amazon The Surge reviews

The original plot shows that the earth has run out of resources because of the war and the consequences of climate change. The Surge opens with Warren on his first day at CREO. This is a corporation applying advanced scientific technology to bring ordinary life to people with disabilities. After the “connection” to the exoskeleton system full of pain and gore, a sudden burst occurs, causing everything to change 180 degrees. The human-machine now suddenly turned to find ways to destroy the player. Warren became the target of “disappearance” of the entire “factory” staff of the CREO Group. Your mission is to survive to find out what’s going on here.

Featuring a lot of learning from the Souls, the Surge also uses a third view. However, the first issue that annoyed me at the beginning of the game was the camera angle that followed the character was quite enthusiastic. Besides, there are lots of blue lights blinking in the game very sore eyes. They combine to make me dizzy when experiencing. This is the first third-person shooter game that made me feel a headache for a long time.

Initially, the game allows you to choose between two classes of characters, one with low-level but agile weaponry and the rest is armed with high-damage weapon but slow attack. However, this option is almost a little more color for there is not much meaning. Later on, The Surge allows the player a lot of customization and upgrading, so initially choosing only a little advantage, depending on the style of each player. In fact, players can use any kind of weapons, erasing the role of the character class in the game. I personally find this option quite redundant.

Similar to Bonfire in the Souls, The Surge uses Med Bay as the center for character upgrades. Tech Scrap players pick up when they destroy the enemy as a “currency” for most upgrades. Character leveling corresponds to upgrading the Power Core, allowing you to attach many skills and open doors that require higher levels. Meanwhile, the remaining skills revolve around upgrades the Health, Defense and Power for the character. In general, the role-playing element does not place basic parameters on the characters. Instead, the ability to customize the new character is the attraction of The Surge.

Players can collect a lot of enemy machine parts. Even if you pick up new weapons or armor from enemies, the game will provide a schematic for you to map. This design contributes to encourage players to kill as many enemies to earn good, “play” Tech Scrap to prepare, upgrade the character more powerful. However, it is not easy to “play” Tech Scrap in The Surge. Enemies in the game play very bad, but slowly, but sometimes they suddenly jump into you from afar, hit you with a few not missed, the red “No Vital Signs” appears on the screen. We are even more mischievous, often fighting when you are battling another, playing a remote attack from the far corner of the camera. I usually die the most in this case.

Death of Warren character in The Surge also has the same cruel consequences. If you die in the middle of a game, everything you earn will stay where you are. The character will revive in Med Bay and have a timer appear on the screen. If you do not have time to go back to get out before the time is over, or bad luck to die again before returning to the old position, all the “owner” will disappear, you lose all work out. The problem is, when you resurrected, all of your enemies are reborn in the same place, waiting for you to die again. And the results are still the same, leaving you with the initial effort, in the least. The game even encourages players to restrict Med Bay to “store” items, by increasing the dropping rate or Tech Scrap higher when you play the game and limiting back to Med Bay for the longest time.

Punish such grim players, but the combat system of the game is not as impressive as expected. The melee combat style of the game is rather slow, not fast and less flexible. In this respect it makes the battle lose the tactics of role-playing action games. Even the battle with giant robot bosses is not much different in tactics. Most are repetitive and this is really a point that I regret for the game. Feeling like a lack of money developers should not be so. However, the point of commendation is the improved combat against the Souls, which allows you to target the body parts of the enemy. In particular, the difference in body parts is also a way for players to upgrade the character.

I take this example. For example, you see the enemy holding a good weapon and want to have it. You can attack until the power bar reaches the maximum level, which will signal the execution of the finishing blow. Perfectly done, Warren will tear down the arm of the enemy for you to bring back to the fabricator to use. Similarly, if the enemy has a good armor, the “splitting” of their armor will fall on the schematic used to make that armor.

Also learn the Souls series, the screenplay in The Surge is no different than the maze. They contain intermittent shortcuts, countless enemies are always waiting to jump on you, and more and more objects mystery somewhere. These factors will probably delight players interested in exploring. However, other things like music, sound, boss design or even voice acting make sense without the proper investment. The soundtrack, for example, feels like the developer has only played a few audio files for all enemies in the game. Other factors are similar, which makes me inevitably feel the game does not cost enough to invest properly, forced to spend many steps to reduce costs.

If you ignore the influences of the Souls series, the Surge is a real hit. High character customization is another plus point to attract players, but high difficulty is the corresponding deduction point. On the surface of experience, although the scene has changed, but the game has been successful in creating a sense of familiarity with the fans of the Souls. To me, this is also the success of The Surge when escaping the clone shadow of the Souls. The game is released on PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC.
