RemoteLock OpenEdge RG Deadbolt is a smart Wi-Fi lock that you can control anywhere and integrates with several vacation rental platforms.
When we reviewed the LockState LS-500I in 2014, it was the first Wi-Fi-enabled smart lock for its ease of installation and ability to be Control from anywhere. Since then, LockState has changed its name to RemoteLock, and smart locks have become a staple of the connected home. With the OpenEdge RG Deadbolt ($249), RemoteLock once again offers an easy-to-setup Wi-Fi-enabled key. It integrates with many vacation rental platforms and offers loose integration with August and Ring doorbell devices, but it lacks third-party support and multi-protocol capabilities.
Design and Features
The OpenEdge RG is a complete lock assembly consisting of a keypad, an internal guard, a latch assembly, two keys, and mounting hardware with illustrated installation instructions. It fits doors 1-3/8 inches to 2 inches thick with standard 2-1/8 padlock holes and 1-inch latch holes. If your door doesn’t have a pre-drilled hole, you can use the included template and detailed instructions to drill it yourself.
The keyboard component, located on the outside of the door, measures 5.2 x 3.2 x 1.5 inches (HWD) and is designed for indoor use only. However, you can purchase a weatherproof outdoor visor for an extra $35. The keyboard has a Polished Brass, Brushed Bronze, or Satin Nickel finish and features ten backlit rubber round number buttons (0-9) and a LockState button used for entering codes, locking locks, and setting up keys program. It also has a keyed cylinder that allows you to use it as a traditional keyed padlock.
The interior escutcheon measures 7.5 x 2.8 x 2.7 inches and features a thumb knob for manual locking and unlocking. Behind the removable cover is a compartment for four AA batteries (not included) and a reset button. According to RemoteLock, four batteries will last up to a year when the lock’s heart rate interval is set to one hour (the default).
Here’s how it works: The dongle’s Wi-Fi is off by default to save battery, use Heartbeats on Wi-Fi quickly to connect to the internet to update mobile unlock and lock requirements, and switch the status of the key to your mobile app or web console. If you set the Heart Rate interval to five minutes, the battery life will be reduced to one month. You can set the dongle’s Wi-Fi to Always On, but be prepared to use four AA batteries every few weeks, depending on usage. That is why most smart locks use bridging protocols and Bluetooth, Z-Wave or Zigbee because they don’t use many batteries. However, it would help if you usually had a Wi-Fi-enabled hub to control these types of locks remotely.
The lock can be controlled using the mobile app (for Android and iOS) or from a PC with a web control panel. The mobile app allows you to lock and unlock your door and view lock operations such as when the lock was opened and by whom, and it will also let you know how the lock was opened or closed manually using the knob or not and when new users are added. You can add access (regular) and guest users and add new keys to your account using the mobile app, but most key settings can only be accessed using the web control.
The dashboard uses a colorful dashboard display that tells you the battery status of your lock and has a graph showing lock, unlocks, and access denied events. Here you can also see if the lock has any mechanical problems, view a list of users, and view events. Tap the Access tab at the top of the screen to add users, create an access schedule for each user, and create schedule exceptions for holidays. The Integrations tab takes you to a screen to connect to one of the supported vacation rental websites and integrate with August and Ring devices. For example, you can access the LockState app directly from the Ring app to lock or unlock OpenEdge when you see someone out there, but it won’t activate and can’t be activated by these devices. Other web functions include admin logs, notification settings.
The key requires an EdgeState Cloud subscription. $3 per month Basic plan includes one key and allows you to grant access to up to 25 access users and up to 75 guest users (guest access expires in 90 days). You have a 60-day active history and can add more keys for an additional monthly fee of $3 per key. The Premium plan costs $6 per month and gives you up to 50 visitor users and 150 guest users, and you get a 90-day history. Additional courses cost $6 per month. The Business plan is $9 per month (additional keys cost $9 per month) and supports up to 100 visitor users and 300 guest users, and you get a 180-day history. The Enterprise plan costs $12 per month and gives you unlimited access and a full year of history and guest users. Each additional course costs $12 per month.
OpenEdge does not support Amazon Alexa or Google Assistant voice commands, nor does it support Apple HomeKit or IFTTT apps like August Smart Lock Pro + Connect. However, it works with home control platform Vera and some impressive vacation rental platforms, including Airbnb, HomeAway, Escapia, Guesty, and VacationRentalDesk.

Settings and Performance
The OpenEdge RG key is easy to set up. I removed the old lock and installed the new one using two of the included wood screws. After making sure the latch was retracted, I slid the keyboard assembly into the hole, making sure the tail section fit easily into the latch center while threading the power cable under the latch assembly. I attached the mounting plate to the keyboard assembly using two long mounting bolts, making sure to thread the power cable through the hole in the mounting plate. Next, I connected the power cable to the internal heater, threaded the rear end of the vehicle into the battery hub, and attached the inner battery to the mounting plate with two short bolts. I confirm that the crown is working properly, insert four AA batteries (not included) and follow the instructions to install the locking lever.
To connect the lock to my Wi-Fi, I opened the Wi-Fi settings on my phone and selected the SSID RemoteLock. Then I selected my home WI-FI SSID from the list, entered the password, and was instantly connected. I downloaded the mobile app and created an account. At this point, you must sign up for a plan and submit your payment information, including your address and credit card number. Next, I tap the green plus button to add the key to my account and tap Scan QR code to scan the code on the side of the box. I have given the key a name and location, and the installation is complete.
The lock’s keyboard was very responsive in testing. Each keyboard press is accompanied by a bright key and a loud enough beep. Lock and unlock commands using the app and web console is quickly executed when the Beats interval setting is set to Always On and when they are supposed to when Heart Rate is set to 1 hour. User and guest access codes work great and lock on my schedule with no issues. I always get emails and text messages telling me that the lock was locked or opened by a particular user and at what time.
Conclusion
RemoteLock OpenEdge RG Deadbolt is a solid choice for homeowners, business owners, and homeowners who need permanent and temporary interior doors. It’s easy to manage, but many of its management features, such as scheduling, setting up integrations, and configuring notifications, are not accessible from the mobile app and can only be accessed from the mobile app access via a web portal. The lock is easy to install and worked flawlessly in our tests, and it works with many popular vacation rental platforms. It doesn’t offer the same level of third-party support you get with August’s Smart Lock Pro + Connect. Including HomeKit support, the ability to work with Alexa, Google, and Siri voice commands, built-in natively compatible with smart home devices, supports IFTTT applications.
