Design

The Pentax KP is sturdy and weather resistant, as does the same brand. This quality is further emphasized by the relatively compact size, only 13.2 x 10.2 x 7.6cm. To envision, the Pentax KP is more compact than the original DSLRs from Canon and Nikon. With a weight of 640g, the handset feels heavy enough.

A small but subtle detail in the Pentax KP is the ability to change the gum pad. There are 3 different sizes of tiles to meet the user’s preferences. This is a new smart gadget just seen on KP. In addition to the weight of the camera body and the standard softness of the shutter button, the shape of the shutter is also an important factor in the stability of the imaging.

Leveraging the excellent design of the Pentax K-1, KP’s control system is also very good. At the top of the machine, the right side of the hoop has a rotation that allows for quick adjustment of parameters and features without going into the settings menu. All of the rotary knobs are rubberized and have soft grip, buttons, scoop are tight and are arranged reasonably, easy to manipulate. Perhaps camera collectors will not like these rubber-coated parts as they are often degraded by other metal components.

Regrettably KP’s screen is slightly hard to open, and the edges are quite wide, which makes the display area slightly smaller. The cover of the viewfinder is too flat and shallow, so it is difficult to avoid falling into the light.

Pentax KP comes in two basic colors: black and silver. The frame is made of magnesium alloy, the silver exterior paint gives a good impression of a sturdy, durable and clean metal structure.

In general, the design of the Pentax KP is quite good, compact but solid and durable. The unique design of the camera, as well as the Pentax K-1, is unmistakable.

Configuration

The Pentax KP is equipped with 24.3MP APS-C size sensor. This sensor meets the ISO 819,000 light sensitivity, which is anti-shake 5-axis, without the use of low-pass filter less. Screen size of 3 inches, 921,000 colors. Optical viewfinder 100% frame with 0.95x magnification. The device supports GPS, Wi-Fi, USB 3.0 connectivity …

KP’s focus system consists of 27 phase-sensitive spots, including 25 crossings. The machine uses both mechanical and electronic shutter. Electronic shutter responds to the fastest shutter speed of 1 / 24,000s, continuous shooting speed of 7fps. It can record video with the highest quality as full-HD (60fps), continuous recording time up to 25 minutes maximum.

Experience shows that Pentax KP snapshot, good sharpness, high detail, true color, high ISO noise is processed smoothly. The shutter button is very soft, the press range is quite short, minimized vibration, sure and accurate in each click. Ignore difficult to open the screen, the other operations are easy to implement, not entangled. Promoting strengths from Pentax K-1, the human skin color is beautifully reproduced by KP. In full auto mode, the camera still captures very good, dark and well defined depths, while the detail is still quite noticeable, and feels a bit like Pentax K-1.

Short battery life is a minus point, perhaps because the design of the knob reduces the space required for a larger battery. However, users can install additional slots additional battery D-LI109 or D-LI90. Unfortunately, Pentax only equips KP with a memory card slot, which reduces the professional impression. This is a negligible savings but loses an important competitive advantage.

Function

The Pentax KP is one of the few DSLRs that possesses many interesting and intelligent shooting features that can be compared to DSLMs. There is a fact that the camera companies that dominated the DSLR market are still quite conservative, not changing over time. But since Ricoh, the Pentax brand is proving that they are not in that group.

Some noteworthy new features on the Pentax KP include Additive and Comparative brightness – features that allow for multiple exposure of the image, in separate areas, are very useful when shooting fireworks, night, urban traffic and buildings in the evening. In addition, the Astrotracer feature adds a new mode to easily capture astronomical images.

There are also Depth-of-field Bracketing and Motion Bracketing that allow quick snapping of 3 images, focusing on each area with varying depth of field, or blending exposure to blur the motion.

Conclude

With its neat compact structure and powerful features, the Pentax KP is capable of competing effectively with Canon and Nikon’s renowned DSLRs, even compared to many advanced DSLM models thanks to their intelligence and maneuverability.

Here are some shots taken with the Pentax KP body with a Pentax HD 20-40mm F / 2.8-4 ED Limited DC WR lens. The body and lens are priced at about $2000 – the perfect pair in the Ricoh family – Pentax.
