amazon Nest X Yale Lock With Nest Connect reviews

Nest Connect’s Nest X Yale Lock is a sharp, smart door lock that combines Yale reliability with Nest IoT connectivity at home.

The newest addition to the Nest line of smart home devices, the Nest X Yale Lock with Nest Connect ($279), is a sleek, smart door lock that you can control from anywhere with a mobile app or Nest’s intuitive web dashboard. As with most smart locks, it’s pretty easy to set up, and it offers some cool features, including Auto-Lock, One-Touch Lock, and a timeline that shows you who locked and unlocked the door.

Design and Features

The Nest X Yale Lock is a beautifully crafted product. The outside of the escutcheon has the same black glass capacitive touchscreen and white backlit keyboard as the Yale Assure Lock SL (YRD256). It has the same color (Oil Palm Copper, Polished Bronze, or Nickel Satin), but At 4.5 x 2.5 x 0.8 inches (HWD).

There’s a small speaker on the right side and two terminals on the bottom that you can use as a backup if the lock’s battery dies. Place a 9-volt battery over the connectors to power the lock. The keyboard stays dark until you tap the Yale logo, then it shows the numeric keypad, back button, test button, and settings button. The check and back buttons are used during setup, and tapping on the settings button initiates a voice command to go to the Nest app to adjust the settings.

The escutcheon’s color-matching interior looks identical to the YRD256’s escutcheon: It measures 7.0 x 2.7 x 2.0 inches and features a black plastic battery cover (the lock runs on four AA batteries). A blue backlit button to enable and disable private mode and a thumb for manual locking and unlocking. Private mode disables access to the keypad, which means that the door can only be unlocked from the inside.

The key does not contain Wi-Fi. Instead, it connects to the included Nest Connect hub, which connects to your home Wi-Fi to allow access from anywhere. The white hub is relatively small (3.1 x 2.2 x 1.8 inches) and plugs into a wall outlet between the router and the padlock. If you already own a Nest Connect hub or a Nest Secure home security system, you can purchase a private key for $249.

The lock interacts with other Nest devices and works with Nest’s mobile and web-based apps. For example, if you have an outdoor Nest Cam or a Nest Hello Doorbell that lets you see who’s outside, you can lock or unlock the door using the same app, although you can’t let the lock activate the camera when it’s locked photo or unlocked. However, you can use Nest’s Home/Away Assist feature to turn compatible smart lights on and off and automatically control and disable the Nest Secure security system when the lock is locked and unlock. Home/Away Assist can also be used to activate the Auto-Lock feature, which automatically locks the door after a specific amount of time when you leave the house (10 seconds, one minute, or five minutes).

Missing is support for Amazon Alexa or Google Assistant voice commands, though Nest promises more integrations. Furthermore, the lock does not support interaction with IFTTT devices or Z-Wave home automation devices like the August SmartLock Pro + Connect.

Once installed, the lock is listed as a device on the home screen of the Nest app. Tap the icon to open the Lock Screen; there’s a big circle showing the lock’s current status (locked, unlocked, offline). Press and hold the circle for a second or two to unlock the door and change the status. A line of text below the circle shows the last time the key was used and by whom.

At the bottom of the screen is a button that turns privacy on and off; the Family and Guests button takes you to a screen where you can add users and assign permanent or temporary access with specific access dates and times. The History button takes you to a screen showing a timeline of events. Tap any date to see when the lock was opened and closed and by whom. Here you can also see when private mode has been turned on and off, when AutoLock has been used and when/if the lock has gone offline and back online.

The gear icon in the upper right corner of the Lock Screen takes you to a screen where you can enable the Home/Away Assistant and Auto-Lock features; enable/disable the lock and unlock notifications; enable/ disables One Touch Lock. Allows you to automatically touch the Yale logo to lock the door and enable/disable Private mode.

Settings and Performance

Nest X Yale Lock with Nest ConnectWhile locks like the August SmartLock Pro, Friday Lock, and Danalock V3 BTZU all use your existing latch and latch hardware; the Nest X Yale lock replaces everything and installs a little longer. That said, it’s pretty easy to set up and comes with comprehensive instructions, although if you’re not handy or don’t want to have it done professionally, you can call your local locksmith or use a Nest service. Pro to find authorized installers. That is your first Nest device; you’ll have to download the app and create an account.

To start, I removed my old deadbolt lock completely and installed the Nest latch assembly. I attached the external keyboard to the internal mounting plate using the included hardware, making sure to thread the data cable through the appropriate hole carefully, attach the cable to the inner eke plate, and screw the mecutcheon into the mounting plate. After making sure that the manual crown turned easily, I inserted four AA batteries and was greeted with the voice command “Hello from Yale and Nest” and prompted to tap the Yale logo to get started.

After the voice prompts, I generated a master code (using four to eight digits) and closed the door. When prompted to check the mechanical key and unlock activity, I tapped the checkmark icon and was ready to add the key to my Nest account. I opened the app, hit the settings gear in the upper right corner, and selected Add product. I scanned the barcode on the Nest Connect, plugged it in, and waited a few seconds while the Nest Assist pulled my network settings from the previously installed Nest Cam Indoor. I tap Add another device, scan the barcode inside the lock’s inner case, and give the lock a position. That launched a video tutorial. I was then prompted to press and hold the button on the Interior cluster until the light flashed blue and the lock said “ready.” I pressed Next and waited a few seconds while the key was added to my Nest account and the installation was complete. Then I switch to the Passcode screen, where I generate unique codes for myself and my family members.

Except for the Schlage Century Touch Screen Lock that we reviewed a few years ago, nearly all of the smart locks we’ve come across are relatively quiet, but the Nest X Yale lock could be the kind of lock quietest. It’s also a solid performer, never failing to lock or unlock when I pressed the app button.

The Home/Away Assist Auto-Lock feature also worked without a hitch, automatically locking the door a minute after leaving the house. Push notifications arrive quickly after each lock and unlock event, and the One Touch Lock feature never locks the door when the Yale logo is pressed. In addition, the lock always follows the My Family and Guests rules, allowing and denying access to certain users during specific times and days according to my schedule.

Conclusion

The Nest X Yale Lock with Nest Connect is a solid choice for a smart door lock. Especially if you’ve equipped your home with other Nest devices such as the Nest Secure security solution, the Nest Hello Doorbell, and a or more Nest Cam security cameras, it’s easy to install and configure. The Nest Connect hub lets you open and closes the lock and access friends and family from anywhere. Not only did the lock work flawlessly in our tests, but it’s also one of the quietest locks we’ve tested. However, it currently lacks support for Google Assistant and the Amazon Alexa voice control you get with our Editors’ Choice, August SmartLock Pro + Connect. It doesn’t support apps using IFTTT or work with Z-Wave devices.
