In the countryside of Thailand, people still tell a story about a Japanese girl cheated by Thai husband. After burning the burnt-down house, the unfaithful woman was burnt alive and dead, carrying a grudge in her heart. The people here call it Watabe. And that is the background story that you will see happenings in Ghost House.
Probably after making a lot of viewers in horror movies with familiar motifs, Western filmmakers have turned the “horror place” into a set in Thailand. Ghost House is a story about a couple traveling to the land of gold pagoda, but accidentally tricked by the bad guys and entangled in a violent hatred spirit, want to take over the human body live to live in the world.
At the beginning of the film, Ghost House was quite impressed when performing on the streets of Thailand. But in my opinion, the masks of evil shoulders are not very impressive or frightening in some segments. It may be that light stitches are not well established, so some places may make you feel slightly fake Watabe. Even more than once, I noticed that the movement of the character made it very difficult to express, like a puppet or a lot of pictures and then put together a motion picture.
That is not to say, even the familiar stage is to scare spectators, Ghost House is not much. If the two main characters just shrugged my shoulders, I found another supporting character, Gogo (Michael S. New), more interesting. Michael does not perform well, but this character is at least more personal than the two main characters. However, with the society more and more the evil over, this character help to help the two of them outrageously, creating a sense of drama. You may think that it is just a matter of survival, but in my view, it seems to have surpassed the odds of becoming more and more dangerous after all. Not to mention, Gogo character is like the role of hired employees with two customers only.
But that’s probably not Gogo’s problem. The main issue of the film I think lies in how content is built and what guides the film circuit. The plot is weak and there are many unreasonable holes. If the other horror movies, you may have just watched and fear, do not know when the threat of the film will jump into your “weak heart”, Ghost House is not so. The film is a rather irrational story that I think it is not realistic, so that you will feel both bothered because of the behavior of the character led to the progress in the film.
On the other hand, I also feel like the film is about the topic of cultural shock when people move from country to country. They do not understand the cultural and spiritual issues of another people and do things that they should not do and then take consequences. But if so, the content of the film seems to be too biased. The biggest thing in my mind is probably Jim’s sentiment for Julie to find a way to “fix” her fiancée, despite the cost to be warned is very expensive. But Jim is a good person, and he is not worth the price. This discomfort is the same as when I played Heavy Rain before and the character also entangled in a similar situation.
Another thing worth mentioning is the film circuit. Ghost House has many “long lines” that make me feel very tired to watch. Most Thai songs in the movie made me pretty headache. It is unclear if this is the intention of the filmmaker not, but when feeling tired of the pace of the film, you will often “loopholes” in the “defense”. This is the golden moment for Ghost House to play the game “startled little,” and though not much but it is quite effective. In addition, in some ways, I have the feeling that the film is a bit superstitious and there are no funny segments to create a little spice as usual.
After the end, Ghost House in my sense is a failed film. Horror elements can startle you at times, but not enough to save the drama’s lackluster episodes. The shaping of the evil should not create fear for the viewer, but it can only scare a couple of times when applying simultaneous images and sounds at the right time. Movies that do not abuse these elements to intimidate viewers are a great compliment. If you like the mild kind of horror, Ghost House may not be a bad idea, but it can disappoint you at the end of the film is not satisfied.
