The world of technology often has a rule: successive products will be better quality than previous models, with a constant price – from which users will have two options: one is still good but cheaper, one top of the table but will be more expensive. But the Skullcandy Jib + product broke this rule.

Open the box / Design

Jib +’s box is small, neat, and has a mysterious black color – as opposed to the red of the version we open today.

In the box we have headphones, rubber cushions – very special because they are made the same color as the headset and the micro USB charging cord. Some high-end headphones have switched to USB Type-C, but with a pair of low-end headphones like Jib +, maybe we can ignore it.

The first version of Jib has a slightly ‘weird’ design, with a cord between the ears and a battery holder located in the middle of the wire. This design makes the headset unbalanced, which can fall off if not placed properly. Jib + has switched to a necklace design, it is comfortable to wear and it is much harder to fall.

At low prices, there are quite a lot of features, so Jib + also has to cut a bit in the finishing part. The headset is made entirely of plastic, and if you look closely you can still see the connections. But if users use it carefully, then durability will probably not be a big problem.

The wearing of the ear is made simple, with the accent being the ear cushions that were not available in previous versions. This detail is not too necessary, because ordinary Jib + is already quite close.

There are 2 parts on the necklace, one for placing the battery with the control buttons and the charging port (behind the rubber door). The buttons of Jib + are made large, have a high response, so they like it extremely well, surpassing other high-end products of other brands.

Practical experience

Before going to sound quality, we will discuss some other auxiliary issues. Jib + battery life is about 6 hours, similar to its predecessor. This is a good amount of time, but to be honest, it is lower than the new generation of wireless headsets. But once again, it must be repeated: this is a low-cost product, so we can completely ignore.

The headset has switched to using the latest Bluetooth 5.0 standard instead of 4.2 as the old version, a great upgrade. Bluetooth 5.0 not only has the ability to stay connected to the source better than the old standards, but also has a much lower latency, almost equal to the pair of wired headphones. Users will certainly be satisfied when using Jib + to watch movies, play smartphone games that support Bluetooth 5.0.

Skullcandy has recently perfected its style, no longer having each pair of headphones as before (and often having many bugs that make it hard to hear). Jib + belongs to the new generation of headphones, so it also enjoys this sound pattern: strong, strong bass but not ‘destroy’ completely the remaining 2 sound bands.

Jib + bass is really impressive, users will be surprised by what a pair of small headphones like this can do. The amount of bass is extremely abundant, especially not only focusing on the mid bass, but also being able to get down to the deep sub bass frequencies. Sub bass flooded the background, giving Jib + a somewhat dark, harsh and powerful sound. Mid bass is not strictly controlled, so it will pull the tail and please even the most difficult bass-heads.

The mid-quality of Skullcandy is better than the previous 50/50 or Titan, so even after being brought back, it is still quite good for a pair of bass-specialized headphones. The main vocalist of Blue Traveler is bold, accented, not flat like a paper. The high-mid section is just right, no sibling, no glare, no complaint. For those who prefer mid cleaner, more suitable for listening to Jazz, Vocal than Dance and Pop, you can choose SoundMAGIC E11BT.

The treble, though not completely lost like the first generation headphones of the company, but of course is not the strongest band of these headphones. Treble does appear, but just barely to be able to sound not too harsh, but with a pair of low-end headphones, directed entirely to those who listen to bass music, that’s probably enough.

Epilogue

Skullcandy Jib + is a special pair of headphones, although priced lower than its predecessor, but is a pair of headphones with many upgrades. This is an option that is hard to ignore at a low price, especially for bass-heads who love the sound of Skullcandy.
