Along with the increasingly professional way of doing things, NAS (Network Attached Storage) is becoming an indispensable device of the business, especially the company specializing in innovative design. Imagine: You have a data or video to handle, have to share the whole team, the traditional USB is a disaster! Instead, using a NAS – dedicated storage device is a much better solution: just dropping the data into it, anyone wanting to get access to it.

So why do not we use a PC dedicated to storage, both easy to control and less expensive? This is a good idea and used by many people, but when it comes to the new reality “occur” a lot of problems:

– PC Components are not designed to run 24/7.

– High power consumption.

– Unreasonable speed segmentation when multiple computers are in the same access.

– No hierarchy, decentralize the viewer restriction data.

– Bulky size.

– Dust after a period of continuous operation.

Not only businesses but also households can use the NAS as an entertainment device, where all of their movies, music and photos are stored. Members want to see just accessing NAS instead of machines which must also be archived.

Among the NAS brands, WD is a very firm to research and improve the product. They continually absorb user comments, improve interface and functionality through each version. Today’s product I would like to introduce is the WD My Cloud EX2100, a small NAS device for home and small business. Compared to the Synology 213+ that I reviewed two years ago, My Cloud EX2100 has been much improved, both in business and entertainment.

Digital

– Connectivity: Wifi, LAN cable

– Processor: ARMADA 385 1.3 GHz dual-core

– RAM: 1 GB DDR3

– HDD: 2 x 4 TB WD Red

– Communication Port: 2 x USB 3.0; 2 x LAN

– Dimensions: 108 x 216 x 147 mm (high x long x wide)

– Fan heatsink: 70 mm

– Operating System Support: Windows Vista / 7/8; Mac OS X Yosemite / Mavericks / Mountain Lion / Lion

– Mobile support: Android, iOS, Windows Phone

– Warranty: 3 years (with HDD) / 2 years (without HDD)

Included accessories: instruction manual, adapter, 1.5 m cable and 4 power cables. Equipped with all these cables, My Cloud EX2100 has only one version available in all markets.

This NAS is relatively neat in size, width and length just a little HDD.

Speed test

The results below are for reference only because of the difference in keep runs and differences in motherboard LAN chips.

My Cloud EX2100 has 4 storage modes:

– JBOD: Normal mode, each hard drive is a partition. Can use up to 8 TB in JBOD mode.

– Spanning: Normal mode but combine two hard drives into one partition. Can use up to 8 TB in Spanning mode.

– RAID 0: Data is written to each HDD in half, read / write 2 times the normal mode (theoretically). However, if a drive is corrupt, all data is corrupted. Can use up to 8 TB in RAID 0 mode.

– RAID 1: Both drives are recording identical data, one main drive and one backup. If the data in the primary drive is corrupted, the backup drive will restore. Only 4 TB can be used in RAID 1 mode.

Conclude

WD My Cloud EX2100 is a relatively complete NAS. In addition to business-critical data deduplication, the My Cloud EX2100 targets home users with the ability to use data on smartphones and tablets. In particular, thanks to the power of dual-core ARMADA 385 and 1 GB of DDR3 memory, My Cloud EX2100 can stream and stream video over both LAN and Internet. Family and movie sets can now be viewed anywhere without having to store them.

One of the strengths but also weaknesses of My Cloud EX2100: The ability to control too meticulous. For those who understand about computers in particular and technology in general, this is a great advantage when it is possible to intervene deeply and maximize the functionality of the device. But normal users will find it very difficult to control My Cloud EX2100. I think in the future WD should design two control modes, one for pro and one for the rest of the world.
