LG’s new criterion focuses on the essentials, and with the LG G7 ThinQ this time, LG brings many worthwhile upgrades compared to the previous generation.

First, let’s take a look at the configuration of the LG G7 ThinQ. Like other flagship on the market, the G7 is also equipped with Qualcomm’s most advanced chipset, the Snapdragon 845 – LG doesn’t want to make the same mistake again with the G7 when the G6 senior at the time of launch was equipped with an outdated chip compared to competitors in the same segment in the market. Depending on the country, we can get both variants of this flagship with 4GB of RAM plus 64GB of storage for the base model and a G7+ ThinQ variant with 6GB of RAM plus 128GB of storage; both support microSD cards for expansion up to 2TB.

In addition, the LG G7 ThinQ has brought back the traditional power button on the right side of the device (users can customize this button to double-click to open the Camera quickly). The fingerprint reader is still there and is located at the back. The horizontal dual-lens camera setup from the LG G5 has also been flipped 180 degrees to the vertical setup on the LG G7 ThinQ.

Referring to the physical buttons, with the G7 ThinQ, LG has integrated an additional button located on the left side of the device below the volume up and down buttons dedicated to Google Assistant – Google’s virtual assistant. LG approached Google with this idea, and the result is that key with three different modes for Google Assistant: press once for voice input. Pressing and holding this button will help you talk to that virtual assistant like you are using a walkie-talkie and finally double-press mode to switch to image recognition mode.

With this new button, you don’t have to say “OK Google” every time you want to “talk” to this virtual assistant. But if you still want to use that voice activation feature, this time LG has fully integrated into the G7 ThinQ a dual-mic set called “Super Far-Field Voice Recognition” capable of capturing voices. User’s speech with a distance of up to 5m, even in a noisy environment, means that there is a high chance that every time you issue the command “OK Google,” it will be much more sensitive and better than other smartphones on the market.

Unfortunately, you can only disable this button but cannot customize it for other purposes.

LG G7 inherits many similarities in design language with the previous V30 series when the G7 also has the same sleek curves on the back of the device or camera placement and four soft rounded corners.

Unlike the previous G6, this time, the V30 and G7 series have IP68 water resistance plus an 810G military rating, so there’s no sacrifice in terms of durability to achieve the beauty G7 has now. LG G7 ThinQ will be sold in 4 colors: blue, black, gray, and red.

LG decided to use a 6.1-inch QHD+ LCD screen instead of the OLED panels found on most high-end smartphones this year. But that doesn’t mean the G7’s display isn’t as good as its competitors: When placed side-by-side, the G7 makes the G6’s LCD screen cheaper than ever, and it’s color quality. The G7’s screen is just as vivid and fresh as the OLED screens on the Apple iPhone X and Samsung Galaxy S9.

According to LG, the screen on the G7 ThinQ can reach 1,000 nits of brightness, and to achieve this, LG has added a fourth layer of white pixels on each screen pixel. Another plus point is that this screen is 30% more energy efficient than the G6’s screen. Super bright screen mode will be automatically activated when the ambient light is very strong. However, it will automatically turn off after 3 minutes. Users can then turn the super brightness mode back on by tapping the “Boost” icon next to the screen brightness adjustment bar.

However, it seems LG has used these power-saving “features” to justify shrinking the G7’s battery compared to its predecessors. To keep the weight of 162 grams and thickness of 7.9mm, only has a 3,000mAh battery, while both the V30 and G6 have 3,300mAh batteries. At least LG still integrates Quick Charge 3.0 fast charging as well as wireless charging for the G7.

Referring to the screen, we cannot ignore the “rabbit ears.” LG aptly calls this the “New Second Screen” because it wants to remind you that before that “notch” trend took hold, LG used to include a small secondary display on the V10, V20, and Q8. If the notch bothers you, LG, like Huawei, allows an option to hide it by painting the areas around it a deep black to make it look like it’s just bezels. In addition, LG also gives an option to make the display parts around the notch more interesting with different colors.

For those who love the audio experience of the V series, LG has brought it to the LG G7 ThinQ. This new phone has the same Quad DAC (digital-to-analog converter) found in the V30 and is the 2nd phone in the world to support DTS:X 3D surround sound via wired headphones.

LG also improved the speakerphone on the LG G7 ThinQ to enhance the audio experience for those who dislike headphones. Called a “boombox speaker,” it can deliver up to 40 dB (decibels) of sound, louder than most other competitors on the market.

The last but not least, the highlight is the Camera. LG has finally upgraded the selfie camera on the front from 5 megapixels to 8 megapixels (f/1.9, 80 degrees).

LG equips two rear cameras with 16MP resolution. One has a normal smartphone angle of about 23mm with a large aperture of F1.6 and optical image stabilization. While the other has a super wide-angle and a smaller aperture than F1.9.

The important point of the Camera on the LG G7 ThinQ is that it is equipped with artificial intelligence (AI) to identify the subject being captured, a scene captured. Thereby offer the appropriate shooting profile and the appropriate filters for photography to achieve the necessary technique and beauty easily.
