Sonos is an audio brand that is always remembered by users with products with good sound quality and high-end convenience; most noticeable is the ability to set up multi-room, which can be the simplest compared to competitors’ current players. The first is that the $200 price tag isn’t too high, but it’s still heavily contested by the Echo ($100), a speaker introduced with increasingly improved features (how much is unknown). At a glance, Sonos One looks more luxurious and prominent than Play: 1, owns a touch control keyboard instead of physical keys as in the previous product design, similar to 2 expensive speaker products rather than Play:5 and Playbase. The microphone trigger key is located on the Play/Pause key to enable/disable 6 FF (Far-Field) microphones with subtle LED ring indication. When the microphone is off, the speaker will work normally but will not respond to Alexa commands.

On the back of Sonos One, there is no screw hole, so it will be a bit more difficult if users want to mount it on the wall, but with 2 Sonos One speakers, users can connect them to their own larger sound space. Sonos One and Play:1 are also incompatible, even though they look very similar. The Sonos One speaker is also very moisture-resistant so that it can be used even in the bathroom, but it is not to the extent of “storm protection,” so Sonos does not recommend installing the speaker outdoors.

Setting up Sonos One is generally quite quick but still requires a bit of basic understanding. Playing music from the Sonos app in reverse is extremely easy and fast. When placed in the kitchen, if the Echo Dot does a good job of transmitting recipe conversations, the Sonos One stands out with great sound quality, giving users the experience of favorite music when eating breakfast or dinners. Sonos One’s Alexa also performs very well with SmartHome commands, although there are still some confusing errors from time to time.

Setting up Sonos One causes many non-experts with confusing steps, including setting up the sound system. Adding devices to the system, syncing music services with Sonos, connecting speakers to Alexa Account, syncing music services with Alexa, finally letting Alexa search for SmartHome devices. Of course, users will never have to touch it again once it’s set up, but it’s an easy barrier to make them hesitate.

After all the above steps, users will enjoy the great sound quality of Sonos One. The speaker’s sound quality has very good detail, plus the fullness is rarely found in a speaker of only medium size. The Sonos One should be a pretty good starting option for almost everyone. The Sonos One 2-speaker system is even better, giving sound quality close to the Play: 5 at a much cheaper price. The speaker’s microphone is also very sensitive (but not as good as the Echo Dot), hearing commands to activate Alexa even when playing music at high volume. When it recognizes the Alexa activation command, the Sonos One will play a short tone and begin listening to the command, reducing the music playback volume to the appropriate level.

Users can command Sonos One to easily play music on older Sonos speaker devices with a multi-room setup. Alexa also knows how to announce itself as playing music from a radio station with a clear name but lacks information from which service (like Pandora or Amazon, for example). Some Alexa features are also not compatible with Sonos One, specifically Echo-exclusive features.
