It is a shame that the shmup genre is very attractive but it is picky about the players, especially those who do not have a childhood growing up with it. With old style boldness and high difficulty, the shoot’em up style obviously can not fit casual players. In fact, the number of games of this category is very much in the market, mostly from Japanese developers. But Sine Mora EX is a special case, the remastered version of the Sine Mora game launched in 2012. And more interesting here is the product co-development between the Japanese and Hungarian developers. Creating a unique gameplay and graphics shmup.

For those who do not know, the shmup genre was popular in the 80s, on the box electronics (also called electronic cards / coin due to its nature). This type of game was later transferred to the home console market on NES like Gradius and Konami’s famous Life Force. Its playstyle is quite simple, the player’s “character” is usually a spaceship flying in space, screenplay playing across the screen horizontally or vertically, firing everything up and dodging enemy fireballs from four eight directions. This type of play requires careful, calm and even a lot of luck on the part of the player. Shmup stands for ‘shoot up emoticon’. Japan also calls it danmaku because of the typical Western-style gameplay that is translated as Bullet Hell.

Sine Mora EX is a remastered version of the Sine Mora game, adds 4K graphics support, improves the already beautiful graphics of the old game, adds some new game modes with the English dub. In Latin, Sine Mora means uninterrupted, which is more evident in the game’s extremely fast rhythm, though it’s only half a second after the ship’s body is dissolved. I personally think that Sine Mora EX is not only worth the money for those who love the original version, but also the must-have titles for those who have not experienced Sine Mora before.

As mentioned above, the gameplay of Sine Mora EX is like most games of the same genre. The player will fight the enemy attacks, but with many differences. Developers bring to the game a lot of new ideas, especially when they are not focused on the blood bar as often, but as a timer. To put it simply, you have to kill your enemies to keep the timer from running out of time, because otherwise, your spaceship will explode. The idea of this time is quite interesting, especially as it incorporates in harmony with the plot of the game. To shine brighter, Sine Mora EX also has a factor that slows down time.

You can find this feature in many shooting action games, but I’m sure it’s rare in the shmup genre. In terms of experience, it helps new players get acquainted with the scene from the flight side to easily destroy the spacecraft in the blink of an eye. Thanks to it, you can learn of different types of enemies to strategically evade specific combat. But in return, it makes the game relatively easy for longtime fans of the genre. However, it seems that Sine Mora EX is aimed at new players rather than “elders”. No matter what difficulty you set, Story is much easier than Arcade and Score Attack. The scoring system is simpler than similar titles, and simply not being hit is enough to make the score increase exponentially.

Weapon upgrade system is quite easy to understand and detailed instructions from the beginning of the game. Each time you shoot enemies, they will fall out of the items. It could be a bonus, a bargain that slows down time or increases the number of uses of “destructive weapons”, or merely upgrades the player’s default weapon.

The graphics of Sine Mora EX are very beautiful, much like the Studio Ghibli anime that made me quite impressed. The backgrounds are lively in high detail, from the island-like paradise to the impressive bunkers underground. Light and visual effects are very eye catching in each bullet or blast. Graphical details are also exquisite, as the image of the wind blows flying debris, the bottomless sponges or the green trees dangling through the dense foliage of the ongoing battle. They really create a strong visual effect. However, the background is sometimes quite colorful with the spacecraft of the player, leading to inequality in the experience. I am quite annoyed when the bullets shot from the side of the screen full of you that it is difficult to see the spacecraft in the background. Fortunately, this situation is not frequent but it is also not a problem.

Another issue worth mentioning is the plot of the game. Basically, this is an intriguing story about war and loss, with some science fiction elements. I have never experienced shmup games that have invested in such content. The story is quite engaging but dark, which can make some players dislike it. In contrast, the boss in Sine Mora EX is designed giant, usually about half the screen. They are a combination of creatures in life and creatures are quite creative, but do not create the feeling of “unprecedented” as often seen. This makes me feel a bit sorry for the game, perhaps because of the “friendly” attitude.

Of course, you can change this if you have the confidence to increase the difficulty level. However, then the game may be too hard, even if you have more teammates in your co-op local experience. Unfortunately, Sine Mora EX does not support online play, but this is understandable because the shmup gameplay is completely unsuitable for the online experience due to the high ping problem. Arcade and Versus are quite attractive to those who feel dissatisfied with Story. According to my personal opinion, the story is still interesting, while Arcade and Versus mainly bring the value of play back to the main game.

Finally, Sine Mora EX is exactly one of the best shoot ’em up on the console platform. Although those who look forward to the next part of the game may be disappointed, but obviously the extra content in this EX-series deserves a re-experience from the beginning. This game is not only attractive to those who first experience this genre, but also a must have game with fans of the genre. Not to mention, the soundtrack of the game very great.

Sine Mora EX is released on Windows, Sony PlayStation 4, Microsoft Xbox One and Nintendo Switch. The Sine Mora version was released on Microsoft Xbox 360, Sony PlayStation 3, iOS, Android and Ouya.
