The ViewSonic TD2455 is a smart and beautifully designed 24-inch touchscreen monitor for businesses and classrooms. It supports both gesture-based (finger) multitouch and uses with the included stylus. Its stand tilts back unusually far (within 30 degrees horizontally), allowing a standing presenter to control the monitor from its display easily. The TD2455 doesn’t come cheap, but the picture quality and presentation-friendly features make it a buy.

Innovative display and stand

The TD2455’s 23.8-inch display uses in-plane switching (IPS) technology and offers a resolution of 1080p (1,920 x 1,080 pixels) in the standard widescreen (16:9) aspect ratio. The flat screen is housed in a matte black cabinet. It has a 0.6-inch bezel on the bottom and ultra-thin bezels on the sides – making it a good choice for a multi-monitor setup – and the top.

The display is a 10-point capacitive touchscreen that supports gesture-based multitouch finger control. (It can detect 10 fingers simultaneously.) The TD2455 is also responsive with the included stylus, which comes with an extra nib. In both modes, I found the touchscreen to be responsive and a pleasure to use.

When counting the stand, the screen measures 28.7 x 53.8 x 42.6 cm (HWD) and weighs 6.4 kg. Its unusual depth is due to the innovative stand, like an articulated desk lamp, although instead of facing down, the display can be tilted from facing you to tilt back upwards. (The screen angle is between -5 degrees and 60 degrees from vertical.)

A powerful and useful set of ports

For connectivity, the TD2455 has one USB Type-A upstream and two downstream USB-C ports, one USB-C port that supports DisplayPort over USB, one HDMI and two DisplayPort connectors, one input and one output. DisplayPort-in connects to a computer, while the TD2455 can connect to a projector or interactive whiteboard with DisplayPort-out. Alternatively, suppose your graphics card supports DisplayPort’s Multi-Stream Transport (MST). In that case, you can daisy-chain up to four displays, as long as their resolutions aren’t greater than 1080p and all have DisplayPort-in and DisplayPort-out connectors.

Of the monitors we’ve reviewed, only a few support multi-monitor connectivity. Dell 27 USB-C Monitor (P2720DC) also uses two DisplayPort connectors to facilitate daisy-chaining an additional display. At the same time, Dell Express Daisy-Chaining automatically configures the settings Windows display for an extended dual monitor setup. The LG UltraFine 4K Focused Monitor for Mac (24MD4KL-B) does this with a pair of Thunderbolt 3 ports, one for connecting to a computer, the other for a second monitor.

The USB-C port supports DisplayPort over USB, allowing it to transfer video and data. It also supports USB Power Delivery up to 60 watts, allowing it to power or charge the laptop (or other devices) it’s connected.

Most of the ports are rear-facing, but they’re easier to access than many similarly configured models due to the display’s exceptional tilt-up range. That allows you to see ports that would otherwise be hidden behind the screen. Two downstream USB ports, where you can connect peripherals such as flash drives or external hard drives, are conveniently located on the left side of the screen.

Buttons and menus

The controls for the TD2455 include buttons on the bottom bezel near the right edge. Farthest to the right is the power button, and to the left are the five square buttons used to navigate the monitor’s on-screen display (OSD).

Top-level choices (aka Quick Menu) include View (preset color modes like Standard, Game, Movie, Text, Web). Contrast/Brightness (controlled using the slider), Input Selection (HDMI, DisplayPort, and USB-C), and Main Menu (from where you can adjust color or sound, enter the Setup Menu or exit the menu system). Navigating with buttons isn’t as easy as with the mini-joystick controller that many currently use, especially gaming monitors. Still, with a little practice, it has become second nature.

Check color and brightness.

I measured the TD2455’s brightness, contrast ratio, and color accuracy using Portrait Displays’ CalMAN 5 calibration software and the Murideo SIX-G signal generator. I measured brightness in Standard mode at 220 nits (candelas per meter squared), slightly below its rated 250 nit brightness but sufficient for typical business purposes. I calculated its contrast ratio to be 687:1, well below the 1,000:1 rating.

ViewSonic covers 94.6% of the sRGB color space — the standard color space used on the web and many other applications — suitable for typical business use. It also covers 74% of Adobe RGB, a wider color gamut used in some photography applications, and 74.3% of DCI-P3, a common color space used for digital film projection.

In addition to our official testing, I did ad hoc testing by viewing various documents, web pages, videos, and photos on the TD2455. It did well; Colors are bright, vivid, and look realistic in photos and videos, and the contrast is good. The sound from its twin 2-watt speakers is of decent quality.

Near perfect touch

The ViewSonic TD2455 is at the top end of the price scale for a 24-inch 1080p monitor, which can cost as little as $100. (The stylish, home-office ViewSonic VX2485-mhu sells for $199.99.) But very few business monitors have the TD2455’s touchscreen functionality — the only one we’ve seen. The Asus ZenScreen Touch (MB16AMT ) was recently reviewed, as a completely portable monitor is a rather different animal. Less still has the features — maximum tilt range and the ability to link to other displays or add a projector or interactive whiteboard to the mix — to get the most out of the touchscreen for presentations.

While you might pay a lot for the TD2455 for its screen size, it’s money well spent if you need a stylus or the ability to control presentations from a full-size screen and a desktop computer rather than, say, a laptop monitor. This innovative display becomes our choice touch desktop monitor.
