Design

As the upgrade version of the XB50AP, the XB55AP is designed quite similar to the predecessor. The outer surface of the headphone has a metal layer, decorated with concentric circles. Plastic housing, with the driver placed near the ear and the bulge out to look quite strange. The details in this section are made more sophisticated, look better than the old version.

On the wire there is a small microphone along with a control knob equivalent to the middle button.

Wire is made with small grooves to prevent dirt as well as to avoid tangling while in the bag.

Jack is L-shaped and adds reinforcement to prevent folding.

In addition to gray, the headset has a wide selection of colors such as green, blue, orange and white. Users can choose the right way to mix their clothes. This is a product aimed at young people, so having different colors is a great advantage.

Sound

SONY MDR XB50AP is a well known product that is well received and used by many people in Asia, so the new version does not adjust too much sound, just add a little to complete. First of all, the background sound is a bit brighter, just a bit to make it clean in light tracks, but overall the sound is still dark.

The highlight of the headphones is of course the bass. The bass is made much, “extra” according to the promise of the company. This continues to be one of the earphones of the range 50$. The sub bass deep down, giving a very resonant sound. This seems to be bleed over the XB50AP, the background of the XB55AP seems to be less defensive. The mid bass is also much more than the sub bass. Mid bass is very round, floating and gives a very heavy punchy feel. Trying on Amber Rubarth’s Light, the drums are very tight, yet well controlled enough not to overflow the vocalist. This is a very personal bass and not lacking in volume, the basshead and especially the bass of the Sony eXtra bass will not disappoint with the XB55AP.

Focusing on the bass so mid of the ear is also a bit light. Mid does not move forward but takes a step back. This part is slightly resonant, so the voice is somewhat airy and not sure, heard a bit of ATH substance, maybe the Japanese firms as earphones also have “learning” of each other. This medium is generally quite audible, not too bold or too thin, slightly sweet but not too fancy. The interesting point in mid of XB55AP is that the high portion has a small peak so there is a bit of sibalance. This range of sibalance is not loud enough to cause jarring, but it’s still enough to make pop songs a bit personal. Try with Maroon 5’s Payphone, the main vocalist because of this little sib that is better than the soundtrack. This lightweight sib is also acceptable, making this pair of earphones a mess, not too bad to play Ballad, Jazz. Of course there will still be mid-range earphones, but remember that the XB55AP is an eXtra bass.

The treble of the headset can be called just enough, as well as the XB50AP because the main purpose of the headphones is to click on the bass. Bass has enough volume, but the phenomenon of roll off a bit early so not sharp as some other lines in the price under $50. This treble is of course enough to avoid interfering with sound, but it is hard to please the treble-head.
