amazon LG XBOOM GO PL7 reviews

To continue the evaluation series of potential LG Xboom Go speakers from Korea, today we will ‘play big’ when evaluating the most advanced version of the trio is the LG Xboom Go PL7.

The PL7’s box is identical in design to the PL5 but is much bigger and heavier, and it’s okay when the product inside is not small.

Besides the company prints, a few features such as 2 drivers with strong bass, Sound Boost feature, 24 hours use time, connection to more than 100 speakers, and IPX5 waterproof. So we can immediately see an advantage of PL7 that is battery life ‘strong’ much better than PL5 (18 hours).

Perhaps looking at the photo you can also see that the PL7’s design is identical to the PL5 since LG wants to keep a common design language for the entire Xboom PL product. We have a speaker made of soft plastic with a dark blue color, with small sound holes in the front.

And this is the LED ring on the side of the speaker, just like the PL5, is placed in the passive diaphragm so that when there is bass, it sticks out, indenting to look pretty.

Open the waterproof cover on the back, we see the same ports as the PL5 including USB Type-C, 3.5mm, LED on and off buttons, pairing and pairing multiple speakers, BUT the difference lies in one USB port, signaling new feature. With a battery up to 3900mAh, the PL7 will be able to play music for quite a long time, so it is ready to be able to share energy for other products in case of need. In other words, the PL7 will act as a backup speaker, which is pretty cool!

So apart from the ability to charge, what is the difference between the Pl7 and PL5? If you look directly, you will see that the PL7 is quite large, the volume must be from one and a half times to twice the junior. For a direct comparison, my Samsung Galaxy S10 Plus becomes too tiny when placed next to this speaker.

Weight is also something worth mentioning. PL5 weighs 640g, which is not too light, but with PL7 this number ‘jumps’ to 1.45g, which is more than double! This size and weight make the PL7 significantly reduced mobility, either taking up more space in the bag or will be more suitable for those with cars than in the trunk of a motorcycle.

But in exchange for sure is the ability to perform. The company did not let the trade-offs for compactness cost, when equipping the PL7 with 2 drivers that are considerably larger than the PL5, 2.3 inches versus 1.75 inches. Through the plastic layer with holes in the front, we can also vaguely see this difference, the size of the PL7’s diaphragm is truly impressive.

The difference in volume is also quickly seen when we turn on the speaker, when the same volume level on the smartphone, the PL7 is about 20-30% louder than the PL5. So it can be said that the PL5 is still a loudspeaker for indoor play, and can ‘play well’ when taken outdoors, the PL7 can easily play in large rooms, and even more powerful when taken out. PL7 stands on par with the Sony XB43, becoming 2 outdoor music speakers that still retain certain mobility, which can be carried, not fixed in one place.

The sound quality of PL7 is also different from PL5, not identical. Before turning on Clear Sound (Sound Boost), the PL7 still kept the sound quality of the PL5’s trend, but with more bass and more force. The diaphragm strength is evident in songs like Queen’s Another one bites the dust, where every drum hit can feel more force, a more ‘physical’ feel.

The midsection also has a better thickness than the PL5 in Sound Boost off mode, but still lacks a bit of the high-mid to stand out. Tori Kelly’s voice in Winter Wonderland is rich, has a nice warmth, but as I said it still lacks a bit of brightness.

When enabled Sound Boost, the sound quality of the PL7 does not light up as much as PL5, but still lies at a slight, quite interesting. Although it does not light up much, each sound range of the speaker has an upgrade, thereby creating a more comprehensive sound quality. Bass retains as much amount as without Sound Boost enabled, but has been made cleaner, increasing the punch that PL7 has advantages available compared to PL5.

The most upgraded part is definitely the mid-range when the overall tonality of the PL7 is dark, so when the brightness is increased in the high mid-range, it goes up strongly, standing out from the background. The high sound also received a similar upgrade, not able to turn the PL7 into a powerful speaker in the high range but just enough to enhance the mid-range.

Big and heavy but too ‘good’

The PL7 is also quite similar to the Sony eXtra Bass XB43 because it has to integrate a large battery with a large diaphragm, so it has to trade a lot of mobility, both big and heavy. But once turned on for use, the user will immediately understand the reason for these trade-offs, when we have too much volume, the sound is also thicker and richer than the lower range products.

This will be a ‘portable’ speaker but suitable for those who use it as a desktop speaker with a computer and sometimes take it outdoors for a picnic; or those who can afford to carry a heavy product every day.
