amazon Lexar SL660 Blaze 512GB reviews

Designed specifically for high-end gaming gear, the Lexar SL660 Blaze external gaming SSD promises to take your gaming to the next level with the extreme performance of up to 2000MB/second read and 1900MB/second write.

Not only that, this portable SSD has a pretty good price in its size range. If you’re looking for high-end gaming where every little bit of speed makes a difference, there are certainly faster drives available but at a higher price, so the Lexar SL660 Blaze SSD is a pretty good choice. But is this portable SSD as impressive as what the company has said?

Design

Lexar has continuously demonstrated flexibility in its product design by expanding into portable external solid-state drives. The SL660 Blaze external SSD is the most outstanding portable gaming SSD today with its high finish and outstanding performance.

The SL660 Blaze Gaming Portable SSD features a compact, sturdy build with a matte black, sandblasted finish for enhanced protection against shock and vibration. The SL660 Blaze is slightly thinner and smaller than the ADATA SE900G while being roughly the same size as the Seagate FireCuda gaming SSD.

One end of the drive has a fancy stylized asymmetrical ring design, which you can hook into a carabiner very conveniently. Especially the RGB LED light emitted from the inner edge of the loop, the colors switch flexibly and vividly when connected, creating a highlight for your gaming corner.

Included with the drive are a removable stand and a durable pouch to add style and enhance the beauty of RGB LED lighting. In general, in terms of design and perfection, Lexar’s devices are too good.

Easy connection, high compatibility

Lexar SL660 Blaze 512GB Gaming Portable SSD is compatible for use with Mac® OSX 10.6+, Windows® 10/8/7, and Android 4.4+. The drive comes with a standard USB Type-C To Type-C cable and a standard USB Type-C To Type-A cable, so it’s very convenient for you to use. On the other end of the drive is a USB Type-C port that supports the USB 3.2 Gen 2×2 specification providing super-fast NVMe performance with speeds up to 2000MB/s read and 1900MB/s write.

Blaze must of course be plugged into a compatible port to achieve the highest transfer speeds, but it is fully backward compatible with USB 3.2 Gen 2, as well as USB 3.1 and 3.0 versions, automatically defaulting to the highest speed. Very few laptops today have native support for USB 3.2 Gen 2×2, but some high-end desktop motherboards do, and desktop PCI Express expansion cards can carry this interface to an older system.

In addition, the Lexar SSD SL660 also supports 256-bit AES hardware-based encryption, which is the gold standard among civilian-grade encryption solutions. This standard helps protect your essential files from corruption, loss, and deletion. Easily create a password-protected safe that automatically encrypts data. Best of all, files deleted from the safe are securely deleted and cannot be recovered.

Performance

To test a USB 3.2 Gen 2×2 external drive like the Blaze, Biareview used a PC with a Gen 2×2 port added via the aforementioned Orico PCIe expansion card. Otherwise use the original 10Gbps USB 3.2 Gen 2 of the test device.

In the Crystal DiskMark test, the Blaze roughly matched its rated sequential read speeds with scores very similar to most other Gen 2×2 external drives. Blaze loads programs and games quickly. Among gaming-focused SSDs, it easily beats the ADATA SE900G and TeamGroup T-Force Treasure Touch RGB, beating the WD Black P50 game drive.

General assessment

Supports USB 3.2 Gen 2×2 and AES 256-bit hardware encryption

Solid aluminum frame, removable stand, and carrying bag

Strong PCMark 10 storage score

Elegant RGB lighting

5-year warranty

Overall, the Lexar SL660 Blaze 2022 external SSD is a good choice to increase storage capacity for gaming devices. The RGB lighting gives it some appeal to complement any gaming setup.

Except for the slightly lower write speed, the Lexar SL660 Blaze still meets the high throughput of USB 3.2 Gen 2×2, as long as your hardware supports that standard and performs well in world load emulation actual of PCMark 10.

The only drawback of this Lexar external gaming drive is that it has a maximum capacity of 1TB. With new AAA games taking up more and more storage space, you’ll likely need to opt for a 2TB or 4TB SSD.
