amazon Sandisk Extreme Portable SSD reviews

Sandisk is a brand too famous for memory cards and USB Flash. Since merging with Western Digital, Sandisk has helped the brand become a major force in the storage industry with its SSDs and paved the way for itself with a new line of high-speed and portable products such as Sandisk is still doing it to this day.

Sandisk Extreme is still an irreplaceable monument for amateur and semi-professional photographers and videographers. Read and write performance is out of the question; importantly, Sandisk Extreme provides extremely high confidence in quality, durability, and overall stability. Perhaps that is also characteristic of this Sandisk Extreme series. It is about the value of memory cards and products with the same quality as the Sandisk Extreme USB Flash and, most recently, the Sandisk Extreme Portable SSD.

As a content creator, I understand the necessity of owning a portable SSD every time I go out to work. Therefore, I have been very interested in portable SSD models that have been released in the past time. In particular, Sandisk – a brand that has been with content creators for a long time, is the name I always expect to bring the best experiences. After closing my eyes for money, I already own a Sandisk Extreme Portable SSD.

The Sandisk Extreme Portable SSD I own here is the second generation of a version of the same name released in 2019. In this second generation, the read and write speed is doubled, which is a step forward for Sandisk to keep up with the changing SSD technology. In 2019, the price of an SSD is still quite expensive, so ordinary users are not very interested in portable SSDs with high capacity, up to 500GB like this. When SSD prices have become more accessible this year, it is too difficult to own a 500GB portable SSD with only around $140.

Going back to the Sandisk Extreme Portable SSD, this SSD is properly designed for the on-the-go. The most noticeable feature is the thinness of the product; with its elongated shape, with a very large and internal hook, users have many ways to carry the product with them without having to put it in a backpack or bag carry the frills out. It’s easy to fit in a pocket or pocket, or you can hook it straight to your keychain. It’s also very space-friendly, like in a laptop’s shockproof bag or a small slot in a camera bag.

The shell of the Sandisk Extreme Portable SSD is a combination of plastic and rubber to balance the weight and shock resistance of the product. The front has a plastic cover with the Sandisk logo; the back and the rest of the sides are covered with rubber which is very smooth to the touch and quite dusty and easy to get dirty and corrupted over time. However, the Sandisk must be easily IP55 water and dust-resistant. Whether you are walking in heavy rain or accidentally spill a glass of water on the table. Sandisk Extreme Portable SSD still ensures high data security for you. Of course, this is not the highest standard of dust resistance, so users can soak the product in water or leave it in the washing machine for hours.

Sandisk uses a USB Type-C port with USB 3.2 gen two connection standard to communicate. This connection standard allows communication bandwidth up to 10gbps, so a promised read / write speed of 1050MB/s and 1000MB/s is possible.

To confirm the accuracy of the product’s performance, I used the following two benchmark software: Crystal Disk Mark and HDTune.

With Crystal Disk Mark, I will see the read and write speed in the most basic state, from sequential read and write to 4k files. Being a portable product for data backup, I will pay more attention to the ability to read and write sequentially.

Of course, the 4k score also matters if you sometimes run apps directly from the portable SSD. As for me, I will install the application on the device to achieve the most stability possible. This SSD is large, but it should only be used for storage when needed; running applications continuously on the SSD is not a very good idea.

Another interesting point in the benchmarking process is that I turned on Crystal Disk Info to read the product’s parameters. It turns out that the “gut” of this Sandisk is similar to the popular WD Blue SN550 NVMe on the market. A pretty good use from the WD house.

In the HDTune test, I want to see the stability in the read and write speeds of the product. Sometimes, there will be large media files that need to be stored, and the stability of the SSD will help me save time when outside.

In the first 50GB, the read/write speed is quite high. After this 50GB, the speed is slow and stable at around 150MB/s until the remaining 450GB of memory capacity. Of course, this phenomenon indicates that the Sandisk Extreme Portable SSD has a cache overflow. Thus, we can see that this is not a portable SSD model that can be used for continuous reading and writing, for example, as a memory for camcorders.

Good performance in the price range and resistance to weather and other unfortunate incidents have convinced me to use the Sandisk Extreme Portable SSD for my daily storage needs for my content creation. $160 is not a big but not a small investment for a secure storage solution. But you’ll soon see its worth when you get to work.

If you want an even better version of Sandisk, you can refer to its Pro version as well. Higher speed and better features are a version for more professionals. As for me, I will still be satisfied with the Sandisk Extreme Portable SSD.
