic material is not too high quality.
Poor battery life.
Difficulty removing and upgrading.
