amazon Sennheiser IE 40 Pro reviews

With the explosion of wireless headphones, perhaps fans of wired headphones are very anxious to wait for new products for themselves. Sennheiser did not let them wait, and announced that it would renew its entire IE Inear-Monitor ear line, with the first product to dock in Vietnam as the Sennheiser IE40 Pro. This product is indeed more interesting than I imagined!

Unboxing

If the box of Swedish sound labels like Urbanista looks youthful, the box of Sennheiser – Germany is much more luxurious (classy). The box is made of cardboard, with three distinctive colors, blue, black and white.

Sennheiser’s slogan for IE40 Pro is ‘Confidence for all stages, for all ears, all the time’, because this is not just a pair of music headsets for ordinary users, but also designed by the company for singers to use on stage.

The headset is placed on a very thick velvet cushion, no different from the previous high-end IE earphones, along with accessories that are placed in a small compartment below.

The IE40 Pro kit is complete, including a squeeze leather case (which I have seen for a long time in a pair of Sennheiser headphones), 3 sets of rubber foam, 1 set of thick sponge foam and make clean accesory.

Design

Giving up the design of the ‘different’ part of the IE60, IE80 or IE80s pairs, Sennheiser used a more traditional design for new product lines, including IE40 Pro. The earpiece is elongated with the ear of the listener, with the warm tube diagonal, this design reminds me of the Shure SE Inear line.

This is an integrated change, because the IE40 Pro is extremely comfortable, because the entire earpiece is in the user’s ear, with no burrs to cause. I used this pair of headphones to sleep, something wireless earphones and Sennheiser’s old IE line couldn’t do.

IE40 Pro also has a color option that is transparent, so that users can see the electronic components inside, but unfortunately the version I have here is solid black so we can’t do that.

The part is removable, using a plug that looks like MMCX but is actually a standard of Sennheiser. This plug may seem looser than MMCX, so use light force that can be removed, so those who invest in the pair of headphones should also be careful not to brace the earpiece too hard, it may not fall. I still can’t understand why Sennheiser doesn’t use the same standards as other brands!

The wire is well designed, thick enough to not give the fragile but light weight feel so as not to put pressure on the user’s ear flaps and create microphonics. The part of the jack is reinforced, L-shaped, so it will definitely last for years.

Another drawback of the IE40 Pro cord, that replacement will definitely solve that is no music control. Using this pair of headphones, want to adjust the volume or the song, I have to get the smartphone out of my pocket. It all takes only a few seconds, but if there are buttons on the cord, it will be much more convenient.

Sound quality

According to rumors on audio forums, Sennheiser’s new IE series (with the word Pro) uses new membranes, and is designed entirely from scratch by engineers different from the other product lines should have new sound quality. I cannot confirm the design of IE40 Pro, but it is absolutely true that it has a new sound quality. Instead of the warm, dark, and somewhat somewhat subdued style of the IE60, IE80, IE40 Pro is brighter, neutral, and as Sennheiser describes it as “Precise”.

The bass is neatly trimmed, with a moderate stop and probably less for Sennheiser fans who are used to the old IE80’s bass style. Less in volume, but the IE40 Pro’s bass is enhanced in control, with each down-beating drum encapsulated at a single point, pressing hard and almost immediately interrupted. The sub-bass segment is not as deep as the IE80, but due to the mid-bass’s ‘back-to-back’ bounce, it never gives off a weak feeling. This is one of the best bass I’ve ever heard in a long time: keeping a bit of Sennheiser ‘s’ quality’ but cutting off the extra parts that make it an ‘adult’ much more.

IE40 Pro’s vocalist is the most lightened ingredient in sound, no longer light, warm and dark like previous products. Without the warmth, Nate Ruess’s voice was from the Fun group. In Some Nights, it is a bit intimate, sweet but clean, strong and seems more detailed. The high-mid part pushed high, but was well controlled, so it never occurred sibalance, even with the ‘super sib’ song like Sound of Yao Si Ting’s silence. I personally like both types of expressions of both old and new IE lines, but Sennheiser’s willingness to change himself is a welcome thing, welcome.

Treble also received the same change as the other two negative bands, though not as much. The amount of treble is good, and the brightness is higher than average so it does not sink in the negative background. But the break speed of the treble is still fast, ‘flashes’ and then interrupts, not keeping the vibration (decay). This is still a good treble, but perhaps it also has a ‘save’ something for the two more advanced pair of headphones, IE400 Pro and IE500 Pro.

One thing that impressed me was the soundstage of IE40 Pro. Milky Chance’s Stolen Dance instruments have a good distance from each other, away from the center of the user’s head. IE40 Pro is similar to all Sennheiser headphones (except the HD800) and does not have an ultra-wide soundstage in the form of ‘show’, but still expresses airy, unobtrusive.

Epilogue

Looking from the outside, Senheiser IE40 Pro is really a pair of boring headphones, no different from previous generation IE ears, no wireless, no water proof, the design is not too different. But the highlight, what makes users impressed right from the try is the new sound quality, neutral and detailed higher than the old generation. This is a ‘gift’ for fans of good quality headphones, especially for those who love Sennheiser products.
