When the flagship Crusher ANC headset was released, the Skullcandy Crusher pair suddenly became obsolete! Besides the old design, this pair of headphones also lacks a chip tile to look for – a feature that any pair of US audio company’s headphones released in 2020 or later will have. That is why Skullcandy announced Crusher Evo, an upgraded version for the regular Crusher line, in 2020 and early 2021.

The packaging of the Crusher Evo is quite similar to the high-end ANC version, with the headset image and some outstanding features printed on the left.

That is the most advertised feature by the company that adjusts the sound quality according to each person’s hearing; we will find it outright below!

If the ANC version has a hard case similar to the Sony WH-1000X pairs, the Crusher Evo comes with a parachute bag, which looks quite ‘quality,’ matching the style of Skullcandy.

This bag has straps linked together by a snap buckle, easy to fold into a motorbike or briefcase.

Other headset accessories include a USB Type-C charging cord and a 3.5mm wire to listen to music with the same color wire as the headset.

And here are our headphones! Unlike the old Crusher version with the cups made quite flat, in the style of the 90’s headphones, the Crusher Evo is a bit ‘bulging,’ quite similar to the Crusher ANC pair. The biggest difference we can see is that Evo is made of matte plastic instead of glossy plastic-like ANC, so it also loses a bit of shine.

ANC does not have a point, but only Evo has on the head cushion, has a large leatherette. This type of design I have never seen in a pair of headphones; looks quite different.

The ear cushions are made of soft leather, the same material as the ANC version! This mattress is thickened, so maybe it will be a bit hot in the summer, but it is not a problem in this season.

In the right ear, we have three buttons to control music, receive calls.

The charging port and wired music port are moved to the left.

Right next to it, we have a power button and a special feature of the Crusher series in general and Crusher Evo in particular: a lever to control the bass volume of the headset. In terms of battery life, Crusher Evo still keeps the 40-hour usage time of the old version, along with the ability to fast charge for users to continue enjoying music without too much interruption quickly.

Unlike small audio companies, when buying products from big brands and including Skullcandy, you will have a better software experience. Things we can do in Skullcandy’s software include searching for headphones by Tile chip (a new feature I also mentioned above), performing audiometry so that the headset adjusts its EQ accordingly with each person, and choose 1 of 3 available EQs. Including music mode for Podcast (increasing the mid part) and movie mode (increasing much bass and soundstage width).

Ok, so what do these headphones sound like? The sound quality of Crusher Evo will be greatly influenced by whether the user adjusts the personal sound quality and where the bass control bar is located. To make the assessment fair, I will turn off the Personal Sound feature because each person will have their own experience but adjust the bass bar at different thresholds.

First of all, we have to confirm that the default sound quality of Crusher Evo is quite V-shape, but there is no need to add bass or treble at all! Even when it is not raised, the amount of bass is already more than one threshold on average; for those who listen to it, that is more than enough. In Alan Walker’s Unity song, the bass emerges very clearly, round and almost right next to the listener’s ear.

When trying to adjust the bass bar, I found that this bar is very sensitive, and just pulling up a little bit, the bass is much more explosive. For example, when dragging this bar only 1/3 of its way, the sub-bass part has emerged from 4/10 of the default up to 7/10, creating an extremely explosive atmosphere, accompanied by headphones and vibrating every bass beat! I also like the bass but not to the extent that I need it to be so strong, so in most cases, increase the bass a little bit or leave it at the default level. Particularly, bass-heads will love this feature, but I must also recommend that the control bar is quite sensitive; adjust it slowly if you don’t want to be ‘startled by the bass’!

The Crusher Evo’s midrange has a lot to say, but to summarize, this is a midrange made for playing vibrant music, not slow, gentle songs. The singer’s voice is slightly back, especially the low-mid and mid part to leave the stage closest to the listener for the bass (especially when the user increases the bass with the lever), and the high-mid is pushed higher than average. This way of playing helps the singer’s voice through Crusher Evo’s performance with an electronic touch, which is very suitable for Pop, Dance, EDM music… Like The Fat Rat’s Fly Away, bright female vocalist Anjulie, sharp, a bit unnatural, but that’s the composer’s intention.

Like the high-mid part, the treble also has high brightness to complete the Crusher Evo’s V-shape sound quality. In certain songs with many S or SH sounds, sibilance can occur, so if you are sensitive to this tonal range, you can use EQ to calm it down. On the contrary, in most cases, having a high treble sound with a slightly sharp edge helps Crusher Evo have a more dynamic overall sound quality, with a strong contrast to the bass at the bottom.

The True Heir of Crusher ANC

Crusher Evo can both be considered an upgraded version of the previous Skullcandy Crusher headset but can also be considered an updated version so that the Crusher line can keep up with the flagship Crusher ANC. The choice between Crusher Evo and Crusher ANC is now separated by active noise cancellation; users are now much easier to decide!
