Legion Pro 5i: Large Design, Optimized for Usability
The newest Legion Pro 5i shows design elements that match its seventh generation model. The design of the new Legion Pro laptop system presents a non-aggressive appearance according to Biareview because the system maintains an understated professional design that resembles gaming equipment. The designers created a flat surface on the lid which displays only the Legion logo at its corner.
The Lenovo Legion Pro 5i is a thick laptop constructed primarily of hard gray plastic, with a metal lid and a combination of sharp lines and stylish curves. Biareview finds this not particularly attractive, but very practical. The laptop presents a tidy appearance on the desk because its most ports are positioned at the back, which prevents any wires from being seen at the front. The device includes two USB Type-A ports and one USB Type-C port and a headphone jack and a webcam mute switch which together allow users to interact with specific applications.
The Legion Pro 5i gaming laptop displays excellent design features which most mobile gaming computers fail to deliver. Biareview found the curved lines which extend from the keyboard base to the touchpad area and which extend to the ventilation holes of the device to provide improved handling and comfort during usage. Lenovo has extensive experience in the gaming laptop field, so it’s no surprise they know how to create such a high-quality device in terms of design.
Legion Pro 5i: Display
Biareview considers the Lenovo Legion Pro 5i an interesting 16-inch laptop, which has a display that shows clear and beautiful images and provides users with extensive display area. This is likely due to Lenovo’s “clever” choice of a 16:10 aspect ratio, which causes the screen to appear wider (even though black areas may appear at the top and bottom during specific content displays or game sessions). The laptop features narrow screen bezels which combine with its top bezel, which extends beyond the screen level, to create a design that enhances both the camera space and laptop opening functionality.
The screen allows users to view QHD resolution content while experiencing high refresh rates. The screen demonstrates its performance through practical testing, which shows its ability to produce sharp images and high contrast while achieving exceptional brightness levels that reach almost 400 nits (which exceeds Lenovo’s standard brightness of 300 nits). The anti-glare IPS panel screen shows even better performance when used outdoors under direct sunlight.
Another unique feature is that the matte screen coating is effective when using the device at night or in dark places (which gamers use to maintain their privacy). The screen reaches 150 nits brightness at 75% brightness setting, which represents 50% of typical laptop display brightness, whereas at full brightness the display exceeds 400 nits brightness level. The screen delivers a valuable experience through its brightness performance.
Legion Pro 5i: Performance
The essential requirements for an effective gaming laptop product consist of two main components the system performance and its cooling technology. The Legion Pro 5i new model offers outstanding performance through its two main functions which serve as essential system elements. The system uses 13th-generation Intel Core i7 processor which provides enhanced processing capabilities when compared to 12th-generation CPUs and it competes with the previous generation i9 processor while the RTX 4060 shows better performance than last year’s RTX 3070 while its results match those of 3070 Ti.
The 13th-generation Intel Core processor provides the best gaming platform available worldwide. The top mobile gaming processor from Intel achieves maximum clock speeds of 5.6 GHz while delivering 49% improved multitasking capabilities compared to its previous version. The chip provides 89% FPS increase in Counter-Strike: Global Offensive through the 13th-generation Intel Core i9-13950HX processor while Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy shows a 52% FPS increase. The optimal gaming processor enables 24 core processing with 32 thread execution and an expanded L2 cache to enhance performance during high-end AAA game play. The two core types of Intel’s hybrid performance architecture system function together to enhance overall system efficiency. The system allows users to achieve optimal performance through its capability to distribute system tasks among different features. Intel Wi-Fi 6E (Gig+) technology provides three times faster internet connection speeds which maintain continuous service. Thunderbolt 4 ports enable users to convert their laptops into complete gaming systems. The system supports multiple 4K display types. Thunderbolt delivers connection speeds of 40 gigabits per second which enables users to enhance their performance through its sufficient bandwidth capacity. The system provides memory flexibility through its support of DDR5 and DDR4 memory types which operate at speeds up to 5200 MHz and 16 PCIe Gen 5 lanes.
Lenovo Legion Pro 5i uses PCIe 4.0 SSD storage system which provides rapid data retrieval and operating system startup. The Legion Pro 5i cooling system operates through its main air intake which uses a big vent located at the base of the laptop. The system uses its side and rear vents to release warm air after taking in fresh air through its central vent. The fans create strong airflow but Biareview found the “rustling” sound of the fans which operated at high volume to be disturbing during quiet nighttime silver. The machine maintains its operational temperature because this system provides effective thermal regulation during intense gameplay.
The Legion ColdFront 5.0 system uses current Intel and NVIDIA technology to build a system which operates with lower temperatures and less noise and greater energy efficiency. ColdFront 5.0 uses its new dual-fan system to bring in fresh air through the keyboard and bottom cover while it expels warm air through the system’s side and rear vents.
The keyboard design and the air venting system generate areas that produce warmth but these areas maintain safe temperature levels. The cooling system enables the system to deliver uninterrupted rapid performance through its effective temperature management system.
When users activate Auto mode through the Lenovo AI Engine system, all system functions operate without problems. The system delivers better performance for gamers when users activate Performance mode.
