While 49-inch screens aren’t exactly common, we’ve seen enough of them in the past year or so to know they’re here to last. The LG 49WL95C-W has the same features as the Dell UltraSharp 49 Curved Monitor (U4919DW) we reviewed not too long ago, but it’s enough to be the newest ultra-wide business monitor. It’s a good option if you want to speed up your multitasking by opening multiple windows simultaneously on its large screen.

49 is the new 38

Not so long ago, 38 inches was the hot spot for ultra-wide screens. These include gaming monitors — such as the LG 38UC99-W and Acer XR382CQK, ViewSonic VP3881, intended for photographers, graphic artists, and editor’s video files.

Similarly, the new 49-inch monitors include both gamer models (Samsung CHG90) and business models. They enhanced it by adding more than 11 inches (measured diagonally) of screen space. The 49-inch monitor is a good investment if you’re working with huge excel spreadsheets, monitoring market feeds, or want to see your email, main workspace, and social media activity together at a time.

The 49WL95C-W, as well as the Dell UltraSharp 49, are business monitors. Like the Dell 49, the 49WL95C-W has a 49-inch IPS panel (measured diagonally) with a native resolution of 5,120 x 1,440 pixels for an ultra-wide 32:9 aspect ratio – equivalent to two 27-inch QHDs ( 2,560 x 1,440 pixels).

Although the Samsung CHG90 has the same size and aspect ratio as these two monitors, its native resolution is only 3,840 x 1,080 pixels. That results in a relatively low pixel density of 81 pixels per inch (PPI), and the display wasn’t particularly sharp in our testing. The 49WL95C-W has a higher pixel density of 106 pixels per inch (PPI) – the same as the Dell UltraSharp 49 – and its picture quality for text, photos, and video is very good.

Solid gate, solid frame

Connections on the 49WL95C-W include two HDMI 2.0 ports, four USB 3.0 downstream ports, one DisplayPort 1.4 port, and one USB Type-C port. Two of the three USB ports and an audio jack face outwards on the right edge of the screen for ease of use, while the others face down on the rear. The USB-C port supports DisplayPort over USB-C, allowing you to stream audio and video to the display while also providing power, allowing you to charge devices — including USB-compatible laptops- C — via a USB-C connection. (USB-C cable included with the monitor — some cables support charging but not data transfer.)

I tested these functions using my Dell XPS 13, and they work fine — when I connect the laptop to the monitor, the picture is properly scaled, and I can see the content, audio and video streaming, and laptop charging.

The display, including the stand, measures 17.4 x 47.8 x 12.1 inches (HWD), increasing to 21.4 inches when fully extended and weighing 15.2 kg. The stand supports height, tilt and swivel adjustments. The display has a narrow, barely visible bezel at the top and sides and is about 6mm tall at the bottom. Its front is black, while the back is white and the base is silver. The kickstand feels very solid, with a very wide and curved base.

Enjoyable OSD experience

It’s good to see that LG has included a small joystick on the back of this display, near the right edge. Users can operate on the joystick to navigate the on-screen display (OSD) of the 49WL95C-W. We often see these controllers on gaming monitors but rarely on mainstream monitors. It’s much easier to use this joystick to navigate the OSD of this monitor than it is to control the Dell UltraSharp 49 using its five little buttons.

The joystick is a five-way controller; you can press straight down to open the menu system, then scroll up, down, or side to side to navigate the menu system where you can switch picture modes, input sources, and all settings.

Very good sRGB color accuracy

I measured the 49WL95C-W’s brightness and color accuracy using a Klein K10-A colorimeter, a Murideo SIX-G signal generator, and SpectraCal CalMAN 5 software unit of area) is rated at 350 candelas per square meter (nits); in our testing, it was just above that, at 355.3 nits. I calculated its contrast ratio to be 1,138:1, slightly better than LG’s 1,000:1 rating.

According to LG, the display is factory-calibrated to cover 99% of the sRGB color spectrum; I measured it at 98.3%.

Note that LG specifies that the display’s 99% sRGB color coverage is based on the CIE1931 color standard, while we use the CIE1976 standard. We also mapped our data points using CIE1931; Although we cannot measure the percentage of coverage, by looking at the results, we can say with confidence that it is very close to LG’s figures.

Good for Video and Audio

Video playback on the screen looks very good, with colors displayed bright and realistic. However, given the 49WL95C-W’s ultra-wide aspect ratio, be forewarned that most widescreen movies and video content will be surrounded by two black bars and take up half of the screen.

That is not a model for professional gamers — the 49WL95C-W lacks game-friendly features. Its refresh rate is 60Hz; it lacks adaptive sync technology and includes a game-specific picture mode.

I rarely say that a monitor has a good built-in speaker system, but that is the case with the 49WL95C-W. Its pair of 10-watt speakers provide good volume and sound quality. Both the Dell UltraSharp 49 and the Samsung CHG90 lack built-in speakers. A 3.5mm audio out is available if you use headphones and plug them directly into the monitor.

LG only includes a one-year warranty for the 49WL95C-W, which is frustrating considering the product’s price. Most monitors today come with a three-year warranty.

The LG 49WL95C-W has the best overall of the 49-inch monitors we’ve tested so far. The large screen area and high resolution for its size make it ideal for professionals who need to open multiple windows at once, and its picture quality proves to be good for text, photos, and videos. It has a wide selection of ports, including USB-C. Thanks to its powerful speaker system, if you want to watch a video or elevate your tunes, you can do so without the need for headphones or an accompanying sound system, which is not the case with the Dell UltraSharp 49 or Samsung CHG90.

The LG 49WL95C-W doesn’t come cheap, but you get a lot for your money in terms of features and terms of a slim screen.
