Design

Sony Xperia J is one of the four smartphones introduced by Sony at the IFA 2012 exhibition. Compared to the Sony Xperia TX or Sony Xperia T and Sony Xperia V, Sony Xperia J has the simplest design but still carry the style of the Xperia 2012. The flat front with rectangular corners creates a feeling of strong and personality.

Sony also uses full touch keys, located just below the screen, without the need for hard keys or virtual keys like T and TX. The bottom of the diagonal screen makes the Motorola MileStone look great. A little interesting is that at the edge just below the keypad of the J also has a small LED, which can change the color according to the tone of the Theme.

The Sony mid-range smartphone inherits a lot of the Sony Ericsson Xperia Arc and Sony Ericsson Arc S models (before becoming Sony) with a curved back cover in the center, a high head and tail. This design helps the user to hold the machine comfortable, sure and not fatigue when used for a long time.

However, compared to previous models, the Xperia J feels better grip due to the body thicker, 9.2 mm. Weight is also heavier than the Arc S about 7 grams which makes the product quite “good”, although the case is made mainly from plastic. The Xperia J is less sexy than the Arc and Arc S models.

Simple dorsal fin with details like camera, flash and a small speakerphone near the tail. Sony’s distinctive blue logo disappears and only the Xperia line is left. The Xperia J has a smooth, glossy finish with 4 different colors: black, white, bronze and pink, suitable for both women and men.

The point on the Xperia J is that the hard keys on the edge of the machine are designed to be thin and small, making it difficult for users to press and control. Increasing or decreasing the volume, or turn off the screen is inconvenient, take more force to click and also easy to confuse. J is also Sony’s rare smartphone that does not have a hard disk to take pictures of, replacing it with a slot to unfasten the back cover.

Unlike Sony Xperia P or Sony Xperia S, J can easily remove the plastic back cover to replace the battery. The standard SIM card slot and memory card slot are all located next to the battery. But to disassemble, users still need to shutdown and remove the battery.

Screen

Coming to the Xperia J deficiencies before it comes to the advantage. The midrange Android from Sony uses a 16 million color TFT LCD screen instead of an LED backlight LCD, and the Mobile Bravia Engine does not appear. In addition, the camera does not have a light sensor to automatically adjust the screen brightness, and instead only turn off the screen when the user put on the ear and talk.

While the advantages of J’s display are its ability to reproduce relatively good images, true colors with high contrast, bright outdoor visibility. The 480 x 854 pixel resolution combined with the 4 inch screen also makes the J look pretty sharp, though not as impressive as the Sony Xperia S or Sony Xperia P. For a touchscreen phone running Android at a range of $300 to $800 (genuine), image quality on the Sony Xperia J is acceptable.

One point to notice is that J’s screen is not attached to a protective layer like most of Sony’s Xperia touch phones. If necessary, users will have to manually glue or not, but may limit some scratches due to Corning Gorilla Glass.

Function

The Android 4.0 OS and the TimeScape UI interface that Sony provides for the Xperia J are well equipped, giving users the best features and utilities on Android. Sony’s interface also integrates deeply into social networks, linking to many online services from music, movies to online storage. Sony’s TimeScape is also appreciated for its beautiful design, sophistication and not too fancy. Virtual keyboard makes good input.

However, the use of Android 4.0 operating system on the configuration is not too strong (single core chip) and 512 MB RAM of Xperia J makes the system operation is not really smooth. Even in the swipe of the home screen, accessing the app menu occasionally shows jerky and hysteresis.

TimeScape UI on Sony’s new version is refreshed in the image management interface, music player (Walkman) and integrated video player application separately. All are positive improvements. Browse photos on the J with the track-based time. Walkman music management software, good music arrangement, nice graphics and many built-in features that support the sound adjustment.

Xperia J does not handle video formats such as DivX or Xvid, but only supports MP4 and 3GP.

No longer is the 8 megapixel camera like the Sony Ericsson Xperia Arc S or Sony Xperia U, the Xperia J is truncated with a 5 megapixel camera. There is no Sweep 3D feature but the camera on J still retains many similarities with other Xperia smartphones, from the interface to being able to customize many parameters. Users can still take pictures with Face Detection, Panorama or VGA camera on the front.

The image quality from J’s main camera is good when displaying details and colors well in close-up shots. However, in landscape mode with wide viewing angle, the color and sharpness of the image is not very good. Unfortunately, the Xperia J is only capable of supporting VGA video without HD 720p, just like the LG Optimus L7.

Performance and battery life

The Sony Xperia J is equipped with a single-core, Qualcomm MSM7227A, 1 GHz processor and ARM Cortex-A5, 512 MB RAM and Adreno 200 GPU. This configuration is “weak” compared to competitors like L9 or Galaxy S Advance, HTC Desire X.

Actually, the configuration of the Xperia J has been quite hard to bear the Android 4.0 operating system interface TimeScape, causing the machine sometimes encountered the phenomenon of jerky, delay in the touch operation. This configuration also makes Xperia J difficult to play HD video on mobile, as well as many new titles with 3D graphics.

The Xperia J test showed that the Xperia J scored 1,299 points in the Quadrant Benchmark Standard test suite, not only inferior to its rivals in the segment but lower than its predecessors like Desire HD, Nexus S or even Similarly, Xperia J’s Antutu Benchmark scores just 3,127 points and Nenamark 2 GPU performance scores of 19.2 frames per second, all showing the configuration limitations of J.

Xperia J is the smartphone with the best battery life when compared with the HTC Desire X, LG Optimus L7, LG Optimus L9 or  Samsung Galaxy S Advance. The mid-range Android 4.0 with 1.750 mAh battery can work well with 2 days of continuous use, using regular Wi-Fi or 3G connections.
