Design

About the design, The TabPro S looks quite neat and slimmer than some of the same line products with a thin 6.3 mm thickness, weighing about 680 grams, excluding the keyboard. The notable feature in the product design is that it comes with a removable keypad and a protective shell that is quite thin, in harmony with the whole. Thanks to this stand, you can customize it to use a traditional laptop in detachable work when watching movies or playing games.

That is also the advantage of the dock design that will be optimal when used as a tablet when disassembling the keyboard. The size and weight of the device significantly reduced, even equivalent to many tablets the same size of the screen.

Samsung Galaxy TabPro S hardware configuration is based on the Skylake platform with a 3.0-6y30 Core chip with a power consumption of only 4.5W, giving the manufacturer a thinner design and completely removing the fan. Cool in the heat sink to reduce the noise and increase the battery life of the product. However, the limitation of this Core m chip is its relatively low performance due to its limited chip power via TDP control.

Keyboard and touchpad

The product comes with a physical keyboard and a protective shell customized as a traditional laptop or disconnected from the screen when needed. It is interesting to note that the Galaxy TabPro S comes with a keyboard, and you can buy an $ 80 pen stylus, while the Microsoft Surface Pro 4 is the opposite; you have to buy the Type Cover and have a pen available for painting.

TabPro S’s keyboard makes good use of compact space. Except for the relatively small keypad, the rest of the keys are the same size as the standard chiclet keyboard and do not take long to get used. With some function keys, press and hold the Fn key to use.

The actual test shows that the soft keys do not feel good, so it is easy to miss high-speed typing text. Quite normal because the keyboard design is quite thin, resulting in flex; the side keys also sink under the impact when typing.

The touchpad is wide, high sensitivity, and integrates both left and right mouse function keys. That is also a bonus if the product is not considered suitable for finger control because Windows 10 interface and traditional desktop applications are not appropriate. Text editing or precise mouse cursor movement on the touch screen is almost a “nightmare” for many users.

Screen

While supporting the same resolution of 2.160 x 1.440 as the Microsoft Surface Pro 3, the panel technology that Samsung applied on the Galaxy TabPro S completely different; this is also the highlight of the product. Adaptive Display technology automatically adjusts brightness and optimizes image quality according to ambient conditions.

Samsung says using Super AMOLED screen technology helps TabPro S reproduce up to 90% of RGB color, more exact colors than LCD technology. The new tablet is also enhanced with color contrasts, reaching 100,000: 1 for better depth-of-field, darker shades, and gray and white for easy identification.

Color reproduction tests produce good results, sharpness, and depth of image. Especially the black color is impressive when trying to show a film. However, in terms of color saturation, the screen is still slightly too full, so the overall color quality is unnatural, somewhat brighter than the real thing.

Touch screen sensitivity also leaves a good impression. With the classic games Angry Birds and Plants vs. Zombies, the smooth feel of low friction for swiping touches on the screen is more flexible and simple than with a touchpad or mouse.

Performance evaluation

Experiment with the Skylake platform hardware with the M3-6y30 Core, HD Graphics 515 integrated graphics, 4GB RAM, and 128GB SSD interface. Overall, the Galaxy TabPro S performance is only suitable for running office applications, multimedia entertainment, or playing lightweight titles. Of course, this is not a downside of the product because the same Samsung tablet hardware configuration emphasizes flexible mobility and battery life rather than computing power or graphics processing power.

Also, to say more about the Skylake Core m, this is a line of chips designed towards hybrid devices “2 in 1” and a group of large-screen tablet PCs not applicable to personal computers. In the new design, Intel controlled the power consumption (TDP) at 4.5W and even down to 3.5W. The device will have better battery life, quieter and cooler performance, and not require cooling fans in the heat sink.

Specifically, in the PCMark 8 Home test with a 40% reduction in screen brightness (equivalent to battery mode), the battery life is about 6 hours, slightly higher than the HP Elite X2 1020, chip m5-6Y57, HD Graphics 515) and beyond the 4-hour Microsoft Surface Pro 4 (Core i5-6300U, HD Graphics 520).

Note that evaluating the battery of a device generally will largely depend on the tool, and depending on the test scenario, the results will be different. In it, PCMark 8 Home focuses on browsing, data entry, image editing, video chatting, and entertainment gaming to bring the results closer to the reality of home users.

In contrast, in the overall performance evaluation of PCMark 8, the Galaxy TabPro S scored only 2,166 points on the Home test; Lower than the two hybrid models on the same segment.

Like the 3DMark Cloud Gate test, the test configuration scored 2,361 points for Physics, 5,379 for Graphics, and 4,189 for an overall score. With Geekbench 3 testing the processing power, the M3-6y30 Core chip scored 2,416 points for single-unit performance measurement and 4,747 points multi-core performance.
