amazon HP Proliant DL20 Gen9 reviews

HP ProLiant DL20 Gen9 is the latest product line that Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE) integrates a large number of features into a small area chassis. Test a deep area on 15in, compact 1U rackmount chassis, Intel E3-1200 v5 support, Xeon ‘Skylake’ microprocessor plus DDR4 memory along with many other expansion options together.

The DL20 Gen9 is surprisingly affordable at a price starting from 500 (pounds). The entry-level models with Pentium G4400 dual-core processors and HPE also offer a 3.5GHz G4500 processor, two selected i3-6000 cores plus eight Base E3-1200 v5 and high-performance CPUs.

Our evaluation system is equipped with a 3.4 GHz quad-core E3-1230 v5 Xeon CPU, 16GB DDR4 and upgraded Smart Array P440 PCI-E for RAID card.

Storage and SmartDrives

The base system has two hot-plug (NHP) LFF SATA drive bays, but you can order additional hot-plug drive bays to replace when needed. Either way, it is being managed and controlled by Smart Array B140i to improve the efficiency of management.

In addition, the model also has four hot-swap SFF, using the B140i controller for SATA drives. For more storage performance, HPE provides the H240 HBA Smart Array with additional 12Gbps SAS support for storage programs.

Our system has been equipped with a Smart Array P440 HBA that we think is essential for this server. It supports a 4GB FBWC (flash backed write cache) optional module and RAID6 card.

Design

DL20 Gen9 is well arranged and designed, we can easily access all important areas. The occupied motherboards on the right side of the chassis with the processor are facing forward and cooled by two small fans.

Four DIMM slots are located next to the CPU socket and a solid plastic plate to improve the cooling air flow efficiency. Our system is equipped with two DDR4 8GB UDIMM modules and a motherboard supporting up to 64GB.

A third dual-rotor is placed in the middle of the frame and is tilted towards the riser expansion cards. You have two riser card options with one standard providing an x8 PCI-Express slot on each side and the other slot replacing with a FlexibleLOM Ethernet interface configured as a quad-port Gigabit HPE and 10GbE dual port adapter. HPE provides a riser card with a special 16X PCI-E slot for the Nvidia Quadro K2200 GPU Module.

Energy supply

The received model has a fixed single PSU of 290W, but can provide additional backup power. You can upgrade the server to two hot-plug PSUs using HP’s enablement kit, although this is only supported by SFF bays models.

The new Xeon chip line with its presence is known in our power test with servers only 39W in standby mode and peaked at 102W under extreme pressure from SiSoft Sandra benchmark applications. By comparing this, a ProLiant DL320 Gen8 v2 server with a speed of 3.4 GHz E3-1240 v3 Xeon results in 54W at idle and peaking at 120W.

HP did one thing to keep the noise level to the lowest level that made DL20 Gen9 suitable for a wide range of deployments, including small offices. Using effectively the iOS SPLnFFT application on our iPad, we noted the background noise level is 38dB in the lab when all other devices are turned off. When the server turns on the noise level of the machine, it only increases to 41dB.

HP Proliant DL20 Gen9 is favored with the HPE’s embedded iLO4 chip, which is easier for remote management with simpler and better features than ever. HP’s iLO4 portal has a smooth web form that provides lots of information about key activities and components, error alerts and direct access to online support.

The servers provided with a standard iLO4 license include options for remote control and shutting down or restarting it. You will need to upgrade to an HP iLO4 Essentials license if you want to have full functionality in the operating system for remote control and measure power consumption …

HPE’s standard iLO4 setup provides a 3D graph of server temperature

HPE Insight system will be integrated on the server, you can also access the server management system directly from the iLO4 port. Note that all important firmware updates for ProLiant servers are provided free of charge, but the ROM BIOS firmware update must be in accordance with warranty conditions or contract support.

You will need a full version of iLO4 Essentials operating system to fully utilize all the functions integrated in the operating system.
