amazon The Order 1886 reviews
The Order: 1886 – Ready at Dawn after more than 10 years of establishment and development, is still considered the “falling child” of Sony, when all four of their previous titles for Sony were just externalities (spin-off) of the famous game series (Jak & Daxter, God of War), though it was also quite successful.
But the history of this developer may turn to a new page thanks to The Order: 1886 – their first PS4 exclusive, and a potential project when planned for development since 2010.
So, can The Order: 1886 help Ready at Dawn achieve the desired success?
The Order: 1886 is probably one of the products that can blur the lines between two genres of art: movie and game because this game has been carefully built in terms of scenario, speed of progress, lighting, dialogue, angle, as well as reasonable cutscenes.
The developer even makes use of a lot of contextual action (QTE-Quick Time Event) or puts two black bars on top and bottom to make it look like a widescreen movie (similar to Beyond: Two Souls. , The Evil Within), although these are things few gamers like.
The plot of The Order: 1886 tells the story of a fantasy period based on the Victorian period in England in 1886, where the Knights of the Round Table must fight against the Half-Breeds like werewolves, vampires.
But behind this war are the tricks of the corrupt government apparatus, as well as the betrayal of the people in the Association.
In general, the script of The Order: 1886, although nothing too special and predictable, the details are reasonably built like an action movie, at times opening and closing, always making players pay attention to keep track until the end.
The Order: 1886 also perfectly reproduces the 19th-century Victorian atmosphere through gothic architectural buildings, or balloons flying in the sky.
Players also find it interesting to be able to meet many “celebrities” in another dimension such as Knights of the Round Table, physicist Nikola Tesla (and his feud with Thomas Edison), or butcher murderer Jack the Ripper – who is responsible for the massacres at Whitechapel.
Most real events or contexts in history at this period are skillfully reproduced.
Besides, The Order: 1886 has many scenes related to many famous movies, such as the scene where Sir Galahad goes mad at the enemy and screams “Where is she?” This reminds me of the scene where Batman interrogates the Joker in The Dark Knight.
The Order: 1886 has such success thanks to the extremely impressive graphics quality, as this can be considered as the best game on PS4 at the moment.
The surroundings or emotions on the character’s facial expressions are also shown in a very real way.
The music also shows its role well, with excellent performances of voice actors, or impressive soundtracks, suitable for the context of composer Jason Graves (who composed the series game Dead Space, Tomb Raider, Might & Magic).
The Order: 1886 may receive many awards for the game, but it will certainly be the type of award “honoring beauty”, through impressive visual-visual displays.
As for the gameplay – which has always made its mark, lasting over time for a series of games – is unfortunately not taken care of like that.
Is this the “weakness” of Ready at Dawn when they are unable to create a gameplay feature in their products because the company’s previous titles are now all exceptions of the game series popular?
Over 17 chapters, players are mainly “classified” into two “scenarios”: heavy weapon combat, or stealth action.
No matter the scene, the player will always feel uncomfortable by the constraint and coercion of The Order: 1886.
The most obvious proof is that the cover-shoot system in The Order: 1886, though present, is not as effective as games in the same genre, because the player cannot quickly change.
In particular, in some scenes, The Order: 1886 also deprived the whole system above, even though in front of many enemies, just because the script … did not allow.
As a result, the player had to hide and “run” by himself, because of the massive firepower.
Besides, the sneak action sequence is not much to satisfy players, and like other scenes, are a completely “limited” scenario.
Want to draw weapons, shoot, or sneak out the finish, … all will have to be in a predetermined scenario.
This restriction has made The Order: 1886 lose its diversity in gameplay quite a bit.
Not only does the player inhibit the gameplay, The Order: 1886 also makes them more frustrated when possessing AI (artificial intelligence) extremely lacking “attractive”, whether it is an enemy or a teammate.
Even most of them are still standing in a fixed position and indifferent, like “encouragement” the player to aim.
Fighting the Half-Breeds wasn’t much better either, as they would always attack in a predetermined path, then return to the lid, and repeat this until they were defeated.
Tactics like this are too out of date and predictable, and invisible in general takes the unexpected challenge.
With enemy AI so bad, don’t expect anything from team AI.
Most of the time, the player will always have a strong sidekick “Knight”.
However, even with such a noble title, they wouldn’t be of much help because their shooting skill was so “weak”, even though all the enemy’s firepower was focused on the player’s side.
QTE (action context) is what makes many gamers “hate” because many developers have overused it, such as in the RYSE game.
The number of times QTE in The Order: 1886 was not too much, but the way it presented was just too disappointing!
Most of the QTE will serve the purpose of moving, or finishing moves, with simple touches.
And the scenes with the most QTE happened to the Half-Breed boss fights (also not worth calling the boss, because they were just a little more “strong”).
But what the player has is just that: press the button to attack, then dodge, and repeat boringly until the end.
And whether the player presses correctly or not, the stages using this QTE hardly differ too much from the scenario, so at the end of the game, the player just tries to do “give it”, not mind. Find out if anything has changed.
So do not expect that The Order: 1886 will reach near the “level” of Heavy Rain.
With that said, The Order: 1886 is like a movie, and in fact, it’s like the movies: no one is bothered to watch something they already know very well, except of course electric super products film- something this game did not achieve.
On average at the highest difficulty, the player will take about 7 hours to complete The Order: 1886.
And then, The Order: 1886 had absolutely no reason to hold on, unless they wanted to find all the material like articles, recordings, to complete the trophy.
This also does not take much time, because getting Platinum (100% trophy) for The Order: 1886 is also much simpler than the game of the same genre.
The Order: 1886 has absolutely no other games, including popular items such as co-op, multiplayer, or the challenge of player talent, and has nothing to explore.
Therefore, once the story has been completed, the player can safely say “goodbye” without “regret”.
