Referring to “workstation”, we tend to immediately think of bulky, heavy machines that can replace weights for users to improve health. However, that is a thing of the past. Now thin and light is a trend in nearly every industry and laptops are no exception. If you do not keep up with the trend, the end rejection will be inevitable.
In this article, I want to introduce to everyone my experiences with the Lenovo ThinkPad P14s Gen 2 laptop. This is Lenovo’s latest workstation model aimed at business users and content creators, design, and data processing.
Design: A classic yet modern ThinkPad
There’s a reason ThinkPad laptops are so trusted by business and content creators: They’re durable, feature a minimalist yet sophisticated design, and have the best keyboards with the best typing experience on the market. With the P14s Gen 2, this remains unchanged.
At first glance, you can immediately see that the P14s Gen 2 is a classic ThinkPad with silver-gray tones and serious square lines. This laptop has a lot of customization in terms of materials, and the version I experienced here has the lid (side A) made of aluminum, while the case (side C, containing the keyboard and touchpad) is made of alloy magnesium. Combined, the ThinkPad P14s Gen 2 offers rugged, premium quality for the price, and in fact, the workstation meets the MIL-STD-810H military durability standard with shock and impact resistance and works in harsh environments in terms of temperature and humidity.
The modernity of the ThinkPad P14s Gen 2 comes from the weight when the machine weighs only 1.5 kg. Of course, this is not the lightest laptop on the market, but this is a respectable effort by Lenovo, considering the P14s Gen 2 is a workstation model and the 14-inch screen size of the machine. Putting a workstation in a backpack to take to work has never been so gentle.
The number of ports is out of the question when the ThinkPad P14s Gen 2 has all the ports you need to serve your work. On the left side there are 2 Thunderbolt 4 ports that carry DisplayPort 1.4 with PowerDelivery 3.0 as well, plus 1 USB-A 3.2 Gen 2 port, an HDMI 2.0 port, a 3.5mm combo jack and also a microSD card. On the other side , the machine is equipped with 1 smartcard reader port, 1 USB-A 3.2 Gen 2 port, a Gigabit LAN port, and a Kensington lock. The right-hand side is also where the heat sinks are located. Beyond the keyboard,the P14s Gen 2 keeps the classic TrackPoint,so you get a second way to move the cursor without lifting your hands from the keyboard area. The red pointing stick is paired with a roomy precision touchpad, powered by Windows Precision drivers. That combo supports smooth movement, multi touch gestures, and accurate cursor control for navigation that feels natural and quick,especially when you are switching between tasks frequently.
Standard color screen for graphic artists
ThinkPad P14s Gen 2 owns a 14-inch screen, Full HD resolution without touch. The device has other options, such as a 4K screen or touch support. Right out of the factory, the screen has been calibrated X-Rite Pantone color with Delta E < 2, the graphics standard.
Since there’s no measuring tool here, i can’t really give exact numbers for the color reach or the brightness of the ThinkPad P14s Gen 2, the Full HD, a non touch panel. What i can say is that it is rated at 400 nits, covering about 96% of the sRGB space and around 61% of AdobeRGB. From my own practical use , i noticed that the ThinkPad P14s Gen 2 shows true, dependable colors. Still, that 400 nit brightness—if you’re using it out in the hot sun—might make the display a little harder to read, and the content can feel less vivid.
On top of that, the hinge design lets the screen open up to 180 degrees, so you can easily show what’s on the display to other people during group calls, or meetings, without too much awkward positioning.
As for the look, the screen frame on the ThinkPad P14s Gen 2 is still a bit on the chunky side, kind of like the previous generation. But there is a sensible explanation. The touchpad or touchpad of the ThinkPad P14s Gen 2 is also “honest” when the swipes, slides, and clicks are all very smooth. For instance, when I play League of Legends with the graphics settings turned up, I can still get over 150 fps, which is honestly pretty smooth.
Also, the ThinkPad P14s Gen 2 has Intelligent Cooling , it automatically changes the fan depending on what you’re doing—like graphic work, 3D rendering, or editing. In my experience, this little system works quite well especially for heavier graphics processing tasks.
My version of ThinkPad P14s Gen 2 comes with Western Digital’s SN730 SSD. This helps a lot with access speed, so stuff like opening applications, and moving files or copying data goes fast, not just in theory. When I checked it with Crystal Disk Mark tool, the SN730 shows sequential reading and writing around 3400MB/s and 1046 MB/s, and for 4K random it lands at about 45 MB/s for read, and 158 MB/s for write.
About battery life, with average usage, plus 70% brightness, the ThinkPad P14s Gen 2 usually lasts roughly 8 hours , which is pretty much the “end of a working day” mark. If you’re only streaming or watching movies on Netflix continuously, then it can stretch to more than 10 hours, so that part surprised me a bit.
It also comes with a slim 65W charger, the kind that’s commonly included with new Lenovo laptops. Because it is compact, there is less hassle in the backpack, and the output is enough to fill the 50Wh battery of the ThinkPad P14s Gen 2 in under 2 hours.
