With the ambition of creating a 2-in-1 multipurpose device (laptop hybrid tablet) to compete with Apple’s ecosystem, Samsung has unveiled the Samsung Galaxy Book, the successor to the Samsung Galaxy Tab pro-S. That is a tablet model running Windows operating system.

The Samsung Galaxy Book comes in two versions, 10.6 inches, and 12 inches, with the larger version starting at $ 1,129. This version is powered by an Intel Core i5 7200U processor (Kaby Lake), 4 GB memory, 128 GB SSD, Full HD + (2160 x 1440 pixels) Super AMOLED touch screen, keypad with S-Pen stylus.

The 10-inch Samsung Galaxy Book Edition starts at $ 629 and uses a 1920×1080 Full HD TFT display instead of AMOLED as the 12-inch version. This version is equipped with a Kaby Lake Core M3 processor, 4 GB memory, and 64 GB SSD. The Samsung Galaxy Book version is $ 100 cheaper than the low-end version of Microsoft Surface Pro 4, which features a removable keyboard but is half the size of the US technology giant.

If you add more than $ 100 to $ 200, you can double the memory capacity of both Samsung Galaxy Book versions. However, the 12-inch version will have 8 GB of memory.

Design

The Samsung Galaxy Book’s biggest minus is in the plastic case. Overall, this is a good tablet, and impressed with the quality of the screen, but the case material is too poor and not worth the price.

Compared to the Samsung Galaxy Tab Pro S predecessor, the Galaxy Book has many similarities in design but thicker. Samsung adorned the 2-in-1 tablet with many highlights, a power button, and a volume knob at the top, a rear camera with a resolution of 13 MP. Meanwhile, the front camera is only 5 MP resolution and does not support infrared to not login using Window Hello.

The Samsung Galaxy Book also comes with an S-Pen pen and turns it into the first computer to have a built-in stylus. This pen can be drawn, written on the screen, and also erased. The pen is inserted into a small niche attached to the keyboard.

Discrete keyboard

Samsung has also made great efforts to create this discrete keyboard. However, when using Samsung Galaxy Book as a laptop, this keyboard does not generate the comfort to work. In a nutshell, the design of this removable keypad does not fit and works well. Samsung wants the keyboard to act as a platform for the tablet.

Performance

Samsung Galaxy Book belongs to the same segment of Microsoft Surface Pro 4 and even Apple iPad Pro. And, the more equipped with modern hardware, the greater the difference. The 7th generation Core, I processor on the Samsung Galaxy Book, is a bit more powerful than the two rivals from Microsoft and Apple and passed the performance test. In the actual use conditions, there is almost no difference.

Samsung Galaxy Book completes simple tasks, including basic photo editing. However, if you perform some tasks that require higher performance, this laptop hybrid tablet sometimes has a slight delay.

Monitor and battery life

The Samsung Galaxy Book’s screen makes it a pleasure to do anything from reading, surfing the Web to the Netflix service experience. Samsung has created a pretty good screen thanks to the technology and expertise available in the manufacture of mobile phones. Though losing to Microsoft Surface Pro 4 on-screen resolution, the Galaxy Book has a full-color display, enhancing the experience of watching videos or playing games.

As a more product-focused performance, we can not expect Samsung Galaxy Book to have great battery life. On the PCMark 8 battery life test, this laptop hybrid tablet reached 3 hours 10 minutes, 5 minutes less than Microsoft Surface Pro 4. And like many other devices, it can achieve an impressive video playback time of 7 hours 32 minutes.

The Samsung Galaxy Book also comes with a built-in rechargeable USB Type C technology that allows full battery charging in less than 3 hours. That is not an impressive number. The charging light is located just below the front camera and lights up in red when plugged in.

Bonus points

Samsung Galaxy Book comes with many accessories, especially keyboards that many competitors in the price range are not integrated. In addition, this 2-in-1 tablet has a very impressive display with a brilliant color display. In addition, it also possesses compact size, is quite thin and lightweight, suitable for moving.

Minus points

While it comes with many accessories but the Samsung Galaxy Book is still inferior to the opponent in a few points. It can use only biometric login through a second device, namely a Samsung smartphone with the Samsung Flow application installed. In contrast, this feature is available on the 2-in-1 tablet from Microsoft. And the last thing we did not like about it was the keypad design that made it feel uncomfortable to work.

Conclude

If you are not a fan of Samsung and do not use other Samsung products, such as smartphones, you will not be attracted to this hybrid laptop if it stands next to competitors at the same price range. It does not feature live biometric logging via infrared cameras such as Microsoft Surface Pro 4.
Anyway, the Samsung Galaxy Book also shows the efforts of the Korean electronics giant to compete with the Microsoft giant. However, the Galaxy Book is not really complete and impressive enough to compete with Microsoft products.
