It’s a bit pricey at $399.99 even for a WiFi 6 router, but that money puts you in complete control of your gaming bandwidth. It also allows you to see real-time latency and resource usage so you can keep your network running at peak speeds. The AX11000 not only delivers excellent transfer rates and fast file transfer times in the test, but it also comes with powerful parental controls, a lifetime anti-malware subscription, and acceleration utility games, all integrated into a gamer-friendly console.

Design and Features

With a black textured cabinet and red accented antenna, the AX11000 has the Gaming Router written on it. At 7.2 x 11.3 x 11.3 inches (HWD), it is larger than the Asus RT-AC5300 Gaming Router (2.6 x 9.6 x 9.6 inches). It has eight detachable high-performance antennas and an LED indicator that glows uniformly white when everything is working properly. When the Router loses internet connection, it glows solid red and glows in solid orange when WiFi is turned off.

The rear panel is home to plenty of I/O ports. Here you’ll find eight gigabit LAN ports, one 2.5Gb WAN port, a reset button, the power jack, and the power switch. The right side of the Router has a USB 3.0 Type-A port and a USB 3.0 Type-C port. Under the hood are a 1.8GHz quad-core processor, 1 gigabyte (GB) of RAM, and 512 megabytes (MB) of flash memory. The AX11000 is a 12-stream tri-band router capable (theoretical) data rates of up to 1,148 megabits per second (Mbps) on the 2.4 GHz band and up to 4,804 Mbps on each of the 5 GHz bands. The AX11000 can be controlled using TP-Link’s Tether mobile app or a web-based console, but the web console offers more control than the mobile app and includes a Game Center console. The panel opens to the Home screen with buttons and the Network Map, Game Center, Internet, Wireless, and Advanced labeled top. There is also a network map showing how many clients are connected. Below the map is a table showing detailed information about your Internet (IP and MAC addresses, connection type). Another panel has a SpeedTest meter that shows your Internet upload and download speeds.

The Game Center button takes you to a dashboard loaded with tools to help you keep your network running. It has a Network Traffic panel that shows real-time upload and download activity, a Performance panel that shows real-time CPU and memory usage, and a USB panel that shows you the status of connected drives. Below these three tables is a larger Device Priority table with the names of all connected devices and their real-time data rates. Use this panel to prioritize device bandwidth with the touch of a button.

On the left side of the screen is a menu that includes tabs for Game Accelerator, Game Protector, Smart Game Assistant, and Game Diagnostics. The Game Accelerator option allows you to reduce latency and increase overall game speed for any client you choose. The Game Protector option is where you go to configure anti-malware and control. These are the same Trend Micro-powered controls that come with TP-Link’s Archer AX6000 Router and offer age-specific website filters and lifetime protection against viruses, attacks, and other types of attacks, phishing, ransomware, and other malicious content. The Internet button takes you to a screen where you can configure the Internet Type and MAC Clone settings. The Advanced button takes you to a screen where you can adjust advanced wireless and LAN settings and configure things like firewalls, Network Address Translation (NAT) forwarding, and access control. That is also where you can access the Administrator settings to view system logs and firmware updates.

Settings and Performance

The TP-Link Archer AX11000 is fairly easy to set up using the Tether mobile app or its web interface. Both methods are quick and painless. We connected the Router to the modem and then to our test workstation, started it up, and entered http://tplinkwifi.net into the URL bar of our web browser. We then create an admin password, set the time zone, choose a dynamic IP for our connection type, and personalize each band. As a final step, we ran a connection test, upgraded the firmware, created a TP-Link Cloud account, and the installation was complete.

The AX11000 earned high marks in our transfer speed tests. It scored 133 Mbps on the 2.4GHz proximity test (same room), faster than the Linksys MR9600 and Netgear Nighthawk AX12 RAX120.

It showed good range performance with a lead score of 67 Mbps on the 30-foot test.

Performance on the 5GHz band is also very good. The AX11000’s score of 831 Mbps on the distance test. At 30 feet, the AX11000’s 328 Mbps score was faster than the MR9600 and RT-AX88U but couldn’t keep up with the RAX120, which led to a score of 417 Mbps.

We measured file transfer performance by moving a 1.5 GB folder of photos, videos, music, and document files between a USB 3.0 drive connected to the Router and a computer to test the speed. The AX11000’w’s score of 68 MBps is faster than the RT-AX88U and almost identical to the RAX120. The MR9600 leads with a score of 73 MBps, while in the reading test, the AX11000 leads with a score of 85 MBps.

We used the Ekahau Survey mobile app to test the Router’s signal strength and the Ekahau Sidekick WiFi diagnostic device. We conduct site surveys to generate heat maps showing the AX11000′ 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz signal strengths throughout our test house. The white circle represents the Router’s position, and the color represents the signal strength (on the right scale). Darker green indicates the strongest signal, weaker yellow, and gray indicates no signal is received. In this case, the AX11000’s 2.4 GHz signal was strong in most house areas but weaker in the far part of the house (about 75 feet from the Router). The AX11000’s 5GHz signal was also weak in the far corners of the house and had trouble maintaining a strong signal in the garage, but it covered a good portion of the house.

At just under $400, the TP-Link AX11000 WiFi Router certainly doesn’t rate as a cheap router, but it’s very fast and packed with features that will help take your online gaming to the next level. In addition to its blazing-fast file transfer speeds, it also offers eight gigabit LAN ports, link aggregation, USB C connectivity, and a 2.5 Gb WAN port for those lucky enough to have a multimode adapter or modem power. It also comes with a lifetime subscription to TP-Link’s HomeCare service.