Performance mode becomes inaccessible when users select chargers other than the provided charger because Auto mode uses different system elements to decrease Legion Pro 5i performance. Lenovo’s built-in applications use part of the system’s RAM because they run automatically when users start the system. The system maintains above 80 percent RAM usage because no programs run at the moment.
The Lenovo Legion Pro 5i provides better performance and thermal management when connected to a power source. The Lenovo power adapter which you must bring on your trip becomes an inconvenient item because it has a large size.
Legion Pro 5i: Gaming Performance
The gaming performance tests on the Legion Pro 5i produced excellent results when the device operated with its power supply. The Biareview testing process will not push the system to its limits through testing all games under maximum graphic settings and maximum display resolution with maximum frame rates but the system can run all current top games successfully.
The Lenovo Legion Pro 5i performance was assessed through multiple games that we tested. The Cyberpunk 2077 game performed at 39 frames per second when using Ray Tracing Ultra settings and native resolution with NVIDIA DLSS enabled. The Forza Horizon 5 game performed at 85 frames per second when using maximum settings and native resolution with Ray Tracing enabled. The Valorant game reached a maximum frame rate of 155 fps while using all settings at maximum. The Legion Pro 5i has a battery life that matches the standard battery life of most gaming laptops which provides shorter battery life than typical office laptops.
The Legion Pro 5i computer shut down completely after running the PCMark Modern Office test for 2 hours and 33 minutes. The test used the Legion Pro 5i’s default settings with screen brightness set to 150 nits and Auto Performance mode active. The system operates with a default refresh rate of 165Hz which users can extend battery usage by switching to 60Hz. The battery requires slightly more than one hour to reach full charge from an empty state.
How are the keyboard and touchpad? Lenovo has always impressed the “pro gaming” community with its keyboard design, which can be described as excellent. The Legion Pro 5i maintains this tradition through its keyboard which provides users with a spacious and comfortable typing experience that has proper design elements. The gaming keys feel great and are responsive, even though they aren’t mechanical keyboards. Biareview also praised the full-size arrow keys, which I feel are essential for any gaming-focused laptop. The function key row also provides users with many additional control functions.
Lenovo designed its 16-inch laptop to provide enough space for users to operate a numeric keypad. The numeric keypad which is used on this device appears to be smaller than regular size keys which leads to a restricted keyboarding experience when the user works on 17 or 18-inch devices.
The laptop Boston creates a small problem because its thick design forces users to type with raised hands.
The keyboard contains Lenovo’s Spectrum RGB backlight system which provides full illumination so users can create custom light settings through Lenovo Vantage software which divides the keyboard into four control zones.
The keyboard presents an attractive appearance with vibrant colors which become visible when the backlight activates particularly during nighttime operation of the laptop.
Legion Pro 5i users experience complete touchpad control through its large touchpad which maintains responsiveness across all usage conditions because of its smooth surface finish.
What functions does the integrated camera develop along with the sound system?
The Legion Pro 5i front-facing camera delivers acceptable 720p video quality. The laptop does not include any biometric features which prevents Windows Hello from working with the device. The only interesting feature is the on/off button on the side to disable the camera when needed.
The camera supports Tobii Experience which lets you use its specialized eye-tracking software to run compatible games and programs. The additional feature provides practical benefits because it brings value to users.
The dual 2W speakers of the Legion Pro 5i produce decent sound which reaches loud volumes but their sound quality fails to reproduce all audio details therefore users should use gaming headphones to achieve optimal sound quality.
Do the pre-installed software programs provide any useful functionality?
The Lenovo Legion Pro 5i comes pre-installed with a lot of software which shows multiple background applications that will decrease battery power and system capabilities. Users should not delete the Lenovo pre-installed software because it will lead to operational problems with specific functions.
The pre-installed software from Lenovo includes Hotkeys Voice Now Vantage and Arena as essential programs for users. Users can access Tobii Experience for eye-tracking functions X-Rite for screen calibration Nahimic for advanced audio settings and McAfee antivirus software which users can uninstall.
The most valuable software for Biareview according to its findings became Lenovo Vantage which users used after that to access Hotkeys and Tobii.
Lenovo Vantage is software that helps change performance profiles (and personalize settings), change RGB backlighting, check internal system status, etc. You can also overclock the GPU in Vantage (or CPU, if you first enable overclocking in the BIOS). This application is a bit complicated, but it works perfectly and is very useful. Lenovo Hotkeys is a very simple program for managing a few shortcuts for various functions such as changing performance modes or toggling the default function row (there’s also a dedicated button in the function row for this application). Lenovo Voice includes a range of random features like a translator, voice recorder, etc., but feels unnecessary on this laptop.
Lenovo Arena aims to be an “all-in-one” launcher, gathering all your games from multiple sources, but it’s very simple and better replaced by a third-party option like GOG Galaxy 2.0. Lenovo Now is ready to notify you about all the “exclusive” deals and promotions that you won’t use.
Conclusion
To be fair, Biareview really likes this Lenovo Legion Pro 5i. The design improvements, the latest Intel and NVIDIA internal hardware upgrades, and the spacious screen make this one of the most worthwhile gaming laptops currently available. However, disappointing battery life (even for a gaming laptop) and underperforming performance put the Legion Pro 5i at a disadvantage when it doesn’t come with a charger.
