amazon KZ ZEX Pro reviews

KZ – is a familiar name in the audio enthusiast community by targeting the low-priced in-ear headphones market, providing users with “good-cheap” products. However, most of its headset models or the recent launch of ZEX have received a lot of feedback from a large number of users, both positive and negative. Come to CRN (ZEX Pro) – KZ’s latest re-release with a partnership between the company and Crinacle – a famous audio critic with a huge spectrum of spectrum data and many other successful collaborative projects such as Blessing 2: Dusk, Yume: Midnight…, made a splash on foreign audio forums with the new tagline “A Taste of the Top”.

Note: ZEX Pro is a test version of KZ x Crinacle before the CRN announcement to see user feedback on the ‘new sound’. The difference between CRN and ZEX Pro lies in the Crinacle logo located on the body of the headset, but both versions have the same accessories, design, and sound quality.

Design, finish, soundproof level

Unlike most other models of KZ headphones, the CRN is ergonomically designed to help the product stick to the ear more firmly and provide an extremely comfortable experience… for a small number of users. The inside of the ear body can be uncomfortable for some users or simply not compatible with the ear, partly due to the relatively long ear canal of the CRN for an ergonomically designed headset and big size. However, the finishing level of the CRN is good thanks to the combination of the zinc alloy earpiece and the resin shell, which does not feel cheap and is more durable.

On the face of the CRN headset, there is an exposed air hole to improve the wearing experience, not to be secreted in long-term use, and at the same time contribute to the customization of the final sound quality. This affects the sound insulation of the CRN a bit, but depending on the purpose of use such as just listening to music in a not-too-noisy environment, this is not necessarily a major drawback of the product.

Sound quality

This product sound quality assessment article is made based on the manufacturer’s available cable; earplugs: Moondrop Spring Tips, [Final E Type size L + Hybrid mod], Spinfit CP100 size M, KZ Starline size M; Dac/ Amp: JCally JM6, JCally JM20; Source: Hiby R3 Pro Saber, Samsung Galaxy Note 10+, Laptop; file format MP3, FLAC, DSD128…

With a sensitivity of 104dB and an impedance of 25Ω, the KZ ZEX Pro (x Crinacle CRN) can be paired with virtually any device with an audio output.

The sound quality of KZ ZEX Pro (x Crinacle CRN) is bass-neutral – only the bass range is emphasized more clearly, neutral in the remaining ranges.

Bass

One of the biggest differences between the CRN and most other KZ headphones is the bass range. While the V sound quality (bass, low-mid and treble ranges are emphasized more clearly than the rest of the frequency bands) that KZ often targets for general users, CRN cuts the amount of low-mid and focuses only on highlighting each bass band. As a result, this product can reproduce a cleaner overall sound quality, most notably in music with fast-playing bass notes but still retaining a small amount of ‘interesting’, playful, characters does not cause boredom in the first minutes of listening.

To achieve this pure sound quality for just under $50, CRN has to trade off other advantages that the old sound quality of KZ has: the bass range of CRN does not show details and lacks a bit of clarity vivid, partly due to the lack of dynamic driver characteristics of the dynamic vibrations of the bass range, and the low response rate of the bass range is not outstanding.

Mid-tone

Thanks to the customized sound quality in a new direction, CRN can reproduce the mid-range neatly and cleanly without being obscured by the low-mid range. The whole mid-range is evenly distributed, without much emphasis on any part for most mid-range instruments to be fully represented, most prominently in the female and male vocals with a relative amount of detail. However, in the high-mid range, vocal reproduction is quite rough, not smooth, and losing its neutrality. The friction consonants of the vocalist are still in the music, but only at an average level, not too clear to cause a feeling of harshness when listening to the product for a long time. CRN has done a good job in customizing the overall sound quality to help the mid-range perform better than other competitors in the same price range with V-like sound quality.

Treble part:

The treble range reproduced on the CRN is not as annoying or jarring as KZ’s previous models for some users, nor does this product do anything more special than its competitors. The frequency range is not extended; high-pitched musical instruments such as cymbals, and gongs… lack sparkle but do not cause dark sound quality. According to information from some users’ experience, the 8kHz peak frequency is quite prominent and tends to push the ‘s’ in the treble range, taking an example that shows this weakness most prominently in the chorus first Yorushika’s “Thoughtcrime”. However, the percussion is still expressed evenly, just not fully reproduced details and lack of excitement.

Soundstage, timbre:

Normally, most models of earbuds do not perform well in terms of soundstage, especially in this price segment, it is difficult to reproduce the depth of instruments in the music, partly due to the way the headphones work. Earplugs and CRNs are no exception. The timbre of CRN is somewhat sharp, not seamless, and lacks neutrality. However, in this price segment, the overall technicality of CRN is still more competitive than competitors in the same price range in terms of how to reproduce the position of instruments in the music, although sometimes CRN has difficulty recreating the seamlessness of some tracks with a lot of audio information playing at the same time.
