amazon ViewSonic TD2455 reviews

The ViewSonic TD2455 is a smart and beautifully designed 24-inch touchscreen monitor for businesses and classrooms. It supports both gesture-based (finger) multitouch and uses with the included stylus. Its stand tilts back unusually far (within 30 degrees horizontally), allowing a standing presenter to control the monitor from its display easily. The TD2455 doesn’t come cheap, but the picture quality and presentation-friendly features make it a buy.

Unique design for exhibits and stands

The 23.8-inch screen uses in-plane switching (IPS) with 1080p resolution (1,920 x 1,080 pixels) in widescreen format(16:9). The flat screen is enclosed in a matte black cabinet. It offers a 0.6-inch bezel at the bottom and ultra-thin bezels on both sides good for double display setups-and at the top as well.

The display is a 10-point capacitive touchscreen, capable of gesture-based multitouch finger control. (It can register 10 fingers at the same time.) The TD2455 is very responsive to the supplied stylus, which also comes with a spare nib. I can say that it feels pleasingly smooth in both modes of use.

When considering the stand, the screen is 28.7 x 53.8 x 42.6 cm (HWD) and weighs 6.4 kilos. The curious depth is because an unusual stand, like an articulated desk lamp, except that instead of facing downwards, the display can be tilted from facing you to tilt back upwards. (The screen angle maxes out at 60 degrees from vertical, or -5 degrees.)

A powerful set of ports for a useful set

As far as connectivity goes, the TD2455 has a USB Type-A upstream port and two downstream USB-C ports, one USB-C port that also supports DisplayPort over USB, one HDMI port, and two DisplayPort ports consisting of one DisplayPort input and one DisplayPort output. The DisplayPort-in connects to a computer, and the TD2455 might be connected from DisplayPort-out to a projector or interactive whiteboard. Alternatively, if your graphics card can handle Multi-Stream Transport (MST) of DisplayPort, you may daisy-chain up to four displays, provided their resolution does not exceed 1080p and they all have both DisplayPort-in and DisplayPort-out connectors.

Few of the monitors reviewed support multi-monitor connectivity. The Dell 27 USB-C Monitor (P2720DC) is unique in that it allows for an extra display to be daisy chained using two DisplayPort connectors. Upon this event, Dell Express Daisy-Chaining auto-configures the Windows display settings for an extended dual-monitor arrangement. The LG UltraFine 4K Focused Monitor for Mac (24MD4KL-B) does this by employing two Thunderbolt 3 ports: one for connection to the computer, the second for the additional monitor.

The USB-C port supports DisplayPort over USB, allowing it to transfer video and data. It also supports USB Power Delivery 60 watts, allowing it to power or charge the laptop (or other device) it’s connected to.

Most of the ports are located on the rear side, but they do enjoy easier access compared to many other similarly configured models due to the extraordinary tilt-up range of the monitor. This tilt feature gives you view access to ports that otherwise would be hidden behind the display. The two downstream USB ports, for connecting peripherals such as flash drives or external hard drives, are conveniently positioned on the left side of the display.

Buttons and menus

The TD2455 monitor’s controls are buttons on the bottom bezel near the right edge. The farthest to the right is the power button, and the five square buttons to the left are used for navigating the monitor’s on-screen display.

The top-level choices (aka Quick Menu) might consist of Colors Modes or View Settings (preset modes), Contrast/Brightness (slider), Input Selection (HDMI, DisplayPort, and USB-C), and Main Menu (for settings like adjusting anything related to color or sound or entering the Setup Menu or exiting from the menu system itself). These buttons aren’t quite as easy to navigate as a mini-joystick controller most other monitors now use, especially gaming monitors. But this has become second nature with a bit of practice.

Check color and brightness.

I measured the TD2455’s brightness, contrast ratio, and color accuracy using Portrait Displays’ CalMAN 5 calibration software and the Murideo SIX-G signal generator. I measured brightness in Standard mode at 220 nits (candelas per meter squared), slightly below its rated 250 nit brightness but sufficient for typical business purposes. I calculated its contrast ratio to be 687:1, well below the 1,000:1 rating.

ViewSonic covers 94.6% of the sRGB color space — the standard color space used on the web and many other applications — suitable for typical business use. It also covers 74% of Adobe RGB, a wider color gamut used in some photography applications, and 74.3% of DCI-P3, a common color space used for digital film projection.

In addition to our official testing, I did ad hoc testing by viewing various documents, web pages, videos, and photos on the TD2455. It did well; Colors are bright, vivid, and look realistic in photos and videos, and the contrast is good. The sound from its twin 2-watt speakers is of decent quality.

Near perfect touch

The ViewSonic TD2455 is at the top end of the price scale for a 24-inch 1080p monitor, which can cost as little as $100. (The stylish, home-office ViewSonic VX2485-mhu sells for $199.99.) But very few business monitors have the TD2455’s touchscreen functionality — the only one we’ve seen. The Asus ZenScreen Touch (MB16AMT ) was recently reviewed, as a completely portable monitor is a rather different animal. Less still has the features — maximum tilt range and the ability to link to other displays or add a projector or interactive whiteboard to the mix — to get the most out of the touchscreen for presentations.

While you might pay a lot for the TD2455 for its screen size, it’s money well spent if you need a stylus or the ability to control presentations from a full-size screen and a desktop computer rather than, say, a laptop monitor. This innovative display becomes our choice touch desktop monitor.
