Taking active noise cancellation technology ANC as the initiative, Skullcandy Hesh ANC can win users’ hearts by doing well enough in all aspects, not feeling deprived.
Active noise cancellation technology is no longer a “luxury” thing, appearing only in the most expensive pairs of headphones on the market. There are pairs of In-ear headphones under the price range of $90, like EarFun Free Pro, that already own this feature! Skullcandy also follows this trend and equips ANC for low / mid-range headphones so that everyone can experience it, including the Hesh ANC pair that we will learn about today.
The tagline of this pair of headphones is “Wireless simplicity with noise cancellation,” which seems to describe it most accurately: a pair of headphones aimed at simplicity with ANC technology.
Like other Skullcandy 2021 headsets, the Hesh ANC box has pretty decorative motifs with its logo repeated like this.
The headset’s accessory set includes a charging cord, 3.5mm music cord, and a canvas bag. The charging cord is black, but the 3.5mm cord is white to match the color of the headset, perhaps because this is what people will bring to the street to use; the charging cord is only used when the battery runs out!
Unlike cheap headphones on the market, Hesh ANC comes with a bag that is also quite “quality.” The inside of the bag is covered with thick velvet to prevent the headset from being scratched, with small compartments to put accessories to carry everywhere.
The Hesh series has kept the same design and is quite minimalist, with the exterior also flattened rather than the multi-layered cuts like the Crusher line. Depending on the eye, it will say whether this is a good or bad design, but one thing is for sure, it will not be as eye-catching as the Crusher line.
A small minus point of the Hesh ANC line is that there are not many color options, with the only two colors being black and white with the orange pad that we have here. Like the Hesh 3 Wireless pair, we have more red and blue camouflage, looking more aggressive than these two basic colors.
In return, what Skullcandy did well with the ANC is its build quality. The headset is still made of plastic, but with a metal frame and more precise fabrication, the headset feels very solid in hand.
Details such as the earpads and head cushions are made quite thick, with the outer part being covered with very soft leather. That isn’t the most premium leather I’ve ever seen on a pair of headphones. Still, it’s been a huge upgrade on some of Skullcandy’s older generation headphones when the wrap is as thin as paper, only Only used for a short time; it will peel off each piece and look very unsightly.
The button system of the headset is made of soft rubber, with two buttons to control the volume, change songs, the main control button to turn off the power, receive calls, stop playing music, and one more button to take care of the task. Turn off active noise cancellation, turn on crosstalk and hold down to enter pairing mode.
Right next to this button are 2 USB C and 3.5mm charging ports for listening to wired music. The duration of this pair of headphones is 22 hours and can quickly charge 10 minutes for 3 hours of use, so the fact that you have to use up to 3.5mm is only for rare cases that have not found a charging place.
The feature that those who invest money in this pair of headphones will look forward to the most will be ANC active noise cancellation, so does this feature work effectively. To make it easy for everyone to imagine, the noise resistance of Hesh ANC will achieve a score of 7 – 7.5 / 10 if compared to its flagship product, Crusher ANC, which is good enough, but if compared, you will notice the difference.
The difference lies in the fact that the Crusher ANC can block out human voices quite effectively, and this pair of headphones will also block some unexpected noises. Hesh ANC can “soften” all the surrounding sounds, but it will not block effectively if they are loud enough or happen suddenly.
In addition to adding active noise cancellation, Hesh ANC retains the same sound quality that has made the Hesh line famous: V-Shape. If you are a person who likes to listen to vibrant music, want to have explosive bass and treble so that every song “dances” straight in front of you and makes you want to dance, the Hesh ANC is the pair of headphones for you.
There is no ability to adjust the bass with a slider like the Crusher ANC pair, but the Hesh ANC has been adjusted to a decent bass level, at least for bass heads. The bass is quite redundant, deep down, and has a good vibration. The early drums of Bad Apple by RichaadEB, Cristina Vee have great force; you can feel them as physical, not just sound. Skullcandy’s recent pairs of headphones have had a temper in bass reproduction but certainly still do not disappoint strong music listeners!
The weak point in the sound quality of this pair of headphones lies in the mid-range. Skullcandy recently moved to a more mixed sound, with a more natural mid-section, but Hesh ANC has a stronger V-shape sound quality than other options of the same brand, so this part is also affected. The vocalist’s voice, especially female singers like Diana Krall in the song Moonglow, is somewhat thin and backward, standing level with the bass, not forward. With Pop and Dance songs, the mid will still meet, but this will not be the first choice for those who listen to Ballad and Jazz music!
To perfect the V-shape sound, Hesh ANC pushes the volume up again when it comes to the treble. Although I like a natural treble, I have to appreciate the Hesh ANC when it comes to electronic trebles. The brightness of this tonal range is pushed high; there is a slight peak to create a highlight to help make an impression on the listener. Those who are not familiar with it may say that this treble is a bit dazzling, but this is the V-shape treble that makes dance songs fast, not annoying.
Just enough to use
With the price being only half that of the flagship Crusher ANC pair of the same company, the Skullcandy Hesh ANC, of course, must have cutbacks. The headset has a less eye-catching design, cannot change the sound quality with an on-ear slider, active noise cancellation is in the mid-range, and the sound quality also has some minor flaws. On the contrary, it has done well enough for all that the user needs, particularly providing an extremely “already” sound V-shape, making an impression right from the first listen.
