amazon Lenovo ThinkPad P14s gen 2 reviews

Referring to “workstation”, we tend to immediately think of bulky, heavy machines that can replace weights for users to improve health. However, that is a thing of the past. Now thin and light is a trend in nearly every industry and laptops are no exception. If you do not keep up with the trend, the end rejection will be inevitable.

In this article, I want to introduce to everyone my experiences with the Lenovo ThinkPad P14s Gen 2 laptop. This is Lenovo’s latest workstation model aimed at business users and content creators, design, and data processing.

Design: A classic yet modern ThinkPad

There’s a reason ThinkPad laptops are so trusted by business and content creators: They’re durable, feature a minimalist yet sophisticated design, and have the best keyboards with the best typing experience on the market. With the P14s Gen 2, this remains unchanged.

At first glance, you can immediately see that the P14s Gen 2 is a classic ThinkPad with silver-gray tones and serious square lines. This laptop has a lot of customization in terms of materials, and the version I experienced here has the lid (side A) made of aluminum, while the case (side C, containing the keyboard and touchpad) is made of alloy magnesium. Combined, the ThinkPad P14s Gen 2 offers rugged, premium quality for the price, and in fact, the workstation meets the MIL-STD-810H military durability standard with shock and impact resistance and works in harsh environments in terms of temperature and humidity.

The modernity of the ThinkPad P14s Gen 2 comes from the weight when the machine weighs only 1.5 kg. Of course, this is not the lightest laptop on the market, but this is a respectable effort by Lenovo, considering the P14s Gen 2 is a workstation model and the 14-inch screen size of the machine. Putting a workstation in a backpack to take to work has never been so gentle.

The number of ports is out of the question when the ThinkPad P14s Gen 2 has all the ports you need to serve your work. On the left-hand side are 2 Thunderbolt 4 ports with DisplayPort 1.4 and PowerDelivery 3.0, 1 USB-A 3.2 Gen 2 port, HDMI 2.0 port, 3.5mm combo jack, and microSD card. On the other side, the machine is equipped with 1 smartcard reader port, 1 USB-A 3.2 Gen 2 port, Gigabit LAN port, and Kensington lock. The right-hand side is also where the heat sinks are located. With wireless connectivity, the ThinkPad P14s Gen 2 has enough Wi-Fi 6E and Bluetooth 5.2, both of which are the latest wireless connectivity standards.

Display

Screen Quality and Size

The Lenovo ThinkPad P14s Gen 2 features a 14-inch display available in multiple configurations to suit different user preferences. Options include Full HD (1920×1080) and Ultra HD (3840×2160) panels, catering to professionals who require high-resolution displays for detailed work such as graphic design, CAD modeling, and content creation. The IPS technology ensures wide viewing angles and vibrant colors, making the display suitable for multimedia consumption and collaborative tasks.

Color Accuracy and Calibration

For color-critical work, Lenovo offers configurations with factory-calibrated displays that meet industry standards for color accuracy. Some models feature Pantone validation, ensuring consistent and precise color reproduction for professionals in creative fields. The high color gamut coverage enhances the accuracy of on-screen content, making the P14s Gen 2 a reliable choice for tasks that demand precise color representation and fidelity.

Display Brightness and Anti-Glare Coating

The display’s brightness levels vary depending on the configuration, with options typically ranging from 250 nits to 500 nits. Higher brightness options are suitable for outdoor use and bright environments, minimizing glare and reflections while maintaining readability. An anti-glare coating further enhances visibility by reducing reflections, making it easier to work for extended periods without eye strain or discomfort in varying lighting conditions.

Performance

The Lenovo ThinkPad P14s Gen 2 features a legendary ThinkPad keyboard renowned for its tactile feedback, comfort, and durability. The spill-resistant keyboard includes ergonomic key travel and a responsive typing experience, making it ideal for prolonged typing sessions and data entry tasks. The backlit keyboard option enhances visibility in low-light environments, allowing users to work efficiently in any lighting condition without straining their eyes.

TrackPoint and Precision Touchpad

In addition to the keyboard, the P14s Gen 2 retains the iconic TrackPoint pointing device, providing a supplementary method of cursor control for users who prefer precision navigation without lifting their hands from the keyboard. The TrackPoint’s red pointing stick is complemented by a large precision touchpad with Windows Precision drivers, offering smooth tracking, multi-touch gestures, and accurate cursor control for intuitive navigation and productivity.

Standard color screen for graphic artists

ThinkPad P14s Gen 2 owns a 14-inch screen, Full HD resolution without touch. The device has other options, such as a 4K screen or touch support. Right out of the factory, the screen has been calibrated X-Rite Pantone color with Delta E < 2, the graphics standard.

Because there is no measuring tool available, I cannot provide specific numbers about the color coverage or brightness of the ThinkPad P14s Gen 2, the Full HD, a non-touch panel will have a brightness of 400 nits, covering 96% of the sRGB color space and 61% of AdobeRGB. From practical experience, I found that the ThinkPad P14s Gen 2 reproduces true and accurate colors, but the 400 nit brightness if used in the hot sun will be a bit difficult to see the content. In addition, the hinge design allows the screen to open to a 180-degree angle, making it easy to share the displayed content with others during group meetings.

The screen border of the ThinkPad P14s Gen 2 is still a bit thick like the previous generation, but there is a reason. Besides the webcam with the ThinkShutter privacy bar, the ThinkPad P14s Gen 2 is also equipped with an infrared sensor system for facial recognition.

The speaker of the machine is placed above the keyboard, so the sound quality is much better than laptops that place the speakers below the base. The external speaker system of the ThinkPad P14s Gen 2 is also fine-tuned with Dolby Audio, optimizing the sound for different uses such as watching movies, listening to music, etc., which can be adjusted via the pre-installed application on the machine.

The familiar ThinkPad keyboard

Anyone who has ever typed a ThinkPad keyboard will agree with me on this point: It’s the best laptop keyboard on the market today. The key has a deep journey, good bounce, and fast pressing without sticking to the text or sinking the key when pressed. Two levels of monochrome LED backlighting for you to work in the dark. And of course, when it comes to the ThinkPad keyboard, the “divine” TrackPoint is indispensable for you to control the mouse pointer.

The touchpad or touchpad of the ThinkPad P14s Gen 2 is also “honest” when the swipes, slides, and clicks are all very smooth. Although it has to make room for 2 mouse buttons, the touchpad is still spacious. The machine also fully supports gestures thanks to the Windows Precision driver. Besides the touchpad, you can see that the device also has a fingerprint sensor and a lot of security methods for you to choose from.

Connectivity and Ports

Port Selection and Versatility

Tested with the Crystal Disk Mark tool, the SSD SN730 has sequential read and write speeds of 3400MB/s and 1046 MB/s, while 4k random read and write speeds are 45 MB/s and 158 MB/s.

In terms of battery life, with average usage, and 70% brightness, the ThinkPad P14s Gen 2 can last about 8 hours, which is considered the end of a working day. If only watching movies on Netflix continuously, the battery life is pushed to more than 10 hours.

Comes with the device is a slim 65W charger that is often equipped on recent Lenovo laptops. The compact size of the charger reduces the burden on the backpack, and this capacity helps to fully charge the ThinkPad P14s Gen 2’s 50Wh battery in less than 2 hours.

Summary

The Lenovo ThinkPad P14s Gen 2 is a powerful workstation in a compact body. It can be said that this is an attractive choice for the professional and business user community, especially those who have experienced ThinkPad laptops.
