Design

In front of the machine is the capacitive touch screen 3-inch size and has only two buttons, green and red (call / end). The resolution is 320×240 pixels screen with orientation sensors. The sensor will rotate the screen orientation in portrait orientation to landscape and vice versa when you rotate the phone.

Equipped with Corning Gorilla Glass, so you do not have doubts about the durability of the screen, capacitive touch helps increase the smooth and handy. The display filter is polarized making the screen can be used under direct sunlight.

Lock / Unlock button with the volume control buttons on its side of the machine located in the left flank, the front has only two buttons call / end. And when you want to activate other features, just one fingertip on the touch screen to complete.

Display

The Nokia Asha 311 features a 3-inch capacitive LCD touchscreen with a resolution of 240 x 400 pixels, translating to a pixel density of approximately 155 PPI. While the display quality may seem modest by today’s standards, it was quite reasonable for a budget device in 2012. The capacitive nature of the touchscreen was a step up from the resistive screens commonly found in other feature phones at the time, offering better responsiveness and multi-touch capabilities.

The screen’s brightness levels are adequate for indoor use, but it struggles under direct sunlight, where visibility becomes a challenge. The color reproduction is decent, though not as vibrant as what one would expect from higher-end smartphones. The limited resolution also means that text and images are not as sharp as they could be, but this is a trade-off that many users were willing to accept given the device’s affordability.

The user interface and experience

Asha 311 runs on the Series 40 interface, designed for touch-screen phone with Asha status notifications bar. The first good point, it is the touch interface and the second best point is status notifications bar, something we only found on Android and iOS devices.

Another good point is that the S40 interface does not support multitasking, so at least you can perform several functions using the status notification bar. Asha 311 can give you the same experience as on the expensive smartphone at a modest price.

Connectivity and Networking

The Nokia Asha 311 comes equipped with a range of connectivity options that were quite comprehensive for a feature phone at the time. It supports 3G networks, which was a notable feature, as many feature phones at that time were limited to 2G. This allows for faster internet browsing, quicker downloads, and improved call quality. The phone also supports Wi-Fi b/g/n, enabling users to connect to wireless networks, which is particularly useful for data-heavy tasks such as downloading apps or streaming music.

Bluetooth 2.1 with A2DP is available for wireless file transfers and connecting to Bluetooth-enabled devices such as headsets and speakers. The phone also includes a microUSB 2.0 port for charging and data transfer. However, the Asha 311 does not feature GPS, which limits its utility for navigation purposes.

The device is capable of serving as a modem when connected to a computer, allowing users to share their mobile data connection via USB tethering. This feature, while basic, adds to the phone’s versatility.

Camera

The Nokia Asha 311 is equipped with a 3.2 MP fixed-focus camera, which, while basic, is sufficient for casual photography. The absence of autofocus means that close-up shots may lack sharpness, and there is no LED flash, so low-light photography is challenging. The camera interface is straightforward, with options to adjust settings such as white balance and exposure, though the feature set is limited compared to more advanced smartphones.

In good lighting conditions, the Asha 311 can capture reasonably detailed images with acceptable color accuracy. However, the camera struggles in low-light environments, producing images that are often grainy and lacking in detail. The fixed-focus lens also limits the camera’s versatility, making it less suitable for capturing close-up shots or subjects in motion.

The phone can record video at a resolution of 480p at 25fps, which is adequate for basic video capture but falls short of the quality offered by contemporary smartphones. The lack of advanced video features means that the Asha 311 is not the best choice for users who prioritize video recording.

Multimedia and Entertainment

Despite its modest specifications, the Nokia Asha 311 offers a variety of multimedia features that cater to entertainment needs. The device comes preloaded with several games, including a full version of Angry Birds, which was a popular title at the time. This inclusion was part of Nokia’s strategy to attract younger users who were drawn to mobile gaming.

The music player on the Asha 311 is fairly basic but functional, supporting a range of audio formats including MP3, WAV, WMA, and AAC. The interface is simple, with options to sort music by artist, album, and playlist. Sound quality through the phone’s loudspeaker is average, but it improves significantly when using headphones. The device also includes an FM radio with RDS, allowing users to tune into their favorite stations on the go.

The video player supports common formats such as MP4 and H.264, though the limited screen resolution and size make it less ideal for watching videos. The phone can handle basic video playback, but more demanding files may not play smoothly.

Apps and Software

The Nokia Asha 311 comes with a selection of pre-installed apps, many of which are geared towards social networking and communication. These include apps for Facebook, Twitter, and WhatsApp, which were essential for staying connected in the early 2010s. The inclusion of WhatsApp is particularly noteworthy, as it allowed users to engage in instant messaging without needing a smartphone.

The Nokia Store provides access to a wide range of additional apps and games, though the selection is more limited compared to the app stores on Android and iOS. Many of the available apps are lightweight versions designed to run on the relatively modest hardware of the Asha 311. This includes utilities, productivity apps, and additional games that can enhance the device’s functionality.

Nokia Maps is also included, providing basic navigation and mapping capabilities, although the lack of GPS limits its accuracy and usefulness compared to more advanced navigation apps on smartphones.

Battery Life

One of the strengths of the Nokia Asha 311 is its battery life, which is powered by a removable 1110 mAh Li-Ion battery. Given the phone’s modest hardware and lower power consumption, it can easily last a full day of moderate use on a single charge, and often longer with lighter usage. Nokia advertised up to 14 hours of talk time on 2G, 6 hours on 3G, and up to 744 hours of standby time, which were impressive figures for the time.

The phone charges via a microUSB port, and it takes about 2-3 hours to fully charge the battery. The inclusion of a removable battery is a practical feature, allowing users to carry a spare battery for extended use or to replace the battery easily if it begins to degrade over time.

Applications and Features

Another good point that you will experience with Asha 311 is the ability to support 3.5G and WiFi access. Certainly browsing on Asha 311 will make you forget the preconceptions about Asha phones.

Asha 311 is also equipped with a decent quality camera, 3.2 MP camera with 256MB storage space, which can be expanded up to 32GB via microSD card if you need more memory. The app includes Facebook and Twitter are pre-loaded with the Nokia browser, has been updated to use cloud computing technology. Updated browser will save 90% of the transfer of data to accelerate and bring a better experience when surfing the web.

Performance and energy

Processor clocked at 1GHz is large enough for the high-performance requirements of you, play games and use applications completely without delay. Asha 311 is equipped with 1110mAh BL-4U battery provides talk time up to 7.5 hours on 2G and 4.5 hours connection over 3G, standby time of 711 hours / 3G and 781 hours / 2G. You can listen to music continuous to 40 hours per charge battery.

Conclude

Touchscreen phone Asha 311 is a great choice if you are looking for a mobile device affordable, full-featured and useful. Status notification bar and great touch experience is enough to bring about advantages for the Asha 311.

The only thing Asha 311 can not make you satisfied that the operating system does not support multitasking but you absolutely can listen to music in the background while performing other work. Additional, you also can check new messages via the notification bar.
